"She Polished My Shoes So I Wouldn’t Fire Her Mother" Chapter 8
The Packed Bags
For six days, I let myself believe I could keep the different parts of my life from touching.
I took Hannah to a restaurant with no connection to my family. She wore a navy dress and spent the first ten minutes pretending not to notice that I was watching her.
Then she stole a fry from my plate and told me to relax.
We talked until the waiter began stacking chairs in the far corner. When I drove her home, she kissed me before I could open her door.
Two nights later, she came to my rooms after Zoe was asleep and Mrs. Bell had agreed to stay nearby. We sat together until midnight, her legs across my lap, talking about things I had forgotten I could want.
Then Rachel Mercer called.
Victor had controlled the missing funds for years. The outside records showed transfers into businesses connected to him, disguised among household and property expenses. My father’s written approvals appeared on several early transactions.
“He knew,” I said.
“He approved those transfers. We still need to establish how much he understood about the later ones.”
That was Rachel: precise even when precision hurt.
“And the intrusion?”
“Julian has someone you should speak to.”
The man in the garden footage had been identified through a vehicle used that night. His connection to Victor’s office was being examined. An attempt to buy his silence had made him less inclined to remain silent.
I listened to Julian’s report without interrupting.
Then my phone lit up with a call from Hannah.
Her voice was controlled.
“Someone called me at work. He said my mother had made enough trouble, and I should think about my daughter before I spoke to anyone else.”
“Where are you?”
“In the apartment. Mrs. Bell has Zoe.”
“Stay there.”
“Dante, tell me what’s happening.”
“I’m coming.”
I hung up before she could ask anything else.
By the time I reached the house, I had arranged a secure apartment, a driver, and two men I trusted. I told Mrs. Bell to pack enough clothes for a week. I checked exits and windows. I spoke to Julian, to Rachel, to the driver.
I did not speak to Hannah.
When I finally entered her room, two bags stood beside the bed.
She was looking at them.
“Why is someone packing my underwear?”
“Because you’re leaving in twenty minutes.”
Her face changed.
“No.”
“Hannah, this is not the time.”
“Then make time.”
I shut the door.
“The threat was serious. Victor is cornered, and someone working for him has your number.”
“I told you about that threat. I didn’t ask you to remove me from my own life.”
“I’m trying to keep you safe.”
“Then tell me what you know.”
I reached for one of the bags.
She put her hand on the handle first.
“Stop.”
The single word cut through the room.

We stared at each other.
“You don’t get to decide everything because you’re frightened,” she said.
“I’m not frightened.”
She looked at my hand gripping the leather strap.
I let go.
Outside, Mrs. Bell said something softly. A little voice answered her.
“I can get the brush.”
I turned.
Zoe stood in the open doorway, her bear dangling from one hand. She was looking at the bags.
“I’ll do the shoes.”
Hannah was beside her immediately.
“No, baby. You don’t need to.”
“Then we stay?”
I could still hear the man’s threat in my head. Think about your daughter. I had answered it by having strangers pack her clothes while I decided where she would sleep.
I crouched, but Zoe pressed against Hannah’s leg.
I stayed where I was.
“You haven’t done anything wrong,” I said. “Neither has your mama.”
She looked at the bags again.
“We’re talking about where to stay for a little while. I should have explained before anyone packed.”
“Is Mama coming?”
“Yes. You’ll be together.”
Hannah stroked her hair.
“Mrs. Bell has your snack ready. Can you sit with her while I finish talking?”
Zoe hesitated, then nodded. She took the bear with her.
When the door closed, Hannah leaned against it.
“I can’t have her afraid every time she sees a suitcase.”
“I know.”
“You didn’t think about that.”
“No,” I said. “I didn’t.”
It cost more than it should have to say it.
I told her everything I could: the financial records, the intruder, the threat, the apartment, the people I wanted nearby. She listened without interrupting.
Then she asked where the apartment was.
I showed her.
“My sister lives twenty minutes from there.”
“She can visit.”
Hannah raised her eyes.
“If you want her to,” I corrected.
“She’ll stay tonight.”
“All right.”
“And nobody comes inside without asking me unless there’s an immediate emergency.”
“All right.”
“I need some space from you, Dante.”
That answer I was not prepared for.
She held my gaze, pale but steady.
“I want to know that I can say that and still be safe.”
I could have argued. I could have reminded her what I had done, how carefully I had arranged things, how many men would have accepted my decisions with gratitude.
Instead I stepped away from the bags.
“You can.”
We packed the rest together, slowly, while she decided what to take. She called her sister, Claire. I moved the departure time and told the driver to wait.
At the apartment, Hannah checked the rooms herself. Zoe chose where the bear would sleep. Claire arrived with groceries and a look that suggested she had already formed several opinions about me.
I gave Hannah the keys.
“Call Julian directly if you need anything. You have his number.”
She nodded.
Zoe ran over before I left.
“You’re going?”
“I have to work.”
She held up her arms.
I looked at Hannah. She nodded once.
I lifted Zoe, felt her cheek against mine, and kissed her curls before setting her down.
Outside the apartment, the door closed softly behind me.
I stood in the corridor longer than I needed to.
