"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 16 — My CEO Can't Order Me to Stay
Alexander Sterling stared at Jamie across the dinner table.
For a moment, his mind supplied a dozen solutions. A promotion. A new department. A compensation package generous enough to make another company reconsider its ambitions.
He rejected every one before speaking.
“Is it a good opportunity?” he asked.
Jamie blinked. “That's your first question?”
“Should it be something else?”
“I expected a lecture about loyalty, probably with charts.”
“I can prepare charts if you miss them.”
“Please don't.”
Jamie told him about the offer. The role would give him creative authority over a small team, a chance to build campaigns from the ground up, and a salary that made Oliver whistle when he heard it.
“I want to know whether I can do this without your name opening doors,” Jamie said.
Alexander nodded. “You can.”
“You don't even know the company.”
“I know you.”
Jamie looked down at his plate. “You're making it hard to be dramatic.”
“I apologize.”
“No, you don't.”
Alexander reached across the table, palm up. Jamie placed his hand in it.
“I don't want you to stay somewhere you no longer feel safe,” Alexander said. “Even if I selfishly wish I could see you every morning.”
Jamie’s expression softened. “You could see me every morning somewhere else.”
“Is that an invitation?”
“It's a hypothetical. Don't have your assistant schedule a moving truck.”
“I'll cancel the imaginary truck.”
They laughed, but Alexander felt the old fear beneath his ribs. He was accustomed to keeping people close through schedules, obligations, and contracts. Jamie was offering him something that could not be purchased or ordered.
The next morning, Jamie accepted the offer. He sent Sterling Group a resignation letter that was professional, concise, and entirely free of insults about the executive floor.
Oliver read it over his shoulder.
“I'm disappointed,” Oliver said.
“Why?”
“You didn't mention that the CEO once banned scented candles because one reminded him of an aggressive shareholder.”
“That's not why he banned them.”
“It's the story I prefer.”
Jamie signed the letter.
Sterling Group’s human resources department arranged a departure meeting and confirmed that the independent investigation had cleared him. He received written documentation of his employment record and compensation.
He also received a message from Margaret.
For what it's worth, you made him a better manager. Please don't tell him I said that.
Jamie replied: Your secret is safe. Unless I need leverage.
Margaret sent a single laughing emoji.
Alexander was less successful at pretending the change was easy. On Jamie’s last Friday, he walked past the empty project floor twice and found reasons to return a third time.
Margaret intercepted him.
“Do you need something?”
“No.”
“Then stop frightening the interns.”
“I'm walking.”
“You're haunting.”
Alexander glanced toward Jamie’s desk. “He's really leaving.”
“Yes. Because he has an excellent opportunity. You said you supported him.”
“I do.”
“Then act like a boyfriend, not a disappointed landlord.”

He almost smiled. “You and Jamie would make a terrifying management team.”
“We know.”
At five, Jamie packed the last of his things. His desk plant went into a paper bag. His ridiculous mug, which read SURVIVED ANOTHER MEETING, followed.
Ethan came by to wish him well. Their friendship had become easier after Ethan testified, though Jamie still enjoyed reminding him of his disastrous timing.
“Dinner sometime?” Ethan asked.
“Sure. As friends. And no mysterious envelopes.”
“Agreed.”
When Jamie stepped into the lobby, Alexander was waiting near the doors.
“Are you here to confiscate my access card?” Jamie asked.
“Human resources already did that.”
“Efficient. Terrifying. On brand.”
Alexander took the paper bag containing the plant.
“May I walk you out?”
“You may, Mr. Sterling.”
Outside, the evening air smelled of rain and street food. Jamie stopped on the sidewalk and looked back at the building where he had spent eight chaotic months.
“I thought leaving would feel like losing,” he said.
“Does it?”
“No. It feels like I get to decide what happens next.”
Alexander smiled. “You do.”
Jamie turned toward him. “And you don't get to order me to stay.”
“I know.”
“Then ask me to stay in your life.”
Alexander went very still. The words seemed to rearrange something fundamental inside him.
“Jamie Parker,” he said quietly, “will you stay in my life?”
Jamie considered him with exaggerated seriousness.
“Only if you learn how to say please.”
Alexander took a breath. “Please.”
“Wow. That was painful for you.”
“Extremely.”
Jamie kissed him beneath the awning. When they separated, Alexander was smiling openly, apparently unconcerned that half the departing staff could see him.
“I'm not asking you to give up your work,” Alexander said. “Or your friends. Or any part of yourself.”
“Good. Oliver would charge a substantial relocation fee.”
“I would pay it.”
“That's exactly the kind of thing we're working on.”
Alexander nodded, accepting the correction.
They spent the weekend in Jamie’s apartment, a place with uneven shelves and a kitchen too small for two people who both insisted on controlling the stove.
Alexander attempted pancakes. Jamie supervised with all the patience of a hostile restaurant critic.
“Your batter has trust issues,” Jamie observed.
“It's batter.”
“And yet it refuses to commit.”
Alexander flipped one pancake successfully. Jamie applauded as though witnessing a miracle.
Later, they sat on the couch watching a terrible romantic comedy. Alexander kept predicting the plot. Jamie kept throwing popcorn at him.
“Stop analyzing love like a merger,” Jamie said.
“Then stop selecting films with obvious third-act misunderstandings.”
“It's a genre requirement.”
“It's inefficient.”
Jamie rested his head on Alexander’s shoulder. “You're impossible.”
“And you're still here.”
“Apparently I have terrible judgment.”
Alexander kissed his hair. “I hope you never improve.”
Monday arrived with a new office, new colleagues, and a desk that did not face Alexander’s intimidating executive suite.
Jamie was nervous. He liked it. The nerves belonged to his own future.
At lunch he sent Alexander a photograph of his new nameplate.
Creative Director. Jamie Parker.
Alexander replied: Proud of you.
Jamie read the message three times before answering.
Try not to cry in a board meeting.
No promises.
That evening, Alexander invited Jamie to dinner at his apartment. On the table sat the black-and-gold pen in its familiar case.
“I've been trying to learn where it came from,” Alexander said. “I think I found the person who made it.”
Jamie sat slowly. “You're telling me the haunted office supply has a manufacturer?”
“Apparently.”
His new team welcomed him with a handwritten card and a desk drawer full of office supplies. Jamie eyed the pens suspiciously.
“Is there a problem?” asked his new colleague, Priya.
“Not at all. I just have a complicated history with stationery.”
Priya laughed. “You're going to fit in.”
During the first planning session, Jamie challenged an expensive campaign concept and offered a simpler alternative. Nobody accused him of being disrespectful. His manager asked him to develop it further.
Jamie left the room almost dizzy with relief. He loved Alexander, but he had needed to discover that his confidence could survive outside Alexander's orbit.
That night he told Alexander about the meeting. Alexander listened, asked questions, and celebrated the success without offering to intervene.
It was a small achievement for both of them, and neither mistook it for something small.
“Please tell me we can leave a review.”
