"My Straight Husband Forgot Our 3-Year Marriage" Chapter 17 — I Fell in Love with You Twice
The first thing Adrian remembered was the sound of Elliot laughing in the kitchen on a Sunday morning.
The second was the smell of burnt pancakes.
The third was a wedding vow spoken through tears he had pretended weren't there.
He was standing in Elliot's new studio, holding a box of framed prints, when the memories arrived so suddenly that he had to sit down.
Elliot hurried across the room. "Adrian?"
"I'm okay," Adrian said, though his voice shook. "I just remembered something."
"What?"
"Our wedding. Your mother crying. Noah losing the rings for ten minutes."
Elliot covered his mouth. "He left them in the car."
"I threatened to fire him from being my best friend."
"You did."
Adrian laughed, then fell silent. More memories were unfolding behind the first: their honeymoon by the rainy Oregon coast, the awful matching boots, Elliot asleep against his shoulder on the flight home.
And then the anniversary. The missed calls. His own voice on the phone, sharp with exhaustion and impatience.
"I remember the argument," he whispered.
Elliot's face changed. "You don't have to talk about it now."
"I do. Not because remembering makes it worse. Because it means I can't hide behind not knowing."
He remembered saying he couldn't leave a meeting, as if Elliot's disappointment were an inconvenience. He remembered the silence after Elliot stopped arguing.
"I made you feel like loving me was a burden," Adrian said.
"You made me feel like asking for time was unreasonable."
"It wasn't."
Elliot sat beside him on the floor. They remained there among unopened boxes until Adrian's breathing steadied.
He called Dr. Morgan, who advised him to rest and arrange a follow-up. The return of memories was encouraging, but he shouldn't force the missing pieces.
Adrian agreed. For once, he didn't treat medical advice as a challenge to be defeated.
At home, he found his old work calendar. He scrolled through a month packed with meetings, late dinners, and flights scheduled so tightly that the entries overlapped.
Elliot watched from the doorway. "You don't have to punish yourself by reading every appointment."
"I'm not punishing myself. I'm seeing what I used to call a life."
"Some of it mattered. You built something extraordinary."
"And I forgot to build room for you inside it."
Elliot came closer. "I don't want you to stop being ambitious."
"Good. Because I'm still annoyingly ambitious."
"I've noticed."
"But I want our marriage to be something I participate in, not something I assume will wait for me."
The next week Adrian attended a board meeting and left on time. His colleagues looked startled when he closed his laptop before the discussion had wandered into a fourth unnecessary hour.
"Send me the revised proposal tomorrow," he told them. "I'm going home."
Noah, who had joined remotely, texted him afterward: WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH ADRIAN?
Adrian replied: IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM. LIMITED AVAILABILITY.

He arrived at Elliot's studio carrying dinner and found him struggling to mount a frame. Adrian offered to help, and Elliot handed him the level.
"It's crooked," Elliot said.
"The frame or our marriage?"
"Both were. Only one is your responsibility right now."
Adrian adjusted the frame until Elliot approved. Then they sat on the floor eating noodles from cartons, surrounded by the beginnings of Elliot's independent future.
"I remembered the first time you showed me your portfolio," Adrian said. "You were terrified I'd laugh."
"You offered to fund an entire gallery."
"I was an idiot."
"You were trying to be generous."
"I should have asked what you wanted."
Elliot smiled. "You're asking now."
Later they returned to the coast for a quiet weekend. Adrian insisted on wearing the ridiculous rain boots he'd found in storage. Elliot laughed so hard he had to lean against the car.
"They're bright yellow," Elliot said.
"A fashion statement."
"A warning sign."
They walked along the wet beach, their hands linked. Adrian remembered another walk there, years earlier, when he'd told Elliot that marriage would be easy because he loved him so much.
"I was wrong about that," Adrian said.
"About loving me?"
"About love making everything easy. It makes the work worth doing."
Elliot stopped walking. "I like that better."
They kissed with the wind pushing against their coats. Adrian felt no need to compare this moment with the past. Both belonged to them.
Noah visited after hearing about the returned memories. He brought takeout and a ridiculous cake that read CONGRATULATIONS ON REMEMBERING YOUR OWN HUSBAND.
Adrian threatened to throw it out. Elliot took a photograph before cutting it.
"You still remember how to be unbearable," Noah observed.
"And you still remember how to leave," Adrian replied.
But when Noah embraced him, Adrian held on for a moment longer than usual. His friend had carried the truth through the frightening early days without making Elliot face everything alone.
"Thank you," Adrian said quietly.
Noah pretended not to hear. "You're welcome, Romeo."
That evening, back at the hotel, they talked until the rain became a steady whisper against the windows. They spoke about careers, children they weren't ready to discuss seriously, travel, and the little rituals that made a home.
"I don't know if every memory will return," Adrian admitted.
"Neither do I."
"But I know what I want."
Elliot looked at him. "What?"
"A future we both choose."
When they returned from the coast, Adrian asked Elliot to sit with him in the living room. He'd made a list of commitments, but he didn't want it to sound like a contract.
"I can work from home two afternoons a week," he said. "I can delegate more. And if I can't make dinner, I'll tell you before you're waiting alone."
Elliot listened, then added his own commitments. He would tell Adrian when he was upset rather than claiming everything was fine. He would protect time for his art without apologizing for it.
They agreed that neither could predict every future difficulty. Their plan wasn't to eliminate conflict but to face it together.
"We should have done this before the first wedding," Elliot said.
"We were busy choosing flowers."
"You wanted two thousand roses."
"A modest expression of affection."
"It looked like a botanical invasion."
Adrian laughed. He was beginning to remember the embarrassment of being that young and certain. He didn't hate the younger man anymore. He simply wanted to do better than he had.
The conversation ended with a hug rather than a dramatic promise. Adrian considered that a victory. It meant they could talk about difficult things and still feel safe together afterward.
The next morning Adrian slipped away to speak with a jeweler in town. He had ordered a ring weeks earlier, then hesitated, afraid a proposal would look like a shortcut around their difficult conversations.
Now he understood that a ring wasn't a solution. It was an invitation.
He returned to the hotel and found Elliot packing. Adrian's hands shook as he opened the small velvet box.
Elliot stared at the ring, then at Adrian. The man who had once forgotten his marriage was looking at him with a familiar, helpless devotion.
"Elliot Parker," Adrian said, "I fell in love with you twice. Can I marry you twice, too?"
