"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 5 — Wait… Can He Feel That?
By Friday, Jamie Parker had developed a theory so ridiculous that he refused to say it aloud, even to himself.
The black-and-gold pen was connected to Alexander Sterling.
Not metaphorically. Not emotionally. In a way that seemed to turn ordinary movement into something the CEO could physically experience.
Jamie had felt that second heartbeat twice since their meeting. Both times, Alexander had been somewhere else in the building. Both times, Jamie had been thinking about the pen.
He needed evidence.
Unfortunately, the evidence was locked inside the most intimidating office in Manhattan.
At ten, Margaret summoned him upstairs to review a client proposal. Jamie arrived with his notebook, three revised slides, and the courage of a man who had already accepted that his career was doomed.
Alexander sat behind his desk, looking perfectly composed.
Jamie had spent much of the weekend trying to forget the office incident. He cleaned his apartment, bought groceries, and watched half a documentary about deep-sea creatures. None of it helped. His mind kept returning to Alexander's unusually vulnerable expression.
“Your presentation needs a clearer opening,” he said.
“Good morning, Mr. Sterling.”
“Good morning. Your presentation needs a clearer opening.”
Jamie smiled. “I appreciate the warmth.”
Alexander pushed the folder across the desk. “The client will decide within forty-eight hours. I need your best work.”
“You'll have it.”
Jamie hesitated. “Can I ask about the pen?”
“No.”
“Excellent. Very productive conversation.”
The prospect of another meeting made Jamie nervous in a new way. He no longer feared only criticism. He feared accidentally doing something he could not undo. That responsibility felt heavier than the pen itself, which now sat far away from his desk.
Alexander looked up. “What do you want to know?”
“Whether the connection is still happening.”
Alexander's jaw tightened. “Yes.”
“Even when we're not touching it?”
“Sometimes.”
“Does it hurt?”
“No.”
Jamie considered that. “Then what does it feel like?”
“Parker.”
Alexander had instructed the specialist to examine the pen without damaging it. The object was valuable for sentimental reasons, but he was increasingly willing to sacrifice it if necessary. What mattered most was restoring a sense of choice over his own body.
“Right. Private.”
Alexander leaned back. “I have asked a specialist to examine the pen. Until then, I want you to leave it alone.”
“Fine.”
“That's an unusually quick agreement.”
“I'm maturing.”
“I'll alert the board.”
Jamie laughed before he could stop himself. Alexander seemed startled by the sound, then looked away.
The exchange should have ended there. Instead, Jamie noticed the pen lying inside a transparent evidence sleeve on the desk. Alexander had evidently removed it from the drawer for inspection.
“May I look?” Jamie asked.
Jamie noticed that Alexander seemed more tired than usual. There were faint shadows beneath his eyes, and his tie was slightly crooked. Nobody else would have seen the difference. Jamie wondered when he had started studying the CEO closely enough to notice such things.

“Without touching.”
Jamie leaned closer. The silver star caught the morning light. “It's beautiful. Your grandfather had good taste.”
Alexander's expression softened almost imperceptibly.
“He believed a good pen made people choose their words carefully.”
Jamie looked up. “That explains why you use emails to destroy people's self-esteem.”
“Parker.”
“Sorry. That was my inside voice.”
Alexander gave him a flat look, but the tension in the room eased.
At lunch, Jamie told Oliver about the grandfather, leaving out the impossible connection.
The revised client pitch was Jamie's strongest work in months. He had interviewed the sales team, reviewed customer feedback, and rebuilt the opening around a concrete problem. He wanted Alexander to see the effort, not simply the finished slides.
“So Sterling has a family history?” Oliver said. “I assumed he was assembled in a laboratory.”
“Same. Apparently he came with sentimental accessories.”
“Careful. You're starting to sound fond of him.”
“I'd rather be fond of a parking ticket.”
Yet Jamie kept remembering the way Alexander had spoken about his grandfather. The voice had been different: quieter, less polished, almost lonely.
Later, Jamie returned upstairs with updated slides. Alexander was on the phone, arguing with a supplier. The pen lay beside the desk in its sleeve.
When the call ended, Jamie pointed at it.
“One test,” he said. “Nothing unpleasant. Just enough to confirm whether the connection is real.”
Alexander studied him. “Explain the test.”
“A single tap. You tell me when you feel it. We compare timing.”
Alexander had expected Jamie to exploit the situation with endless jokes. The younger man certainly joked, but he also asked whether the connection hurt. That question surprised Alexander. He had become accustomed to people wanting answers from him, not worrying about his comfort.
Alexander considered the proposal. “Once.”
Jamie nodded. He touched the sleeve lightly with one finger.
Alexander's eyes narrowed. “Nothing.”
Jamie tapped the capped end through the sleeve.
Alexander's hand tightened on the armrest.
“Now,” he said.
Jamie stared. “No way.”
“That's enough.”
“Just one more?”
“No.”
When Jamie offered to stop the test, the room felt different. Alexander could have issued an order, and Jamie might have obeyed because of their positions. Instead, Jamie listened to a personal boundary. The distinction mattered more than either of them said.
Jamie withdrew his hand immediately. The refusal was unmistakable, and for once he had no joke ready.
“Sorry,” he said. “I got carried away.”
Alexander looked surprised. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For stopping.”
Jamie felt oddly ashamed. He had treated the mystery like a puzzle, forgetting there was a person on the other end.
“I won't do it without asking again,” he promised.
Alexander watched him carefully. “Good.”
Jamie collected the slides and moved toward the door. Then curiosity defeated him.
“Can I ask one last question?”
Oliver noticed Jamie checking his phone after work. He assumed there was a date involved and began guessing names from the office. Jamie denied everything with such unnecessary energy that Oliver became convinced there was a secret romance. Jamie threatened to throw a cushion at him.
“You've already asked seventeen.”
“Do you count them?”
“Yes.”
Jamie grinned. “Is the great Alexander Sterling actually afraid of me?”
Alexander's gaze held his. “I'm concerned about what you might do before thinking.”
“That's fair,” Jamie admitted.
“And about what you might do after thinking.”
Jamie laughed again. “Also fair.”
That evening, Alexander received a preliminary message from the specialist. The pen's materials were unusual, but no conventional mechanism could explain the reported connection.
He read the message twice, then set his phone down.
Alexander had drafted the compliment three times. The first version sounded like a performance evaluation. The second sounded painfully formal. He finally sent the simplest sentence, then wondered why sending praise to a junior employee required more courage than negotiating a merger.
His life had become a problem without a model, a forecast, or a reliable exit strategy.
Jamie, meanwhile, was editing the client pitch at home when a message appeared on his phone.
Alexander Sterling: The revised opening is excellent.
Jamie stared at it.
He typed: Are you being held hostage? Blink twice if you need help.
A reply arrived almost immediately.
Alexander Sterling: Go to sleep, Parker.
Jamie smiled into the dark apartment.
For reasons he did not yet understand, the smile lingered long after he put his phone away.
Across the city, Alexander looked at the message thread and found himself doing something equally unfamiliar.
Jamie read the compliment again before sleeping. He had received praise from clients and colleagues, but Alexander's approval carried an irritating weight. He told himself it was professional satisfaction. The warmth in his chest did not entirely agree.
He smiled too.
