Chapter 30 — The Night Noctis Burned

The military ceremony began beneath snowfall and marching drums.

Imperial banners covered every cathedral tower while officers from northern command filled the central courtyards below in rows of black and silver uniforms sharp enough to resemble funeral attire. Students lined the terraces under armed supervision while priests prepared ceremonial blessings for the deployment divisions leaving Noctis before winter’s end.

War had stopped pretending to wait outside the academy.

It lived here now.

Evelyn stood near the eastern balcony wrapped in dark formal academy colors while snow drifted slowly through the cathedral arches overhead. Below her, soldiers assembled across the main courtyard beside armored transports and supply convoys preparing for northern movement.

Everything looked painfully organized.

Which meant violence was close.

Cassian appeared beside her carrying two untouched ceremonial programs and visible emotional exhaustion.

“I hate military pageantry,” he muttered.

“You hate everything.”

“Yes, but this specifically feels like the opening chapter of a national tragedy.”

Fair.

Across the cathedral courtyard, Lucien stood beside General Rhys and the emperor beneath the imperial platform.

Black military formalwear.

Silver insignia.

Perfect composure.

But Evelyn knew him too well now.

She noticed the tension hidden beneath his stillness immediately.

The shadows near his boots had not settled properly since the ritual collapse inside the cathedral.

Neither had he.

The emperor spoke first.

His voice carried cleanly across the snow-covered courtyard through magical amplification wards.

“The empire survives because weakness remains temporary.”

Evelyn felt immediate disgust.

Below them, soldiers stood motionless beneath falling snow while students watched from the terraces in rigid silence.

Alaric continued calmly:

“History does not remember nations that hesitate.”

Lucien remained beside him without expression.

Yet Evelyn noticed one thing anyway.

His hands.

Even gloved, she recognized the tension there now.

Too still.

Too controlled.

Like he was enduring the ceremony rather than participating in it.

The emperor’s gaze shifted briefly toward Lucien.

“The crown exists to preserve order regardless of personal cost.”

The sentence landed deliberately.

Not political philosophy.

A warning.

Lucien’s jaw tightened almost invisibly.

Then the first explosion hit the western tower.

The entire courtyard shook violently.

Screaming erupted instantly across the terraces as black smoke exploded upward through stained-glass windows near the western military bridge. Soldiers reached for weapons immediately while cathedral bells began ringing emergency alarms overhead.

Another blast followed.

Then another.

The rebellion had arrived.

Chaos spread through Noctis within seconds.

Armed rebel operatives surged through the lower cathedral gates while hidden explosives detonated across the military transport lines below. Snow and smoke swallowed half the courtyard as soldiers scrambled through collapsing formations beneath panicked shouting.

Students fled in every direction.

Evelyn barely had time to react before Cassian grabbed her arm sharply.

“Move!”

A gunshot cracked through the courtyard.

Imperial soldiers flooded the terraces while rebel fighters emerged from hidden tunnel entrances beneath the cathedral walls.

Everything descended into violence simultaneously.

Lucien moved instantly.

Not toward the emperor.

Toward Evelyn.

The realization struck her hard enough to stop breathing for one dangerous second.

The shadows exploded violently across the courtyard beneath him as he crossed through the chaos. Imperial guards shouted in alarm while rebel operatives engaged soldiers directly across the cathedral steps.

Snow turned black beneath smoke and blood.

Another explosion shattered the eastern balcony beside Evelyn hard enough to throw students screaming across the stone floor.

Cassian dragged her downward just as debris tore through the air above them.

Then someone shouted from the lower stairs:

“Get the girl!”

Rebels.

Two armed operatives surged through the smoke directly toward Evelyn’s position.

Cassian cursed sharply.

Lucien saw them.

Everything after that happened too fast.

The shadows ripped across the courtyard in violent black waves while Lucien crossed half the cathedral terrace with terrifying speed. One rebel barely managed to raise a weapon before darkness slammed him hard enough through the balcony rail to disappear into the snow below.

The second operative lunged toward Evelyn.

An imperial soldier intercepted him first.

Then hesitated.

Recognition flashed across the soldier’s face.

Not at the rebel.

At Evelyn.

The burned warning letters returned instantly through her mind.

They know what you really are.

The soldier raised his weapon toward her.

Lucien reacted before thought.

The shadows struck first.

The imperial soldier never even fired.

Darkness wrapped violently around his throat and threw him across the cathedral wall hard enough to leave blood across the stone.

The entire terrace went silent.

Not because Lucien killed someone.

Because he killed one of his own soldiers protecting Evelyn.

General Rhys saw it.

The emperor definitely saw it.

And somewhere beneath the smoke and collapsing cathedral bells, everyone understood the same terrible truth simultaneously:

Lucien Mordane had chosen a side emotionally.

The shadows around him looked monstrous now.

Snow and black smoke twisted violently through the courtyard while rebel forces clashed against imperial soldiers below.

Lucien reached Evelyn seconds later.

One hand closed tightly around her wrist.

“Stay with me.”

The command sounded rougher than usual.

Not authority.

Fear.

Evelyn stared at the blood spreading slowly across the stone behind him.

“You killed him.”

Lucien looked back once toward the dead imperial soldier.

No hesitation crossed his face.

“He was going to hurt you.”

The simplicity of the answer terrified her more than the violence itself.

Nearby, cathedral towers burned openly now beneath spreading rebel attacks while military divisions attempted to seal the academy gates.

Then a voice echoed sharply across the smoke-filled courtyard:

“Lucien!”

Everyone turned.

A woman stood atop the shattered western stairway surrounded by armed rebel operatives beneath drifting snow and firelight.

Nyx Arden.

Rebel commander.

Dark military coat whipping violently in the storm winds while blood streaked one side of her face.

Her eyes locked directly onto Lucien.

“You know what they made you,” she shouted across the chaos. “Stop protecting the empire that butchered children beneath this mountain!”

Imperial soldiers raised weapons immediately.

Lucien’s shadows surged violently in response.

Not toward the rebels.

Toward the soldiers.

The courtyard froze.

General Rhys stepped forward sharply. “Your Highness—”

Lucien ignored him completely.

His attention remained fixed on Nyx through smoke and falling snow while Evelyn felt the tension tearing through him almost physically now.

Empire.

Rebellion.

Duty.

Love.

Everything inside him splitting open simultaneously beneath the war Noctis had always been building toward.

Then Lucien tightened his grip around Evelyn’s wrist and pulled her behind him instinctively as another wave of gunfire erupted across the burning courtyard.

And somewhere deep beneath the academy, the mountain itself began shaking.
