"The Last Man I Should Want" Chapter 11
Someone Else Knows
Ben found us holding hands in the car park in January.
We'd survived the crowded winter fixtures, a spectacularly wet Christmas match, and my mother's attempt to feed Rafa enough roast potatoes to affect his centre of gravity. By then, Molly knew. My parents knew. Inês had sent me a photograph of Rafa aged nine with a terrible fringe and the message: Use responsibly.
We still hadn't told anyone at the club.
It wasn't a grand secret. It was a collection of little omissions that had begun to feel heavier than intended.
That afternoon, Rafa had reached into my coat pocket to retrieve the glove he'd lent me. I'd caught his hand and refused to release it until he admitted he had stolen my better scarf.
“Borrowed,” he said.
“For seven weeks.”
“It's a good scarf.”
“I'm aware. I chose it.”
Ben came around the corner carrying a boot bag.
He saw our joined hands. Looked at my face, then Rafa's.
I waited for the joke.
“Do you want me to forget I saw that?” he asked.
The simplicity of it loosened something in my chest.
“No,” I said, after looking at Rafa.
Rafa nodded. “No.”
“All right. Congratulations. You're both exceptionally annoying, so it seems efficient.”
I laughed, relief making the sound too loud.
Ben shifted the bag on his shoulder.
“Anyone else here know?”
“Not officially,” I said.
“Might be worth talking to Lucy before the internet gets inventive.”
“It has already been inventive.”
“Yes. I'd like to stop being sent the violin video.”
Rafa looked appalled. “There's a violin video?”
I patted his arm. “You don't need to see it.”
That evening, we discussed it over dinner. Neither of us wanted a team announcement. We did want the people responsible for our working environment to hear it from us.
We asked for a meeting with Reed and Lucy the following afternoon.
I spent most of the walk to the office preparing an explanation longer than any team talk I'd ever listened to.
Reed heard us out, then folded his arms.
“Are you asking me to change anything?”
“No,” Rafa said.
“Room assignments,” Lucy suggested gently. “Privacy around media work. Knowing who to contact if something comes up.”
“Practical things,” I added. “We didn't want you finding out from a photograph.”
Reed nodded. “Fair enough. Your places depend on football. I expect you both to tell me if something's affecting training, same as anyone else.”
“Understood,” we said together.
Lucy asked what we were comfortable sharing. We explained that family and a few friends knew; we weren't ready to invite public discussion.
“Then for now we don't comment on private lives,” she said. “If that changes, tell me. If someone approaches you unexpectedly, you can leave. You don't owe anyone an answer because they have a camera.”
I liked her more than I could comfortably say.
Outside, Rafa took a long breath.
“You all right?” I asked.
“Yes. You?”
“Yes.”
We stood looking at each other until Ben opened the dressing-room door.
“Wonderful meeting? Come and defend a corner. Some of us have actual work.”
Life continued. That was the pleasant surprise.
Ben didn't wink when we entered a room. Reed still shouted at us for losing the ball. Lucy sent interview schedules with no meaningful punctuation.
On a free afternoon, Rafa and I returned to the little coastal town from our first date. We bought coffee and walked along the harbour. It was cold enough that almost everyone had their hands hidden, but his found mine between our coats.
I didn't check who was watching.
Two evenings later, Lucy sent a message asking us to call her together.
I was on my sofa with Rafa's feet in my lap. He sat up when he saw my face.
The photograph on my screen showed the harbour, the red-painted railings, and the unmistakable shape of our joined hands. My head was turned towards him. He was laughing.
The faces weren't perfectly sharp. They didn't need to be.
“A journalist's asked for comment,” Lucy said when I rang. “It's circulating. We can keep the response simple while you decide what you want.”
Beside me, Rafa put his hand on the cushion, palm up.
I took it.
For the first time, the question of who knew was no longer entirely ours to schedule.
