"The Alpha’s Nanny, His Lost Mate" Chapter 17
The Fiancé Who Sold Me
Julian arrived on a Wednesday morning carrying white roses.
I saw them on the security monitor before I saw his face. He had brought the same flowers to my parents’ funeral and stood beside me while people praised his devotion.
The nausea was immediate.
Ronan came to stand beside me.
“You do not have to see him.”
On the screen, Celeste adjusted her coat and spoke to the gate officer with a smile I knew too well.
For years their arrival had meant leaving. Pack a bag, lose a room, tell Mrs. Pike not to answer questions.
Upstairs, Maisie was making paper leaves with Ruth.
I looked at Ronan.
“I want him to hear me say no.”
We met them in the administrative reception room, away from the family wing. Gareth stood near the door. The roses remained outside.
Julian’s expression changed when he saw Ronan beside me. He recovered almost instantly.
“Nora. Thank God.”
He took one step forward.
I stayed where I was.
“That’s close enough.”
His gaze dropped to my hand in Ronan’s.
Celeste spoke first. “We thought you were dead. You have no idea what these years have been like.”
I studied her familiar face. She had once climbed into my bed after a nightmare and asked whether she could stay until morning. I had trusted the softness of that memory long after she stopped deserving it.
“You saw me at Eastmere,” I said.
“We were trying to help.”
“You were asking staff where I had been admitted while Julian’s driver watched the exits.”
Julian sighed. “You were frightened and confused. We handled it badly.”
The calmness of his voice brought back the loading yard so vividly that I felt rain on my face.
Ronan’s thumb moved once against my knuckles.
“You gave me suppressants,” I said. “You arranged to hand me to Varrick’s representative. I heard you.”
Celeste’s expression flickered.
Julian looked at Ronan. “This is a family matter, Alpha.”
“Then address her answer,” Ronan said. “She has given you several.”
For the first time Julian had no one willing to translate my refusal into distress.
He turned back to me.
“Our engagement was never formally dissolved.”
I almost laughed.
“Consider it dissolved.”
“There are assets under joint administration. Agreements your father made.”
“You can submit the documents to counsel. You will not use them to gain access to me.”
His face hardened. There he was: the man beneath every careful expression.
“You think you can walk away from your obligations because another man has taken an interest?”
I felt Ronan’s wolf rise. I squeezed his hand before he spoke.
“I walked away because you tried to sell me,” I said. “I am staying away because I finally understand you.”
Silence settled over the room.
Celeste shifted her attention to the photographs on the sideboard. Most showed pack ceremonies. One showed Maisie on Ronan’s shoulders during the summer fair.

“Your daughter,” she said softly.
I saw the calculation begin.
Ronan moved the photograph facedown with a controlled, deliberate hand.
“You have no business concerning her.”
Julian looked from the frame to me.
The realization reached him, and something ugly passed across his face.
“The child from the hospital.”
I stood straighter.
“My daughter. Ours.”
He looked at Ronan then, truly looked, perhaps finally understanding whose room I had entered years ago.
Ronan opened the reception-room door.
“Your visit is over.”
“Nora has a claim to settle,” Julian said.
“Through counsel,” I answered. “Not through my front door.”
Gareth escorted them out. Celeste glanced back once, but there was no apology in her face now, only anger at a plan that had failed to produce the expected result.
When the car left, my legs began shaking.
Ronan sat beside me on the reception sofa.
“I thought I would be braver,” I said.
“You were shaking and you told him to leave. What would bravery have looked like?”
I leaned into him, exhausted by how much effort a few sentences had required.
“I don’t want her frightened of them.”
“Neither do I.”
“We have to tell her something.”
That afternoon we explained that two people who had hurt me were not allowed to visit. Maisie listened with a serious face, then asked whether they could come through the garden.
Ronan told her the guards knew their names and would not let them in.
“You can always tell us if anyone asks you to keep a secret from us,” I added.
“Even about biscuits?”
“Especially suspicious biscuits,” Ronan said.
She smiled, reassured enough to return to her paper leaves.
Later Gareth brought us the preliminary security report. Harrow’s household had maintained trade links with Mercer’s territory. News of my return had likely passed along that route.
“And Celeste asked a gate officer whether the child ever visited the village school,” he said. “Before we brought her inside.”
My hand closed around the pendant.
Julian needed Ellis blood. He had just discovered there were two living sources of it.
For the first time, hiding my own strength felt more dangerous than learning to use it.
That evening I went upstairs to get a cardigan and found myself pulling my suitcase from beneath the bed.
I had opened it before I understood what I was doing.
Three dresses. The notebook. Enough cash to get to the next town. My hands knew the order. My body had already begun preparing to survive the only way it remembered.
I sat on the floor beside the empty case.
Ronan found me there a few minutes later.
He looked at the suitcase, then at me. He did not ask whether I was leaving him.
“Do you need help putting it away?”
I nodded, embarrassed by the tears that came with it.
He knelt beside me and closed the case. Together we slid it back beneath the bed.
“I wasn’t thinking,” I said.
“You were doing something that kept you alive.”
“Maisie is downstairs. I know where I am. I still reached for it.”
He sat on the floor rather than pulling me to my feet.
“You don’t have to prove that you feel safe by never being frightened.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder.
“I want to get better at staying.”
“We have time to practice.”
When I stood, I took the cardigan from the drawer and left the rest of my clothes where they were.
