"My Cold CEO Can Feel Everything I Do to His Pen" Chapter 4 — Give Me Back My Pen
Jamie entered Alexander Sterling's office expecting a lecture about spreadsheet margins. Instead, the CEO pointed at his shirt pocket and said, “The pen.”
Jamie looked down. “Good morning to you too.”
“Give it to me.”
“Which pen?”
Alexander's expression turned glacial. “The black-and-gold fountain pen you've been carrying.”
Jamie pulled it out. “Oh. This?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it belongs to me.”
Jamie had expected the CEO to summon him for a mistake, not a missing object. The accusation irritated him before he understood it. He was tired of feeling as though every conversation began with a verdict and ended with an assignment.
Jamie examined the silver star. “You could've started with that.”
“I'm starting with it now.”
Jamie held the pen just beyond Alexander's reach. “How do I know it's yours?”
“Parker.”
“People claim lost things all the time. Last month somebody stole my lunch from the office fridge and said it looked communal.”
“Your lunch is not relevant.”
“It was a very good sandwich.”
Alexander stood. “The pen was a gift from my grandfather. The engraving is a silver star, and the nib bears his initials, E.S.”
Jamie unscrewed the cap and checked. The initials were there.
“Oh,” he said, genuinely embarrassed. “Okay. Sorry. I found it near the elevator. I meant to turn it in.”
He offered the pen.
Alexander's grandfather had carried the pen during his final years in business. He had taught Alexander to write thank-you notes by hand, insisting that people deserved more than hurried messages. The pen was one of the few objects Alexander kept for reasons unrelated to value.
Alexander reached for it at the same instant Jamie stepped sideways to avoid a stack of files. Their hands collided around the barrel.
The reaction was immediate.
Alexander felt a sharp, bewildering surge of awareness. His breath stopped. Jamie, meanwhile, felt a brief, impossible flutter, as though someone else's racing heartbeat had sounded inside his ears.
Both men let go.
The pen landed on the carpet.
“What was that?” Jamie asked.
Alexander stared at him. “What did you feel?”
“I don't know. Like my heart skipped, except it wasn't my heart.”
Alexander's face became unreadable. “Sit down.”
“Do I have to?”
The collision startled them both. Jamie had touched Alexander's hand before, once while passing a contract, but never noticed how warm it was. This time the sensation was so peculiar that he stepped away without thinking, suddenly conscious of the distance between them.
“Yes.”
Jamie sat, reluctantly. Alexander retrieved the pen using a folded handkerchief and set it on his desk.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
“Have you noticed anything unusual while carrying it?” Alexander asked.
“Unusual how?”
“Anything you cannot explain.”
Jamie considered the question. “My boss started interrogating me about stationery.”
“This is serious.”
“So is my answer.”
Alexander turned toward the windows. The city stretched beneath him, orderly and distant. He had spent his entire adult life making uncertainty manageable through preparation, money, and discipline.

None of those tools helped now.
Alexander hated how quickly his composure deserted him. He had prepared a simple retrieval: identify the object, establish ownership, take it back. Instead, the room had become an impossible laboratory, and the employee he usually corrected was asking questions he could not answer.
“Two weeks ago,” he said, “I lost that pen. Since Monday, I've experienced unusual physical reactions whenever you appear to handle it.”
Jamie stared. “You think I'm doing something to you?”
“I think the timing is significant.”
“That's insane.”
“I agree.”
It was the first time Jamie had heard Alexander admit anything so readily.
“Okay,” Jamie said slowly. “Maybe it's static electricity.”
“Through six floors?”
“Very ambitious static electricity.”
Alexander did not laugh, but the corner of his mouth moved.
Jamie noticed. “Wait. Did you almost smile?”
Jamie tried to think scientifically. Perhaps there was a hidden device inside the pen. Perhaps Alexander had a neurological condition triggered by certain sounds. Neither possibility explained the borrowed heartbeat. He decided to stop pretending the problem was ordinary.
“No.”
“You did.”
“Focus.”
They agreed to test the connection without making physical contact. Alexander stood at the far end of the office while Jamie tapped the pen once against a notebook.
Alexander's fingers curled. He kept his face still.
Jamie tapped again. Alexander inhaled sharply.
Jamie stopped. “You felt that?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Alexander gave him a look that could have frozen a lake.
“Somewhere private,” he said.
The first test frightened Jamie more than he admitted. The reaction was immediate, clear, and impossible to dismiss. Alexander's expression barely changed, yet his grip on the chair revealed the effort required to stay still. Jamie suddenly understood why the CEO had seemed so strange.
Jamie blinked, then looked from the pen to Alexander's carefully controlled expression. Understanding arrived in stages, each more astonishing than the last.
“Oh,” Jamie whispered.
“Do not finish that thought aloud.”
Jamie pressed his lips together. His shoulders began to shake.
“Are you laughing?” Alexander asked.
“No.”
“You are visibly laughing.”
“It's a medical response.”
“Parker.”
“Sorry. Sorry. This is terrible.”
He was still smiling.
Alexander wanted to lock the pen away and forget the incident. He also wanted to know whether it was dangerous, whether anyone else could trigger it, and whether it could expose him in public. Every answer depended on an object that had become disturbingly unpredictable.
Alexander extended a hand. “Give me the pen. Permanently.”
Jamie handed it over. “Gladly. I don't want to be responsible for whatever that was.”
Alexander placed it inside a desk drawer. He turned the key and slipped it into his pocket.
“There,” he said. “Problem solved.”
Jamie stood. “Great. Can we pretend this conversation never happened?”
“With pleasure.”
They almost made it to the door before Alexander's phone rang. It was Evelyn Price, demanding immediate confirmation of a contract amendment.
Alexander answered, distracted. Jamie paused beside the desk to collect his notebook.

The drawer rattled.
Both men froze.
Jamie looked at Alexander. Alexander looked at the drawer.
The pen lay inside, untouched, yet a strange current seemed to linger between them. Jamie heard that borrowed heartbeat again, faint but distinct.
When Jamie apologized, he meant it. He was often sarcastic, but he did not enjoy frightening people. Alexander's blunt admission had stripped away the usual office performance. For the first time, Jamie saw a man trying to manage something that genuinely scared him.
“Alexander?” Evelyn said through the phone. “Are you listening?”
“Yes,” he answered. “I'll call you back.”
He ended the call.
Jamie took a cautious step backward. “You felt it too, didn't you?”
Alexander nodded once.
“So putting it away doesn't fix anything.”
“Apparently not.”
Jamie stared at the locked drawer. “What happens if you throw it away?”
“I don't intend to experiment with an object I don't understand.”
“That's unusually reasonable.”
“Leave before I reconsider.”
After the meeting, Jamie checked the lost-property policy. The instructions were straightforward and embarrassingly overdue. He promised himself he would be more careful next time, though he hoped there would never be another mysterious object requiring a private audience with the CEO.
Jamie reached the doorway, then turned.
“Mr. Sterling?”
“What?”
“For what it's worth, I really didn't know.”
Alexander looked at him for a long moment. “I believe you.”
The words surprised them both.
Downstairs, Jamie told Oliver that the CEO had reclaimed his missing pen. He omitted everything else. Oliver was disappointed by the lack of drama.
Jamie, however, could not forget the borrowed heartbeat, the way Alexander's hand had trembled, or the expression on his face when he admitted something was wrong.
For the first time, Jamie wondered what lay beneath that immaculate armor.
Upstairs, Alexander unlocked the drawer. The pen rested quietly against the dark wood.
He touched its cap with one fingertip.
Somewhere downstairs, Jamie felt that strange second heartbeat again.
Alexander considered calling his physician again, then imagined explaining that an employee could apparently influence his body through a pen. Reeves would insist on more tests. The problem was not the doctor's competence; it was that Alexander lacked the words to make the experience sound believable.
He looked up from his screen.
“Oh, you've got to be kidding me,” he whispered.
