"The Alpha’s Nanny, His Lost Mate" Chapter 10
I Looked for You
He said my name once, as though testing whether it would disappear.
“Nora.”
Maisie stirred. Both of us looked toward her, and that small shared movement kept the room from tilting beneath my feet.
Ronan drew the blanket over her legs.
“Come into the sitting room,” he said. “We can leave the door open.”
I followed him through the adjoining doorway. The lamp beside the sofa cast the same warm circle of light I remembered from the hotel. I sat before my legs gave way.
He stayed standing a moment, one hand braced against the mantel.
“I looked for you.”
“I didn’t know who you were.”
“You could have asked.”
There was pain in the words, and an edge beneath it.
“I know that now.” I twisted my fingers together. “That morning, all I knew was that Julian had been frightened of you. I had just learned what the people I trusted were willing to do. I couldn’t imagine someone helping without wanting something.”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“I should have told you my name before you slept.”
“I should have left mine.”
Neither admission repaired the years. They made it possible to keep talking.
He sat opposite me.
“After you left, the hotel said the booking under Ellis had been canceled and the room reassigned. Your fiancé’s people supplied a story about a runaway bride. I had fragments of footage, a face no one would identify, and a note I read until the paper softened.”
I remembered Julian administering the estate, answering the telephone, speaking for me at every gathering after the funerals.
“He controlled the accounts,” I said. “The bookings would have gone through his office.”
“By the time we connected them to your family, you were gone. We followed Mercer, questioned his staff, searched beyond his territory. Someone kept feeding the search false sightings.”
“Celeste knew which names I might use.”
He leaned forward. “When I met you here, I thought I knew your face. Your application was the first thing I asked my security team to examine. The references were real. Nell Reed had lived and worked in every place you listed.”
“She was me.”
“Yes.” He looked toward the bedroom. “And Maisie chose you before I could decide whether my memory was playing tricks.”
I rubbed my wrist. “I’ve been taking scentroot for years.”
“I suspected a masking herb. It explains part of what I could not feel.”
He stopped, studying my face.
“You said you had a daughter.”
The words changed the air.
“Yes.”
“From that night?”
I nodded.
His hand closed slowly over his knee.
“Tell me what happened.”
I told him about Bellweather, Mrs. Pike, the yellow sleeper. I told him about the pharmacy window and Celeste’s reflection. When I reached the hospital, my voice began to fail.
He moved to the sofa beside me, leaving space.

“Take your time.”
“A man found me in the street. There were others with him. He had gray in his hair, here.” I touched my temple. “He said his sister had broken his hand when she gave birth.”
Ronan did not move.
“What was his name?”
“Gareth.”
He stood so abruptly that I flinched.
“I’m sorry.” He crouched in front of me. “I’m not angry with you. I need to make a call.”
I watched him take out his phone.
“Gareth. Come to the family wing. Now.”
He listened, then added, “Bring the original Eastmere hospital file. The sealed copy.”
Eastmere.
The name was a physical blow.
“You know the hospital.”
“Yes.”
“Ronan.” I had never said his name like that before. “Why do you have a file?”
He sat beside me again.
“I don’t want to give you an answer until we have checked what can be checked.”
But his voice was no longer quite steady.
I looked through the open door at Maisie’s bed. At the blue blanket tucked beneath her chin. At the small hand resting outside it.
“No,” I whispered, not refusing, only frightened of the size of the hope.
Ronan took my hand when I reached for him.
Gareth arrived in less than twenty minutes wearing a coat over clothes he had clearly put on in a hurry. He entered quietly, then stopped at the sight of me.
I saw recognition struggle through four years of different hair, better health, and a face no longer twisted with pain.
“The loading yard,” he said.
I stood.
“You put your coat around me.”
He looked at Ronan, then back at me.
“You kept asking whether the baby would live.”
My knees bent. Ronan caught my elbow before I fell.
Gareth opened the file with hands that were suddenly clumsy.
“You gave us Nell,” he said. “No surname in the car. Your admission papers later said Reed. You had no phone. We were still confirming your identity when the hospital lost you.”
“I came back.” The words tore out of me. “I came back for her.”
“I believe you,” Ronan said.
I turned toward him because I needed to see his face when he said it again.
He held my gaze.
“I believe you, Nora.”
