"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 9 — Kiss Me Without the Pen
The underground garage smelled faintly of rain and warm concrete. Jamie walked between parked cars until the street noise faded behind them.
Alexander followed at a measured distance, as if approaching a negotiation he had not prepared for.
Jamie turned. “You know, for someone who negotiates billion-dollar contracts, you’re terrible at talking about feelings.”
“Contracts have defined terms.”
“Great. Let’s define some.”
Alexander folded his arms. “Go on.”
“First term: you like me.”
“Yes.”
Jamie blinked. He had expected an argument.
“Second term,” he continued, “you’re not allowed to act like I’m an inconvenience every time you remember that.”
Alexander looked down. “Fair.”
“Third: no career favors. No secret punishment because you’re jealous. No treating me like property.”
“I would never want that.”
“Wanting and doing aren’t always the same.”
Alexander accepted the correction. “Then tell me if I get it wrong.”
Jamie’s voice softened. “I will. Loudly.”
“I’ve noticed.”
They stood in silence, their shadows stretched across the polished floor.
Alexander said, “I should explain something.”
“If this is about the pen, I swear—”
“It isn’t.”
Jamie waited.
“I’ve been attracted to people before,” Alexander said. “But I could always put the feeling aside. With you, I find myself waiting for the next argument.”
“Because my arguments are excellent.”
“Because you look at me as though I’m a person, not a position.”
Jamie swallowed. “You are a person. An exceptionally irritating one.”
“I know.”
Alexander stepped closer, then stopped. “I’m also your boss. That matters. I don’t want you wondering whether saying no could cost you your job.”
“Then don’t make it cost me my job.”
“It won’t.”
“Put it in writing if you have to.”
“I will.”
Jamie smiled. “God, you really are a contract guy.”
Alexander reached toward him, but kept his hand suspended until Jamie moved into it. His palm settled lightly against Jamie’s cheek.
Jamie had imagined the touch would feel like winning an argument. Instead, it made him unexpectedly quiet.
Alexander brushed a strand of hair away from his forehead.
“Tell me to stop,” he said, “and I will.”
Jamie met his eyes. “Then stop acting like my boss for five minutes.”
“What should I be?”
“A man who wants to kiss me.”
Alexander’s composure broke into a small, helpless smile.
“May I?”
“Yes.”
Their first kiss was brief, almost cautious. Alexander drew back before Jamie had decided whether to breathe.
Jamie opened his eyes. “That was suspiciously polite.”
“I was trying not to overwhelm you.”
“You’ve been overwhelming me with spreadsheets for eight months. I can handle a kiss.”
Alexander laughed against his forehead. Jamie caught his lapel and kissed him again.
This time neither rushed. Alexander’s hand rested at Jamie’s waist, warm and steady. Jamie felt the strange relief of being wanted without needing to perform or provoke.
When they separated, Alexander looked as startled as he had in the boardroom on the day the pen first caused trouble.

Jamie grinned. “Your face is doing something.”
“What?”
“Smiling. It’s unsettling.”
“Get used to it.”
Jamie leaned against a pillar, still holding Alexander’s tie.
“Now what?” he asked.
“Now we discuss how to handle this responsibly.”
“You are ruining the mood with compliance.”
“Compliance is important.”
“So is dinner.”
Alexander considered him. “Would you like to have dinner with me tomorrow? Somewhere without coworkers.”
Jamie pretended to think. “Depends. Will you critique my menu selection?”
“Only if you order badly.”
“That’s a yes.”
Alexander’s phone buzzed. A board member wanted an immediate call about the upcoming investor review.
He silenced it.
Jamie raised an eyebrow. “That’s new.”
“It can wait ten minutes.”
“Wow. I should alert the stock exchange.”
They walked toward the exit together. Before they reached the stairs, Alexander stopped.
“One more thing. The pen.”
Jamie groaned. “Of course.”
“We need to keep it secured. No surprises. No experiments unless we both agree.”
“Agreed.”
“I mean it.”
“So do I.”
Jamie held out his hand. Alexander shook it solemnly, which made Jamie laugh.
“Are we shaking on our first kiss?”
“On respecting each other.”
“That’s annoyingly attractive.”
At the street entrance, Alexander ordered a car for Jamie and waited until it arrived.
Jamie looked back before getting in. “Hey, Alexander?”
The use of his first name visibly affected him.
“Yes?”
“I like you too.”
Jamie climbed into the car before he could ruin the moment with a joke.
Alexander remained beneath the awning, watching the taillights disappear.
Neither noticed the security camera mounted above the garage entrance.
In the building’s monitoring room, a contracted technician paused the recording, enlarged a frame, and saved it to a private drive.
The first thing Jamie noticed after the kiss was the absence of panic. He had imagined crossing the line would feel catastrophic, like setting off an alarm in a museum. Instead, the garage remained ordinary. A distant engine started. Water dripped from a pipe.
Alexander, however, looked as though someone had quietly rearranged the universe.
“Are you regretting it?” Jamie asked.
“No.”
“You answered too fast.”
“I’ve had months to think about it.”
Jamie stared. “Months?”
Alexander’s ears colored faintly. “That information was not intended for distribution.”
“Too late. I’m publishing a newsletter.”
Alexander touched Jamie’s wrist. “You’ve been important to me longer than I understood.”
Jamie’s joking reply faded. For a moment he saw not the CEO but a lonely man who had been taught to conceal every need until it became unbearable.
“You could have just asked me out,” Jamie said.
“I thought you hated me.”
“I did. Some days I still do.”
“Comforting.”
“You rejected a proposal because the bullet points weren’t aligned.”
“The numbers were also wrong.”
Jamie laughed. “See? Impossible.”
They discussed what would happen if the relationship ended. It was not a romantic topic, but Jamie insisted on it. He needed to know he could walk away without losing the career he had worked for.
Alexander promised to remove himself from Jamie’s reviews and asked legal to recommend a neutral reporting structure. Jamie promised not to treat every professional disagreement as personal rejection.
“Neither of us is going to be perfect,” Jamie said.
“I’m aware.”
“You looked physically pained saying that.”
Alexander leaned closer. “I’m learning to tolerate imperfection.”
“Excellent. Start with my terrible jokes.”
“I make no promises.”
The laughter made the next kiss easier. Jamie rested his hands against Alexander’s shoulders and felt him relax, a small surrender that seemed more intimate than any grand declaration.
When they finally separated, Jamie took out his phone and opened the calendar.
“What are you doing?” Alexander asked.
“Checking whether I’m free for that dinner you haven’t invited me to yet.”
Alexander looked amused. “Tomorrow, eight o’clock?”
“Seven-thirty. Some of us need sleep.”
“Seven-thirty,” Alexander agreed.
Jamie added the appointment under a private title: Dinner With the Human Iceberg.
Alexander glanced at the screen. “I saw that.”
“Then stop reading confidential material.”
For the first time, Alexander seemed pleased to be the subject of Jamie’s mockery. The teasing no longer felt like a weapon. It felt like an invitation.
The image showed Alexander Sterling kissing Jamie Parker.
The technician typed a short message: You were right. I have proof.
A reply arrived immediately.
Send it to me. And keep the original.
The sender’s name was Richard Vale.
