"One Night With The Hidden Alpha" Chapter 3

Killian made a quiet sound against her mouth that almost didn't sound human.
Rough enough that Claire felt it more than heard it.
His hand tightened instinctively at her waist before immediately loosening again, as though some reflex inside him had reacted faster than control could suppress it.
And Claire—God, Claire noticed that too clearly.
Killian kissed her with devastating concentration, like the rest of the world had narrowed into the space between their bodies.
Claire slid one hand upward into his hair before she could reconsider the decision.
Killian inhaled sharply against her mouth, entire body going tense beneath her fingertips. His composure cracked for one dangerous second after that, and suddenly she understood with alarming clarity how much effort he'd been using to stay controlled around her.
Her pulse stumbled hard.
Her fingers drifted lower from his throat to the front of his shirt, smoothing absentmindedly across dark fabric while his eyes followed every movement with unnerving focus.
The atmosphere between them thickened instantly.
Charged enough that Claire became acutely aware of her own breathing.
Killian lowered his head slowly after that, giving her enough time to move away if she wanted.
She didn't.
The second kiss felt deeper immediately.
His restraint remained—careful, frighteningly deliberate—but hunger had started bleeding through the cracks now.
Claire's back met cool marble near the kitchen island a moment later, and Killian stopped instantly the second he realized it.
Another man might have trapped her there deliberately.
Killian pulled back half an inch instead.
Giving her space.
The gesture shouldn't have affected her so strongly.
It did anyway.
"You're being very careful," she whispered.
Something dark flickered behind his eyes.
"You have no idea."
Before Claire could ask what that meant, Killian's gaze dropped briefly toward her throat, and for the first time all evening she saw his control slip visibly.
The look vanished almost immediately beneath restraint, but she caught it.
And instead of moving closer—
Killian stepped back.
Killian stood a few feet away now with one hand braced against the marble counter behind him, breathing slower than any normal person should've been capable of after kissing someone like that. Rainlight flickered across his face while the city glowed beneath the storm outside, turning the penthouse silver-blue around them.
"You should probably understand something about me before this goes further."
The seriousness in his tone should have triggered common sense immediately.
Instead Claire became even more curious. She pushed herself away from the marble counter slowly.
"If you're secretly married," she said, "this is the moment to mention it."
"I'm not married."
"Violently opposed to emotional intimacy?"
"No."
"Tax fraud?"
A brief exhale escaped him that almost sounded like laughter again.
Claire liked that sound more than she should have.
She stopped in front of him once more, close enough now that she could feel warmth radiating from his body despite the cool air conditioning humming softly through the penthouse.

"Then what exactly is the problem?"
Killian looked down at her for a long moment without answering.
And suddenly Claire had the strange feeling that he was deciding something important internally.
Not whether he wanted her.
That part felt terrifyingly obvious.
Whether he trusted himself around her.
The realization hit hard enough to still her completely.
"You make me forget myself," he said quietly.
"It's exactly what I want," she whispered.
Claire reached for him before she could overthink it.
Her fingers slipped through his loosened collar slowly, brushing warm skin beneath dark fabric.
Killian inhaled sharply.
Every muscle in his body tightened beneath her hands.
Rainlight flashed softly through the windows behind him while silence stretched warm and intimate between them.
Then Killian lifted her hand slowly from his chest and pressed his mouth against the inside of her wrist. Deliberate enough to feel intimate immediately.
Claire's breath caught. The look in his eyes afterward nearly unraveled her completely.
Something frighteningly close to affection already trying to exist.
And suddenly Claire understood exactly why this felt dangerous.
Because this no longer resembled two strangers making reckless choices after too much alcohol and emotional exhaustion.
Claire closed her eyes.
Killian's hand slid slowly along her spine, fingers spreading carefully across the small of her back before drawing her closer in gradual increments, like he was testing the limits of his own self-discipline.
Killian kissed her like he was trying to hold onto something already slipping through his fingers.
It followed them through the night in soft silver waves against the windows, turning the entire city beyond the glass into blurred light and shadow.
Claire only remembered fragments afterward.
The warmth of Killian's hands against her skin.
Every movement paused at the edge of intensity before softening again beneath control.
The way his breathing changed whenever her fingers traced absentmindedly across his throat or shoulders.
At some point she realized Killian barely stopped watching her at all.
Like he was trying to memorize the existence of her.
Lightning flashed once across the skyline beyond the windows, illuminating dark sheets tangled around warm skin before the room slipped back into shadow again.
Claire felt the steady weight of Killian's hand along her spine as he kissed her slowly enough to make her chest ache unexpectedly.
"You should probably stop."
"I can't."The honesty in it wrapped itself around her ribs before she could protect herself from it.
Killian kissed her shoulder quietly while rain whispered against the windows, and Claire closed her eyes for one brief second, letting herself exist inside warmth.
Just for tonight.
