"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 12 — You're Fired, Jamie Parker
Jamie arrived at work to find his badge disabled.
The security guard looked uncomfortable. “I’m sorry, Mr. Parker. Human resources asked me to escort you upstairs.”
“Is this about the coffee machine? Because I only broke it emotionally.”
The guard didn’t smile.
Jamie’s stomach tightened.
In the executive conference room, Alexander sat beside the general counsel and the head of information security. Richard Vale occupied a chair near the window.
A folder lay open in front of them.
“Jamie,” Alexander said. His voice was controlled, but his face looked unusually pale.
“What’s going on?”
The counsel explained that confidential Harbor documents had been transmitted to an outside address using Jamie’s credentials. The files included pricing models, contract amendments, and proprietary client information.
Jamie stared. “I didn’t send anything.”
“We need to establish that,” the counsel replied.
“Then check the logs. Check my computer.”
“We are.”
Richard leaned forward. “The board is concerned about the reputational risk.”
Jamie turned toward him. “You requested my working files yesterday.”
Richard’s expression remained pleasant. “A routine request.”
Jamie felt the trap tightening, though he couldn’t yet see its shape.
Alexander spoke. “Until the independent investigation is complete, you’re being placed on administrative leave.”
“Leave?” Jamie repeated.
“Paid leave,” the counsel clarified. “Your access will remain suspended. You’ll have an opportunity to respond with representation present.”
Richard frowned. “The board expects stronger action.”
Alexander’s eyes hardened. “The board will receive evidence, not speculation.”
Jamie barely heard him. Alexander was speaking with the same distant precision he used when rejecting a flawed report.
“I thought you knew me,” Jamie said.
Alexander’s expression changed. “I do.”
“Then say it.”
“I believe you didn’t do this. But belief doesn’t replace an investigation.”
Richard cleared his throat. “Mr. Sterling, perhaps your personal involvement—”
“Not another word,” Alexander said.
The room fell silent.
Jamie looked between them. Suddenly he understood that the photograph and the accusation were connected.
“You know,” Jamie whispered.
Alexander nodded. “Legal received an anonymous complaint this morning.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I learned about it minutes before this meeting.”
Jamie wanted to believe him. He also wanted Alexander to stand up, call the entire situation absurd, and make the fear disappear.
But Alexander remained seated, surrounded by lawyers and procedures.
“Jamie,” he said carefully, “I’m recusing myself from decisions about your case. Independent counsel will review the evidence. That’s the only way to protect your rights.”
Jamie heard the explanation. Emotion made it difficult to accept.
“So you’re my boss again,” he said. “That’s all.”
“No.”
“Then why does it feel like I’m alone?”
Alexander rose. “Please listen—”
“Not here.”
Jamie turned to the counsel. “I want copies of the allegations, the audit records, and the preservation notice. I also want my own lawyer present before another interview.”
“Of course,” she said.
Richard’s smile faded. Jamie had stopped pleading and started asking the right questions.

Security escorted Jamie to his desk. He packed a notebook, a framed photograph of his mother, and the ridiculous ceramic cactus Oliver had given him for surviving his probation period.
Oliver appeared at the end of the aisle. “Tell me this is a misunderstanding.”
“It is,” Jamie said. “A spectacularly expensive misunderstanding.”
“I’ll help.”
“Keep your job. Don’t get dragged into this.”
Oliver shook his head. “That’s not how friendship works.”
Jamie hugged him before he could say something embarrassing.
At the lobby doors, Alexander was waiting alone.
“I can have your legal expenses covered by an independent fund,” he said. “No conditions.”
Jamie shook his head. “I need to know what I’m accepting before I accept anything.”
“Fair.”
Alexander took a breath. “I didn’t choose the company over you.”
“You chose a process I don’t understand.”
“A process that can prove what happened.”
“Maybe. But you should have told me about the complaint before I walked into that room.”
Alexander lowered his eyes. “You’re right.”
Jamie had expected a defense. The apology hurt more.
“I need space,” Jamie said.
“You have it.”
“And don’t try to solve this by making a phone call that ruins someone’s career without evidence.”
“I won’t.”
Jamie reached into his bag and removed the black-and-gold pen. It had been sealed inside its case since their agreement.
He placed it in Alexander’s hand.
“Keep this,” Jamie said. “I don’t want another thing connecting us while I’m trying to figure out what’s real.”
Alexander looked at the case as though it weighed far more than it should.
“Jamie—”
“No. You’re my boss again. That’s all I can manage today.”
Jamie stepped outside into the cold morning air and kept walking.
Alexander remained by the glass doors, his reflection staring back at him. He could survive a board revolt. He could rebuild a failed company.
The investigation meeting had lasted less than forty minutes, but Jamie felt as if he had aged a year. He kept replaying Alexander’s face, searching for the moment when the man he trusted had become the executive everyone feared.
He knew, intellectually, that the company could not ignore a serious data breach. He knew an independent investigation was necessary. What he could not understand was why he had learned the accusations in a room full of strangers.
At home, Oliver arrived with takeout and refused to leave until Jamie ate something.
“I’ve been placed on paid leave,” Jamie said. “Apparently my crime is being extremely efficient at things I didn’t do.”
Oliver set down the food. “Did they say you were guilty?”
“No. But Richard looked like he’d already written my obituary.”
“Then we document everything.”
Jamie opened his laptop and showed Oliver the two threatening emails. Oliver read them in silence.
“Why didn’t you tell Alexander?” he asked.
“I was trying to protect him.”
“From what?”
“From me becoming the headline.”

Oliver sighed. “You can’t protect someone by deciding what they’re allowed to know.”
Jamie stared at the untouched noodles. He had accused Alexander of doing exactly that in other situations.
“You’re enjoying being right,” Jamie muttered.
“I’m enjoying being your friend. The right part is a bonus.”
Together they made a timeline: the first email, Richard’s file request, the unexpected password reset, the second threat, and the suspension.
Jamie stopped when he reached the login interruption.
“I entered my password twice,” he said.
Oliver looked up. “Why?”
“The system said my session expired.”
“Did you check the address?”
Jamie closed his eyes. “No.”
“That could matter.”
Jamie wrote it down. For the first time since the meeting, he felt the outline of a question that might lead somewhere useful.
Meanwhile, Alexander refused Richard’s request to announce Jamie’s termination. He instructed the investigator to preserve all relevant devices, including those belonging to senior executives.
Richard objected. “That’s excessive.”
“Then the evidence will show it was unnecessary,” Alexander replied.
Margaret entered with a note from the security team. The two simultaneous logins had originated from different network locations.
Alexander read the note twice, careful not to interfere with the investigation itself. He asked only that the evidence be preserved and reviewed by independent counsel.
He wanted to call Jamie. He wanted to explain everything, including how badly he regretted the surprise meeting.
Instead, he respected Jamie’s request for space and sent one message: You were right. I should have warned you. I’m sorry.
Jamie saw it on his phone beside the untouched takeout. He read it three times, then placed the phone face down.
He wasn’t ready to answer. But he didn’t delete the message.
He had no idea how to repair the look Jamie had given him.
Upstairs, the independent investigator opened the first audit report.
One detail immediately stood out: Jamie’s account had logged in from two locations at the same time.
The investigator circled the timestamps.
Someone had been inside his account.
