"The Maid Who Made the Mafia Boss Stay" Chapter 1
The Sound Behind the Door
"If you leave that patch, Clara, I'll look like a very expensive tennis ball."
His mother was laughing.
Bennett Hale stopped outside her bedroom with his phone still pressed to his ear. A man at the other end was explaining why a shipment had gone missing from a Chicago warehouse.
"I'll call you back," Bennett said.
He ended the call before the man could answer.
The door stood open a few inches. Through the gap, he saw a white towel draped around his mother's shoulders and silver hair scattered across it.
Clara Reed knelt beside Eleanor's wheelchair, holding electric clippers. Her housekeeping apron was folded on the dresser. Tears slid down her face while she carefully worked around his mother's ear.
"Hold still," she said. "You're making this harder."
"You should have seen what I put my hairdresser through."
"I'm beginning to understand why she retired."
Eleanor laughed again, then caught Clara's wrist when the younger woman's hand trembled.
"Look at me, sweetheart. It's only hair."
Clara switched off the clippers.
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. Just promise you won't put one of those awful turbans on me. Bennett ordered twelve. I look like a woman about to predict someone's divorce."
Bennett's hand tightened around his phone.
He had ordered the head coverings after an assistant mentioned them. Cashmere. Silk. Whatever might make things easier.
Eight months into his mother's illness, buying something was still the first thing he knew how to do.
He could make men abandon entire businesses with a quiet conversation. He could have a specialist flown into Illinois before dinner. But he had no idea how to walk into that room without making both women stop smiling.
Clara lifted a small mirror.
Eleanor studied herself. Her mouth pressed together, and Bennett took an involuntary step forward.
Then Clara lowered the mirror.
"We don't have to look anymore."
"No," his mother said. "Give it back. I want to get used to myself."
Clara obeyed. With her free hand, she held Eleanor's.
Bennett stood there until his mother raised her chin.
He left before either woman saw him.
Downstairs, Marcus Ward rose from a chair near the study. His security chief had been with him long enough to recognize a change in his face.
"Everything all right?"
"Why was a housekeeper using clippers on my mother?"
Marcus blinked. "I don't know."
"Find out who was on duty."
The words came easily. A name, a responsibility, a problem he could correct.
Marcus glanced toward the stairs. "Do you want me to ask your mother?"
"No."
Bennett heard the sharpness in his own voice.
His phone lit up again. He silenced it and went into the study.
There were medical summaries on his desk. He read every one of them. He knew the dates of Eleanor's treatments, the names of her medications, the cost of the adjustable bed she hated.
He could not remember when he had last asked whether she wanted company.
An hour later, Clara appeared in the doorway. She had changed her blouse, but a strand of silver hair clung to her sleeve.
"Mr. Ward said you wanted to see me."
"Come in."
She stepped inside without sitting. He remembered approving her employment six months earlier. A clean background check. Good references. He had hardly looked at the photograph.
Now she stood in front of his desk, her hands clasped tightly enough to whiten the knuckles.
"Were you told to shave my mother's head?" he asked.
"She asked me to help her."
"There are nurses here."
"I offered to get one. She wanted me."
He leaned forward. "And you didn't think I should be consulted?"
For the first time, her expression changed.
"About her own hair?"
The question landed between them.
Bennett looked at the silver strand on her sleeve, then back at her face.
Clara drew a breath.
"If you're going to dismiss me, please let me say goodbye to her first. She'll think I left without telling her."
