"She Polished My Shoes So I Wouldn’t Fire Her Mother" Chapter 3
The Suitcase
Hannah looked at Julian, then at her sleeping daughter.
“I don’t want her hearing this.”
Julian moved to the corridor and closed the door behind him. I waited until the latch clicked.
“You can talk quietly,” I said. “She hasn’t moved in twenty minutes.”
Hannah drew the blanket over her knees.
“My mother worked here. Years ago. Her name was Evelyn Williams.”
The name brought back a woman kneeling beside me on the kitchen tiles, wrapping a cloth around a bleeding knee. Not a clear memory. A hand, lavender soap, the sting of being told to hold still.
“I remember her.”
“She died last winter.”
“I’m sorry.”
Hannah rubbed a seam in the blanket.
“I found letters when I cleared out her apartment. She’d been trying to get answers about a fund your mother started for the household staff. Money for emergencies. Rent, medical bills. That sort of thing.”
“My mother died twenty-two years ago.”
“I know. Mine said everything changed afterward.”
“What changed?”
“Mr. Hale stopped answering her. Eventually he told her the fund had never been completed. Then she lost her job.”
A pipe clicked inside the wall. I looked at the sleeping child in my arms, at the black stain dried on her sleeve.
“How long have you worked here?”
“Four months.”
“And you never asked me?”
“I asked Mr. Hale. He handled the paperwork when I was hired.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Her gaze lifted.
“Would you have listened?”
I opened my mouth, then shut it.
I remembered passing her in the hall. She had started to speak once. I had held up a finger because I was on a call, then gone into my study.
I hadn’t come back.
“What did Victor say?”
“That my mother had imagined things. That you knew about her accusations and wouldn’t tolerate them from me.”
“Did he threaten your job?”
“He said I should remember who gave us a roof.”
Zoe stirred. I shifted her weight, and her hand closed on my shirt.
“I didn’t come here to cause trouble,” Hannah said. “The job paid better than the hotel. There was a room for Zoe. When I recognized his name on the forms, I thought I might finally ask someone.”
“You had a reason to ask.”
“I also had a reason to stop.” Her eyes went to her daughter.
For years I had allowed Victor to deal with household matters because I considered them beneath my attention. Now a woman was explaining the price of that convenience while her child slept with shoe polish under her nails.
“Keep the letters,” I said. “Don’t give Victor anything.”
“They’re at my sister’s apartment. I only kept a copy here.”
“Good.”
Hannah looked at me for a long moment.
“Am I supposed to be relieved?”
“Not yet. But you don’t have to be afraid of losing your room tonight.”
Outside, Julian spoke into his radio. I could hear his steady voice, the ordinary business of keeping a house safe. Inside, Hannah finally leaned back.

When she fell asleep, I put Zoe beside her. It took several careful attempts to free my fingers.
At dawn I left Julian in charge and took a call from Victor in my study.
“I understand Williams has been speaking to you,” he said.
“Which Williams?”
A pause.
“The housekeeper. Dante, she’s been under strain. Her mother had certain ideas about your father.”
“What were you doing in his office yesterday?”
“Looking for an old property schedule. I meant I’d been home during the incident.”
“That distinction wasn’t in your message.”
“I was tired. We all make imprecise statements when we’re tired.”
“Stay away from the house until I call you.”
“Of course.”
I ended the call and instructed Julian to preserve the access records. Then I asked an attorney outside Victor’s circle to meet me later that morning.
When I returned upstairs, Hannah was awake and drinking water. Zoe sat beside her, feeding imaginary cereal to the bear.
She stopped when she saw me.
“Is the shoe done?”
“Yes.”
I had asked the housekeeper to put it in my room, exactly as it was.
“Did I help?”
“You helped me find your mama.”
She considered that, then pushed the bear toward me.
“He wants some.”
I accepted an invisible spoonful with the seriousness the occasion apparently required.
Hannah watched us over her cup. Her fever had eased, but the exhaustion remained.
“How long can we stay?” she asked.
“You live here.”
“I live here because I work here. I need to understand what happens if I can’t.”
I pulled up a chair.
“Paid time off while you recover. After that, we’ll discuss your job when you’re ready.”
“And the room?”
“Nobody will put you outside.”
“That isn’t quite an answer.”
It irritated me, being asked to define something I thought I had made clear. Then Zoe looked between us and whispered to her bear.
“Mama’s not going.”
I let the irritation pass.
“Thirty days’ accommodation regardless of whether you return to work,” I said. “More if you need it. I’ll have the arrangement written down so you don’t have to depend on who is standing in the corridor.”
Hannah exhaled. “Thank you.”
My phone buzzed. Julian was downstairs with the outside attorney. I told Hannah where I was going and promised to return after the meeting.
It lasted forty minutes.
When I came out, a maid was standing at the foot of the east stairs with her hands twisted in her apron.
“Sir, Mr. Hale said the arrangement had been approved.”
“What arrangement?”
Upstairs, Hannah stood beside a small suitcase. She had changed into jeans, but her hair was still damp at the temples. Zoe waited beside her in clean pajamas, clutching the bear.
Victor held a printed notice.
“This is unpleasant,” he said, “but it’s better handled quickly.”
Zoe saw me.
“Did you change your mind?”
