"My Straight Husband Forgot Our 3-Year Marriage" Chapter 8 — I Want My Husband Back in My Bed
Elliot looked at Adrian as though he'd just announced an intention to race his own reflection.
"Caught up with what?" he asked.
"My apparently legendary reputation as a husband."
"That's a dangerous ambition."
"I'm a dangerous man."
"Yesterday you asked the toaster to apologize."
"It attacked breakfast."
Elliot laughed. Adrian could have listened all afternoon. He leaned forward, then stopped when Elliot's smile turned thoughtful.
"Can I kiss you?" Adrian asked.
"You really are trying to beat your old record."
"I don't know the record."
"Neither do I. I wasn't keeping score."
"A terrible oversight."
Elliot reached for his collar and drew him closer. Their kiss was unhurried. Adrian felt the familiar shock of recognizing something his mind could not explain.
He had kissed Elliot before the accident, countless times according to the evidence. But he refused to treat this kiss as a replay.
It belonged to the present.
Elliot shifted onto his lap, settling carefully after checking Adrian's expression. Adrian held him around the waist, grateful for the warmth and for Elliot's easy confidence.
"Are you comfortable?" Elliot asked.
"Emotionally? Not remotely."
"Physically?"
"Perfectly."
Elliot brushed his thumb along Adrian's cheek. "You know we don't have to hurry."
Adrian nodded. His doctor had cleared him for normal activity, provided he avoided anything that caused pain or dizziness. The medical permission did nothing to settle the question of what he wanted.
That part belonged to him.
"I know," he said. "And I know being married doesn't mean you owe me anything."
Elliot's eyes softened. "Good."
Adrian smiled faintly. "But I would like another kiss."
"That can be arranged."
They kissed again. When they parted, Elliot rested his forehead against Adrian's, breathing quietly.
Adrian had imagined this moment several times since returning home. In those imaginings he was confident, witty, and entirely in control.
Reality made him feel twenty years younger and approximately eighty percent less articulate.
"You're thinking," Elliot whispered.
"I have a successful technology company. It's a professional requirement."
"Then tell me what you're thinking."
Adrian hesitated. He could joke about his former self. He could pretend he was only curious. But Elliot deserved something less convenient than a joke.
"I'm afraid you'll wake up one morning and realize the man you married isn't coming back," he admitted.
Elliot's fingers stilled against his shoulder. "And I'm afraid he'll come back and forget how to make room for me again."
The words landed between them. Adrian remembered Elliot's evasive answer about whether he'd been a good husband.
"Did I make you unhappy?" he asked.
"Not all the time. We were happy. We were also complicated."
"That sounds like a diplomatic answer."
"It's the honest one."
Adrian nodded slowly. He wanted to fix the problem immediately, but the shape of it remained unclear. He settled for holding Elliot's hand.
"We can talk about complicated," he said. "Whenever you're ready."
Elliot studied him. "You mean that?"

"Yes. Though I reserve the right to make terrible jokes during difficult conversations."
"That's already in the marriage contract."
Their laughter loosened the room. Elliot kissed his cheek, then started to rise. Adrian caught his hand, not to stop him, only to ask another question.
"Are you doing this because you remember loving me, or because you want to love me now?" Elliot asked before Adrian could speak.
Adrian met his eyes. The distinction mattered. He had been tempted to claim that memory lived in his body, that everything would return if they tried hard enough.
But he couldn't promise what his mind would recover.
"Because I want you," Adrian said. "The man sitting right here. Not a memory."
Elliot's eyes shone. "I needed to hear that."
"I needed to say it."
They sat quietly for a while, discussing what felt comfortable, what still felt unfamiliar, and how to tell each other if either wanted to stop.
Adrian was surprised by how intimate the conversation felt. It was less dramatic than a declaration of love and more courageous than pretending nothing had changed.
Later, Elliot put on a record in the living room. Adrian offered his hand.
"Dance with me?"
"You don't dance."
"Apparently I make duck noises in museums. I contain multitudes."
Elliot accepted. They swayed between the couch and the coffee table, laughing when Adrian nearly collided with a lamp.
"You used to hold me like this in the kitchen," Elliot said.
"Was I a good dancer?"
"Absolutely not."
"Consistency is comforting."
When the record ended, Adrian didn't let go immediately. Elliot stayed in his arms, looking at him with a tenderness that made the whole house seem quieter.
"Would you like to come upstairs with me?" Adrian asked.
Elliot's smile faded into something serious. "Are you sure?"
"I am. But only if you are."
"I am."
They walked upstairs hand in hand. At the bedroom door, Adrian paused, suddenly nervous again.
"What?" Elliot asked.
"I just realized I have no idea whether I snore."
"You do."
"That could ruin everything."
"Three years, Adrian. I've survived worse."
Elliot kissed him, and they went inside together. The door closed softly behind them.
Morning sunlight found Elliot in the kitchen wearing Adrian's shirt. He was measuring coffee into the machine when Adrian appeared, sleepy and smiling.
"You're up early," Elliot said.
"I woke up and you weren't there. I filed a complaint."
"With whom?"
"The management of this marriage."
Elliot laughed. Adrian moved behind him and wrapped his arms around his waist, waiting until Elliot leaned back against him.
They had spent the night talking, laughing, and choosing their closeness together. Adrian didn't have a sudden flood of recovered memories. He had something steadier: the knowledge that Elliot had trusted him with a new beginning.
He kissed Elliot's cheek. Elliot turned his head, smiling.
"Still straight?"
Before they went upstairs, Adrian asked whether Elliot wanted to leave the music playing. Elliot said yes, and they spent another song moving slowly through the living room.
"Do you remember our first dance?" Elliot asked.
"No. Was it graceful?"
"You stepped on my foot."
"So this is an established tradition."
"You apologized and then promised to practice every anniversary."
"Did we?"
"Once. You bought dancing lessons, and then you got called into work."
Adrian lowered his gaze. Elliot immediately shook his head.
"I didn't tell you to make you feel guilty. I just want you to know our marriage was real. The wonderful parts and the disappointing ones."
"I want to know all of it," Adrian said. "Even the parts where I behaved like a fool."
Elliot squeezed his hand. "There were plenty."
"Then we're going to need a longer playlist."
They talked about the difference between being remembered and being understood. Elliot said he didn't expect Adrian to recognize every habit. Adrian said he wanted the chance to learn without being compared constantly to a stranger who happened to look like him.
"That's fair," Elliot answered. "I'll try not to use your old self as a measuring stick."
"And I'll try not to be jealous of him."
"An ambitious promise."
"I'm an ambitious man."
Elliot smiled and rested his head against Adrian's shoulder. Adrian counted the slow beats of the song and let himself feel content without needing to prove anything.
Adrian buried his face against Elliot's shoulder. "Can we please stop asking me that?"
