"The Mafia Boss Could Buy Anything—Except My Trust." Chapter 8
The Empty Chair
Damian picked up his phone six times before noon.
He drafted messages that sounded like orders. He deleted them. He drafted apologies that explained why he had been right. He deleted those, too.
At one, Paul came in.
"The driver has been dismissed," he said.
Damian looked up.
"She asked him to leave. I assumed you wanted that respected."
He heard the question beneath the statement.
"Yes."
"Good. Mrs. Alvarez needs a decision about Miller's paperwork."
"Give her the notice pay. Whatever the contract says. More if—"
He stopped.
Paul waited.
"Whatever the contract says," Damian finished. "And a reference."
Paul nodded.
"No one follows her," Damian added.
"Understood."
The word sounded heavier than usual.
That evening, his mother asked for the girl with the book.
"She's not here today," Leah said.
"Why not?"
Damian stood beside the chair Tessa usually occupied.
"She had to leave."
Beatrice frowned. "You're always making people leave."
He could not know whether she understood what she had said. That did not make it easier to hear.
"Would you like me to read?" he asked.
She pulled at her cardigan.
"You read too fast."
"I'll try not to."
He found the paperback in the drawer. Tessa had left a grocery receipt between the pages. On the back she had written three names with arrows between them, apparently an attempt to untangle the mystery for Beatrice.
He sat and began.
His mother interrupted him twice to ask where she was. Once she told him to stop. He stopped.
After ten minutes, she asked why he was sitting there doing nothing.
He began again.
At nine she fell asleep. He closed the book with his finger marking the place because he could not bear to use Tessa's receipt.
Leah adjusted the lamp.
"You can go eat," she told him. "I'll call if she needs anything."
"Does Tessa always know what she wants?"
The nurse looked at him.
"No. Nobody always knows."
"It looked easier when she did it."
"You saw the parts that worked."
He thought of nine days of images, carefully selected by his own attention. Tessa laughing. Tessa waiting. Tessa making sense of his mother when he could not.
He had mistaken that for an inexhaustible resource.
Over the next four days, the house continued functioning.
Meals arrived. Sheets were changed. His mother's good mornings and difficult evenings came without regard for his unhappiness. Mrs. Alvarez hired temporary help. Leah gave him clear instructions when he asked what he could do.
There was no catastrophe that justified calling Tessa back.
He had almost wanted one. He admitted that to himself in the darkness of his bedroom and disliked himself for it.
On Tuesday, he called his attorney.
"I need a complete record of what was done with Miller's loan. No summaries. Every payment and communication."
"Is there a dispute?"
"Yes. With me."

There was a pause.
"I'll send it over."
The settlement had closed Hale's account. A written release existed. No rights had been transferred to Damian or his companies. He asked the attorney to explain that in plain language and to offer, at Damian's expense but without reporting to him, an independent review by a lawyer Tessa selected.
Then he called the driver himself.
"Delete the address from your personal phone. Any future booking must come from her."
"Of course, Mr. Costa."
He did not feel better afterward. He was beginning to understand that improvement was not always accompanied by relief.
On Wednesday evening he sat at his desk and wrote a message without asking Paul to make it sound reasonable.
I paid Hale after you told me not to. I arranged the car without asking. Then I used your work to try to make you stay in the room. You were right to leave.
He read it once and continued.
Your loan account has been closed. I don't own it, and you owe me no repayment. I will send the records if you want them, along with contact details for an independent review. You can choose someone yourself. They won't report to me.
He paused over the last lines.
I'm sorry I made you question what happened between us. I would like to speak to you. You can say no.
He sent it before he could change that last sentence into a request for an immediate answer.
There was no reply that night.
On Thursday, Mrs. Alvarez told him Tessa had asked for the documents through her.
"I sent them," she said. "And I sent her final pay information separately."
He nodded.
"Is she all right?"
Mrs. Alvarez's expression softened without becoming indulgent.
"You should let her answer that when she's ready."
That evening he read to Beatrice again. She fell asleep before the chapter ended.
He finished it quietly.
His phone lit up on the table beside him.
For a moment he could not bring himself to look.
Then he did.
Tessa's message contained no greeting.
You can come to the diner on Saturday at three. My shift ends at four. You can wait or you can leave. Don't bring anyone to sit at the next table.
Damian looked at his sleeping mother.
He typed: I'll be there.
Then, after a moment: Alone inside. Paul will drive me. That's the truth, and I won't pretend otherwise.
Her reply arrived several minutes later.
Okay.
He put the phone down and opened the book to the next page.
