"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 13 — The Day the Pen Went Silent
The pen lay on Alexander Sterling’s desk like an accusation.
He had put it in the top drawer twice. Twice he had opened the drawer again, unable to tolerate the sight of an ordinary object turned into evidence of everything he had mishandled.
It had been three days since Jamie Parker walked away from him. Alexander had attended meetings, signed contracts, and dismissed an acquisition proposal without raising his voice. Nobody at Sterling Group would have guessed he was sleeping in two-hour stretches.
His assistant, Margaret Chen, placed a coffee beside his laptop.
“You look terrible,” she said.
“Good morning to you, too.”
“You can threaten a board member with silence, Alexander. You can’t frighten me into pretending you’re fine.”
He turned the pen case in his hands.
“Do you think I made the wrong decision?”
“About the independent investigation? No. About allowing Jamie to learn he was under suspicion in a room full of executives? Absolutely.”
Alexander closed his eyes. “He said that.”
“Then he was right.”
“I know.”
Margaret seemed briefly astonished. “Well. Progress.”
The investigator, Nadia Brooks, called at nine. She had verified the duplicate login and was now tracing a phishing page that had appeared during Jamie’s password reset.
“The second session used an administrative token,” she explained. “Someone with privileged access could have replicated his credentials.”
“Who had that access?”
“That is what we’re establishing. I need you to stay out of the evidence chain.”
Alexander disliked every word of that instruction. He followed it anyway.
Across town, Jamie sat at Oliver’s kitchen table wearing yesterday’s sweatshirt and an expression Oliver described as offensively tragic.
“I am not tragic,” Jamie said.
“You’ve been staring at that cereal for twenty minutes.”
“I’m investigating its structural integrity.”
“Your jokes are getting worse. This is serious.”
Jamie had spent the night reconstructing the suspicious login screen. The browser history showed a redirect from a shortened internal link. He had clicked it while answering Richard Vale’s urgent message.
He printed the message and circled its timestamp.
Oliver leaned over his shoulder. “That’s the same hour Richard asked you to upload the contract appendix.”
“Exactly. He manufactured the emergency and the opportunity.”
“Then send it to the investigator.”
Jamie hesitated. “I don't want Alexander to think I need rescuing.”
“Evidence is not a rescue helicopter, Jamie. It’s evidence.”
Jamie submitted the files through the independent reporting portal, carefully preserving the originals.
He expected relief. Instead, he found himself thinking about the last conversation outside the glass doors.
Alexander had apologized without trying to excuse himself. That should have helped. Jamie still remembered how small he had felt at the meeting, listening to people discuss his integrity as though he were absent.
His phone vibrated. A message from Alexander, sent the previous night, remained unanswered.
You were right. I should have warned you. I’m sorry.
Jamie typed three different replies and deleted all of them.

At Sterling Group, Richard Vale arrived uninvited at Alexander’s office.
“We need to settle this before investors notice,” Richard said. “Terminate Parker, issue a statement, and move on.”
“The investigator hasn't concluded anything.”
“Your judgment is compromised.”
“Then you should welcome an independent process.”
Richard smiled without warmth. “A relationship with a subordinate. A data leak. Shareholders are going to love this.”
Alexander stood. “Do not confuse my personal mistakes with permission to manufacture a verdict.”
For the first time, Richard’s smile slipped.
After he left, Margaret appeared with an envelope from corporate security. It contained the access-log preservation receipt, not the logs themselves.
“Richard asked security to delete archived records last Friday,” she said. “They refused and escalated it.”
Alexander looked toward the door Richard had used.
“Forward the request to Nadia. Nothing else.”
Margaret nodded. “You really are learning.”
At lunch, Jamie went outside for air. He passed a stationery shop and stopped before its window. A row of fountain pens stood under warm lights, each promising permanence and precision.
He nearly laughed. Six weeks ago he would have bought a pen because it looked expensive. Now the sight made his chest ache.
His phone rang. The number was unfamiliar.
“Jamie Parker?” a woman asked.
“Yes?”
“My name is Nadia Brooks. I’m conducting the independent investigation. Your files were useful. Would you be willing to clarify one detail?”
“Anything.”
“Did Richard ever ask you to use a temporary login link outside the normal company portal?”
Jamie stopped walking. “He sent one himself.”
A pause. “Please don't open it again. Preserve the message.”
“Does that mean you believe me?”
“It means we're following evidence. That's the only promise I can make.”
It was the most reassuring answer Jamie had heard in days.
That evening, Alexander sat alone in his apartment, the pen case resting beside an untouched dinner.
He had once believed the mysterious connection was the problem. He had feared every unexpected sensation and every moment of lost control. Now the pen was still, and the silence felt worse.
He missed Jamie’s terrible jokes. He missed the way Jamie challenged an idea without checking whether it came from the CEO. He missed being seen as a person rather than a title.
Alexander opened a blank message.
I miss you.
He stared at the words. Jamie had asked for space. Alexander deleted the draft and put down his phone.
Across town, Jamie finally answered the apology.
Thank you for saying it. I’m not ready to talk yet.
Alexander read the message once. Then again.
He replied with two words.
I understand.
The next morning, Nadia called Margaret with a request for an emergency meeting. The compromised account had been used from an executive network segment during the leak.
There was more. The forged access trail intersected with a confidential acquisition folder Richard had insisted on controlling.
Nadia would not name a suspect yet. She had enough evidence to expand the investigation and seek an external forensic order.
Alexander agreed without hesitation.
In his own apartment, Jamie received an encrypted attachment from the reporting portal. It was a copy of the authenticated login timeline he had requested.
One timestamp made him sit upright. Richard’s message had arrived eleven seconds before the fraudulent session began.
He called Oliver.
“Tell me I’m not imagining this.”
Oliver studied the screenshot. “You’re not. But don’t confront him.”
“I wasn't going to.”
“You used that voice.”
“What voice?”
“The voice you use before doing something incredibly stupid.”
Jamie laughed despite himself. Then another message appeared on his phone.
Unknown sender: You want to know who framed you? Come alone tomorrow night. No police. No Sterling.
A location followed: a disused warehouse by the river.
Jamie’s smile vanished.
He forwarded the message to Nadia and saved a copy for Oliver.
Jamie called the reporting hotline once more to confirm that the anonymous threat had been received. The operator gave him a reference number and warned him not to contact the sender. He wrote the number on a sticky note beside his laptop.
Oliver watched him tape it to the wall. “You know what I'm proud of?”
“My spectacular filing system?”
“You asked for help before doing something reckless.”
Jamie looked at the message again. “I still want to know who's behind it.”
“You can want answers without walking into a trap.”
For the first time, Jamie recognized that caution did not have to mean surrender. He could remain stubborn and still make a sensible choice. Alexander, of all people, might appreciate that distinction.
He switched off his laptop and finally ate a proper dinner. The threat remained frightening, but it no longer belonged to him alone.
Then he stared at the words no Sterling, wondering who was so afraid of Alexander knowing the truth.
