"I Hid My Name—Then Got Pregnant by the Mafia Heir" Chapter 8
What My Father Left Me
The apartment had a view of an air shaft and a couch that looked comfortable until I sat on it.
It was quiet. I could leave whenever I wanted.
I hated how much I missed him.
Liam arrived with groceries and a plant he said was difficult to kill, which I thought was an insensitive standard under the circumstances.
"It's a peace lily," he said.
I looked at him.
He looked at the leaves, then closed his eyes. "I'm taking it back."
That made me laugh hard enough to hurt.
He put the groceries away while I took my father's watch from its case. The leather lining had begun peeling at one corner. I pressed it flat with my thumb.
"You still carry that everywhere," Liam said.
"My father wore it when he taught me to drive. He kept looking at it like he expected the lesson to shorten his life."
Liam smiled. "You reversed into a hedge."
"It was a large hedge."
"That generally makes it easier to see."
I turned the case over. A brittle corner of card protruded beneath the loose lining.
I had noticed the ridge years ago and assumed it was part of the cardboard base. Now, with the leather lifting, I could see print.
I eased it out.
It was a deposit receipt from an independent document-storage company. My father's name. A date ten days before he died. An account number, and a handwritten line across the bottom.
For Beth, if needed. Ask for the sealed packet.
My father had called me Beth when he wanted me to stop being stubborn.
I sat down very slowly.
Liam crouched in front of me.
"What is it?"
I handed him the card.
He read it twice. Then he reached for his phone.
"Nora?" he asked.
I nodded.
Not Alessandro first. Not because I didn't trust him, but because I needed to know that I could find something belonging to my father without immediately placing it in someone else's hands.
Nora came the following afternoon. She had already spoken to the storage company without discussing the contents of the account. The company still existed. The account had been funded in advance, and my father had named me as an authorized recipient under my birth name.
"They'll need to verify your identity and the documents linking your names," she said. "I can help with that. It won't happen by waving a receipt at someone."
For once, a delay felt reassuring. My father's last hope wasn't sitting behind a counter waiting for anyone who knew his name.
We arranged the verification. I gave Nora the papers from my name change that I had kept folded in a plastic sleeve for four years.
Then I called Alessandro.
He answered on the first ring.
"Are you all right?"
"Yes. I found something. Nora's helping me access it."

He listened while I explained.
When I finished, he said, "What do you need from me?"
I closed my eyes.
That question shouldn't have made my throat ache.
"Can Rafe take me when it's ready?"
"Yes."
"And can you come over tonight? Just you. I don't want a meeting."
A pause.
"What time?"
He arrived at seven with takeout in a plain paper bag. No flowers. No expensive apology shaped like something I was supposed to wear.
At the threshold, he waited until I stepped aside.
We ate noodles on the hostile couch. He wore jeans and a dark sweater, and the sight of him without armor was unfairly distracting.
"How's the door?" I asked.
He set down his carton. "The restriction is gone. So is the system setting that allowed it. Rafe checked the emergency exit arrangements with me."
I looked at him.
"You didn't need to rebuild your house because we fought."
"I needed to stop being able to repeat the same mistake by pressing a button."
I put my chopsticks down.
He let me sit with that.
"I miss you," I said finally.
His face changed, not dramatically, just enough for me to see what he had been holding still.
"I miss you too."
"I'm still angry."
"I know."
"And I don't want to spend my life discovering how much fear it takes for you to stop listening to me."
He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.
"Neither do I. I've asked someone outside the business to help me work on that. Not someone my father chose."
He looked uncomfortable saying it. I loved him a little more for not polishing the admission.
The thought frightened me.
I reached for his hand instead of saying it.
Three days later, Nora placed the sealed packet on her conference table.
There were copies of transfer instructions, handwritten notes, and a letter to me. The original records would stay with Nora while specialists assessed them. I opened the letter with fingers that didn't feel like mine.
Beth,
If you're reading this because I was too stubborn to bring it home myself, I'm sorry. I have found things I can't explain away. Your mother thinks I'm being dramatic about keeping copies. She also insisted I put them somewhere safe, so remember she was usually right.
Whatever happens, don't carry this alone. Find someone who can help you without asking you to be grateful for the rest of your life.
I stopped there.
The chair beside me moved. Alessandro had come because I had asked him to, and now he sat without reaching for the letter.
"Do you want me to go?"
I shook my head.
He offered his hand. I took it and finished reading.
My father had not predicted his own death. The rest of the letter proved that. He complained about paperwork, told me where the spare apartment keys were, and asked whether I had forgiven him for criticizing a man I had briefly dated.
That ordinary hope broke me more completely than a farewell would have.
Alessandro held me while I cried, and nobody asked me to stop.
Outside the office afterward, I stood beside his car with the letter in my bag.
"I'd like to come home," I said.
He looked at me carefully. "Which home?"
"The one with the terrible toast."
He laughed once, unsteadily.
I put my arms around him before he could open the door.
For the first time, going back didn't feel like surrender.
