"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 8 — Why Is My Boss Jealous?
Jamie woke to a message from Alexander: The elevator has been inspected. You can stop calling it our near-death experience.
Jamie replied: You admitted to owning slippers. I consider that a near-death experience for your reputation.
Three dots appeared. Vanished. Appeared again.
Alexander: Be on time today.
Jamie grinned into his pillow. Romance, apparently, looked suspiciously like a performance review.
At work, the elevator incident changed nothing and everything. Alexander corrected Jamie’s slide formatting with ruthless precision, then quietly placed an extra coffee beside his laptop.
Jamie looked at the cup. “Is this a bribe?”
“Your numbers are wrong on page twelve.”
“That’s not a no.”
“Fix the numbers.”
Jamie took a sip. Exactly the way he liked it.
The new marketing director arrived that afternoon. Ethan Brooks was charming, capable, and entirely too handsome for a man wearing a conference badge.
He reviewed Jamie’s campaign concept and smiled. “This is clever. Who came up with the audience split?”
“Me. After finance rejected the version that required optimism.”
Ethan laughed. “Dinner tomorrow? I’d like to hear your ideas without six executives interrupting.”
Jamie hesitated. “Is this a work dinner?”
“Only if you want it to be.”
Across the room, Alexander stopped reading his tablet.
Jamie noticed. Of course he noticed. Alexander had spent months training him to recognize the exact moment disapproval entered a room.
“Dinner sounds good,” Jamie told Ethan.
Alexander’s tablet made a sharp sound against the table.
“Mr. Parker,” he said, “the revised budget is due tomorrow.”
“At four. Dinner is at seven.”
“Perhaps you should review the client’s requirements again.”
“Perhaps the client should stop changing them.”
Ethan’s eyebrows rose. He wisely found another conversation.
When the room emptied, Jamie crossed his arms.
“You just tried to schedule a spreadsheet over my social life.”
“I scheduled nothing.”
“You threatened me with a budget.”
Alexander closed his tablet. “Brooks is new. You don’t know him.”
“He knows how to say please. That’s already impressive.”
Alexander’s expression tightened. “Be careful.”
Jamie tilted his head. “Are you jealous, Mr. Sterling?”
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Too late. I’m devastatingly flattered.”
Alexander walked away before Jamie could see his face properly. Jamie felt triumphant for about twelve seconds.
Then he felt guilty.
Alexander had been honest in the elevator. Jamie had answered that honesty by turning another man into a test.
Oliver was less sympathetic when Jamie confessed over lunch.
“You’re playing games with two people,” he said.
“I didn’t ask Ethan to be part of a game.”
“Then don’t make him one.”
Jamie pushed his sandwich aside. “I don’t even know if Alexander likes me.”
“Does he look at you like he’s trying to solve an impossible equation?”
“Constantly.”
“Then maybe ask him instead of involving an innocent marketing director.”
Jamie hated reasonable advice, especially when it came from Oliver.
The next day, Ethan invited Jamie to a restaurant near the river. They discussed work, then movies, then the strange experience of trying to have a personal life in Manhattan.

Ethan was funny. Jamie enjoyed himself. That should have been enough.
But when Ethan asked whether Jamie was seeing anyone, Jamie’s mind supplied an image of Alexander sitting on an elevator floor in an expensive suit.
“It’s complicated,” Jamie admitted.
Ethan nodded. “The worst relationship status.”
“It isn’t really a relationship.”
“Worse.”
Jamie laughed, relieved by the lack of pressure.
Outside the restaurant, a black company car waited at the curb. Alexander stepped out after finishing a nearby investor dinner.
Jamie saw him before Alexander saw them. For one absurd moment, Jamie wanted to wave.
Then Ethan touched Jamie’s arm and leaned closer.
“Can I kiss you?” Ethan asked.
Jamie’s answer was immediate. “I’m sorry. No.”
Ethan stepped back without argument. “Then I hope whoever you’re thinking about figures it out.”
Across the street, Alexander had seen enough to misunderstand. His expression became carefully blank.
He turned toward the waiting car.
Jamie called Ethan a taxi, thanked him for dinner, and ran across the street before the driver could close Alexander’s door.
“Wait!”
Alexander stopped. “Mr. Parker.”
“Oh, we’re doing surnames now?”
“You’re entitled to spend your evenings however you wish.”
“Thank you for granting me constitutional rights.”
Alexander looked exhausted. “I wasn’t granting anything.”
“Then why do you look like I personally canceled Christmas?”
“Because I have no right to ask what happened.”
The answer surprised Jamie into silence.
Alexander continued, “I’m your employer. Anything I say could feel like pressure. I won’t put you in that position.”
Jamie studied him. There was no anger in his face now. Only restraint.
“I didn’t kiss Ethan,” Jamie said.
“You don’t owe me that explanation.”
“I know. I’m giving it anyway.”
Alexander’s eyes lifted.
Jamie stepped closer. “I went because I was confused. I thought maybe you were jealous.”
“I was.”
Jamie stared. “You were?”
“Yes. It was undignified and none of your fault.”
“That might be the most romantic sentence anyone has ever said to me.”
Alexander almost smiled. “You deserve better sentences.”
“Then try one.”
Alexander looked toward his driver, who suddenly became fascinated by the opposite side of the street.
“I think about you when I shouldn’t,” Alexander said. “I look for you in meetings. I remember things you say. I’ve started buying coffee I don’t drink.”
Jamie’s chest tightened.
“And I don’t know what to do with any of it,” Alexander finished.
Jamie moved close enough to see the faint line between Alexander’s eyebrows.
“Maybe start by not running away,” he said.
“I wasn’t running.”
“You were escaping in a luxury vehicle.”
Alexander exhaled a reluctant laugh.
Jamie reached for his tie, then paused. “Can I?”
Alexander nodded.
The next morning, Jamie made a list of reasons he should not care whether Alexander was jealous. He got as far as reason two before crossing both out.
Reason one was that Alexander was his boss. Reason two was that Jamie had a perfectly respectable life before a haunted fountain pen turned his workplace into a romantic disaster.

Neither reason explained why Alexander’s rare smile had become the best part of his week.
During the budget review, Jamie deliberately kept his attention on the client instead of the man at the head of the table. It worked until Alexander asked a question and Jamie answered too quickly.
“Have you reviewed the sensitivity analysis?” Alexander asked.
“Yes. Three scenarios, two contingency plans, and one deeply personal grudge against the assumptions tab.”
A few people laughed. Alexander did not, but Jamie caught the brief warmth in his eyes.
Afterward, Margaret handed Jamie an updated schedule. “He moved the client call so you wouldn’t have to cancel your dinner.”
Jamie frowned. “He told me to review the requirements.”
“He also told scheduling to leave your evening free. I wouldn’t read too much into it, but I wouldn’t read nothing either.”
Jamie spent the afternoon thinking about that contradiction. Alexander could be demanding, infuriating, and surprisingly thoughtful. The problem was that Jamie had learned to treat every harsh sentence as proof the softer moments were imaginary.
Ethan, meanwhile, had been straightforward from the beginning. Jamie decided the least he owed him was honesty.
At dinner he said, “I’m not sure I’m available for anything romantic.”
Ethan set down his glass. “I appreciate you saying so.”
“I should have said it before accepting.”
“Probably. But I like your ideas, and dinner has been fun.”
Jamie smiled, grateful. “You’re annoyingly mature.”
“I save my immaturity for karaoke.”
They finished the meal as friends. Jamie felt lighter when they stepped outside, until he saw the familiar black car and the man standing beside it.
Jamie curled his fingers around the silk, feeling the pulse of a moment neither could blame on a mysterious pen.
“Come with me,” Jamie said.
“Where?”
“Somewhere we can talk without your chauffeur pretending not to listen.”
Alexander told his driver to go home. Then he followed Jamie into the parking garage, looking less like a man in charge of everything than someone about to take a genuine risk.
