"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 18 — The Only Man Who Can Make the Ice King Melt
Six months later, Jamie Parker was late for breakfast.
Not because he had overslept. Not because he had lost his keys. He was late because Alexander Sterling had decided that folding towels was a competitive sport.
“Those corners are uneven,” Alexander said.
Jamie stared at the linen closet. “We're going to be buried under towels, and the police will call it an accident.”
“I'm only suggesting a better system.”
“You have a spreadsheet, don't you?”
Alexander said nothing.
“Oh my God. You do.”
They lived together now in an apartment with tall windows, two desks, and an aggressively unnecessary number of coffee mugs. Jamie had insisted on keeping his crooked bookshelf. Alexander had learned not to straighten it.
Their life was not perfect. They argued about dishes, work hours, and whether a thermostat could be trusted. But they also apologized, listened, and made room for one another.
Jamie’s new job was thriving. His first campaign had won a regional award, and his team had begun calling him the boss with the ridiculous socks.
Alexander claimed to be offended on Jamie’s behalf.
“You own socks with tiny avocados on them,” he said.
“That's leadership through personality.”
“That's a produce department.”
Jamie threw a dish towel at him.
At Sterling Group, the investigation into Richard Vale had concluded. The company had cooperated with the authorities and strengthened its security procedures. Richard faced legal proceedings based on the documented misconduct.
Alexander had also completed the board’s governance review. He no longer treated criticism as a personal attack, though Margaret maintained that his eyebrows still intimidated junior analysts.
“It's the eyebrows,” she told Jamie during lunch one afternoon. “They conduct performance reviews before he speaks.”
Jamie nodded solemnly. “I've been saying that for months.”
“Unfortunately, he's also become considerate. It's ruining our office folklore.”
“Don't worry. He still alphabetizes the spice rack.”
Margaret shuddered. “Monster.”
On a Friday evening, Alexander asked Jamie to dress for dinner.
“Define dress,” Jamie said from the bedroom. “Are we meeting royalty, or are you just having an expensive mood?”
“Something comfortable.”
“Suspicious.”
“Jamie.”
“Fine. But if you've booked a restaurant where the waiter describes foam for twelve minutes, I'm leaving.”
Alexander smiled to himself. There was no restaurant reservation. He had spent the afternoon preparing dinner at home, with Margaret's help locating a bakery that could deliver Jamie’s favorite lemon cake.
He had also spent three weeks rehearsing a question.
When Jamie emerged, the dining room was lit with candles. The table held homemade pasta, two glasses of sparkling water, and a small glass case containing the black-and-gold pen.
Jamie stopped in the doorway.
“Okay,” he said. “Either this is romantic, or you've finally decided to put the cursed stationery on trial.”
“Can it be both?”
“Only if I get to cross-examine the defendant.”
They ate slowly, talking about Jamie’s upcoming campaign launch and Alexander’s disastrous attempt to assemble a bookshelf without instructions.

“You said instructions were for people who lacked vision,” Jamie reminded him.
“I said I could infer the assembly sequence.”
“And then the shelf fell over.”
“It was structurally ambitious.”
Jamie laughed, and Alexander felt the familiar, ordinary happiness that had replaced the constant tension of his old life.
After dessert, Alexander stood and brought the glass case to the table.
“I used to think control was the same thing as safety,” he said.
Jamie’s smile softened.
“I thought that if I could anticipate every mistake, I could prevent every disappointment. Then you arrived, three minutes late, carrying a pen that made absolutely no sense.”
“Four minutes,” Jamie corrected. “And the subway was delayed.”
“Three minutes and forty-two seconds.”
“You kept the record?”
“Of course.”
Jamie shook his head, smiling through sudden tears.
“You challenged me,” Alexander continued. “You made me angry. You made me laugh when I didn't think I remembered how.”
“And I improved your terrible taste in breakfast cereal.”
“That too.”
Alexander took Jamie’s hands.
“I don't want a life where you agree with everything I say. I want the life where you tell me when I'm wrong, and I listen. Where we choose each other even on difficult days.”
Jamie looked at him, very still.
Alexander released one hand, reached into his pocket, and knelt.
Inside a small velvet box lay a simple platinum ring.
“Jamie Parker, will you marry me?”
For once, Jamie had no immediate comeback.
Then he laughed, half astonishment and half joy.
“You drove me insane from the moment we met,” Alexander added.
Jamie wiped at his eyes. “You were already insane. I just made it fun.”
Alexander laughed. “Is that a yes?”
“Yes, you impossible man. Of course it's yes.”
Alexander slid the ring onto his finger. Jamie pulled him up and kissed him, smiling so much that neither managed to make the moment elegant.
“Just so we're clear,” Jamie said, “I'm not calling you sir at the wedding.”
“I would be concerned if you did.”
“And no corporate seating chart.”
“Agreed.”
“No shareholder-style speeches.”
Alexander hesitated.
“Alexander.”
“Agreed.”
Jamie narrowed his eyes. “You had a presentation prepared.”
“Only twelve slides.”
“I'm marrying a menace.”
“Apparently.”
They called Oliver first. He screamed so loudly Jamie had to hold the phone away from his ear.
“I KNEW IT!” Oliver shouted. “I knew the emotionally constipated gargoyle had feelings!”
Alexander leaned toward the speaker. “I can hear you.”
“Excellent! Congratulations, Your Corporate Majesty!”
Margaret reacted more calmly, although she admitted she had suspected the proposal for weeks because Alexander had asked an unusual number of questions about ring sizes.
“Tell him I said he did well,” she told Jamie.
“He's standing right here.”
“I know. I prefer communicating through someone with emotional range.”
The following morning, Jamie woke to find Alexander at the kitchen island writing in a notebook.
Jamie approached quietly, slipped his arms around Alexander’s waist, and peered over his shoulder.

“Wedding vows?” he asked.
Alexander closed the notebook too quickly.
“Confidential.”
“Oh, come on. I'm literally the intended recipient.”
“You'll hear them at the wedding.”
Jamie spotted a sleek blue fountain pen beside the notebook.
He pointed at it. “Seriously? Another pen?”
Alexander picked it up with a smile.
“This one is for writing our wedding vows.”
“Does it have a warranty?”
“Yes.”
“Any mysterious neurological features?”
“None that I'm aware of.”
“Can I test it?”
Alexander handed it over. Jamie uncapped it and wrote his name on a scrap of paper.
Nothing strange happened. Alexander simply watched him with unmistakable affection.
Jamie added a second line beneath his signature.
Jamie Parker-Sterling?
Alexander read it, his eyes widening.
“You don't have to change your name,” he said immediately.
“I know. I'm trying it on.”
“How does it feel?”
Jamie considered the words. “Pretty good. Though Parker-Sterling sounds like a law firm that specializes in expensive divorces.”
“Then perhaps Sterling-Parker.”
“Worse. Definitely a private equity company.”
Alexander laughed and pulled him closer.
They stood together in the morning sunlight, surrounded by unfinished coffee, mismatched mugs, and the small, ordinary disorder of a shared home.
The old pen remained in its glass case on the bookshelf. It no longer carried sensations or secrets. It was simply a reminder of a ridiculous beginning.
Jamie kissed Alexander’s cheek.
“You know,” he said, “I still think you're the worst boss I've ever had.”
Alexander raised an eyebrow. “You no longer work for me.”
“Exactly. Best career decision of my life.”
“And marrying me?”
Jamie pretended to think.
“Ask me after you've done the dishes.”
Alexander sighed, but he was smiling as he reached for the sink.
Jamie watched him for a moment, then joined him.
The man who once controlled every room he entered had finally learned the pleasure of sharing one.
And the man who once complained about his impossible boss had found someone worth choosing, every single day.
The end.
