"My Childhood Bully Became My Husband" Chapter 11 — HIS LIPS ARE SOFT
Lucian escaped Sebastian's bedroom without answering a single question.
He spent the next morning convinced that every object in the townhouse was judging him.
The kettle judged him. The staircase judged him. Even the little ceramic fox on the windowsill seemed to know he'd kissed Sebastian's forehead and then stared at his mouth.
Sebastian, infuriatingly, behaved normally.
“Morning,” he said over coffee.
Lucian narrowed his eyes. “That's all?”
“What else should I say?”
“Nothing.”
“Then we're in agreement.”
Lucian stabbed his scrambled eggs with unnecessary force.
Sebastian had left a note on the counter beside Lucian's lunch container.
Don't forget to eat. Your afternoon class runs late.
There was nothing romantic about a reminder to eat. Lucian told himself so three times.
Then he folded the note carefully and put it in his wallet.
He hated that he was becoming the kind of person who saved scraps of paper. Worse, he knew exactly whose fault it was.
At university, he told Nolan he was considering moving to a cabin in the mountains.
“Why?” Nolan asked.
“Fresh air.”
“You hate bugs.”
“I'll buy a screen.”
“You hate being alone.”
Lucian stared at his friend. “Are you going to help or not?”
Nolan studied him. “Did Sebastian do something?”
“No.”
“Did you do something?”
Lucian's silence answered for him.
Nolan grinned. “Oh, this is excellent.”
“It's a disaster.”
“Those aren't mutually exclusive.”
Lucian refused to elaborate. He went to his afternoon studio session and tried to concentrate on a charcoal drawing.
Without thinking, he sketched a familiar pair of eyes.
He covered the page with his arm before anyone could see.
By evening, rain had begun to fall. Sebastian was reading in the study when Lucian arrived home, damp and irritated.
“There's a towel on the chair,” Sebastian said.
“I know where towels live.”
“Good. Your education is progressing.”
Lucian threw the towel at him. Sebastian caught it, smiling.
The lights went out at nine seventeen.
A click, a faint mechanical sigh, and the townhouse fell into darkness.
Lucian stopped in the hallway.
“Sebastian?”
“In the study.”
“Did you do that?”
“Personally? No.”
Thunder rolled above the rooftops. Lucian flinched.
He had hated sudden darkness since childhood, when a storm had trapped him and Sebastian in a shed behind the lake house.
He would rather swallow an entire lemon than admit he was still afraid.
Sebastian found a flashlight in the desk drawer. Its beam crossed the room and settled on Lucian's face.
“Come here,” he said.
“I'm fine.”
“I didn't ask.”
Lucian followed the light into the study anyway.
Sebastian sat on the sofa and switched on a battery-powered lantern. The warm glow softened the room, turning bookshelves into tall shadows.
“Remember the horror movie at the lake house?” Sebastian asked.
Lucian groaned. “Don't.”
“You insisted you weren't scared.”
“I wasn't.”
“You slept under my blanket.”
“The guest room was cold.”

“It was August.”
“Very unpredictable weather.”
Sebastian laughed. Lucian sat beside him, leaving a careful space between their knees.
Another thunderclap sounded. He moved closer before he could think better of it.
Sebastian didn't comment. He merely adjusted the lantern so its light reached both of them.
For a while they listened to the rain.
“Can I ask you something?” Lucian said.
“Of course.”
“Why was that old picture on your phone?”
Sebastian turned toward him. “You saw it?”
“By accident.”
“It's one of my favorites.”
“It's blurry.”
“Only the background.”
Lucian's breath caught. He stared at his hands.
“You say things like that,” he whispered, “and then you act as if nothing happened.”
Sebastian's voice grew serious. “What would you like me to do?”
Lucian didn't know. He wanted Sebastian to stop confusing him. He wanted him to keep doing it. Both wishes seemed equally impossible.
“Tell me the truth,” he said.
“About what?”
“About us.”
Sebastian was silent long enough that Lucian looked up.
“I don't want to rush you,” Sebastian said. “And I don't want you mistaking gratitude for something else.”
Lucian swallowed. “What if I already know it's something else?”
Sebastian's gaze moved to his lips, then returned to his eyes.
Thunder cracked. Lucian caught Sebastian's shirt without thinking.
“Still scared?” Sebastian asked softly.
“Shut up.”
“Then why are you holding on to me?”
Lucian raised his chin. “Maybe I like your shirt.”
“It's an old shirt.”
“Maybe I like old things.”
Sebastian's smile faded into something gentler.
“Lucy,” he said, “can I kiss you?”
The question settled between them, quiet and enormous.
Lucian could have made a joke. He could have demanded another explanation. Instead, he nodded.
Sebastian leaned in slowly enough that Lucian could change his mind.
Their lips met.
The kiss was soft and brief, nothing like the dramatic scenes Lucian had seen in movies. That somehow made it more overwhelming.
When Sebastian started to draw back, Lucian tightened his fingers in the shirt.
Sebastian paused. “Okay?”
Lucian nodded again. “Don't look so pleased with yourself.”
“I'm trying not to.”
“You're failing.”
Sebastian kissed him once more, gently. Lucian felt himself smile before he could hide it.
When they separated, he pressed his forehead against Sebastian's shoulder and wished he could remain there until his heartbeat became normal.
For a moment after the kiss, neither seemed interested in speaking.
Lucian traced the seam of Sebastian's sleeve with one finger, pretending the movement required intense concentration.
“Was that your first kiss?” Sebastian asked.
Lucian gave him an offended look. “You don't get to interrogate me.”
“Fair enough.”
Lucian hesitated. “Was it yours?”
“No.”
He tried not to look disappointed. Sebastian noticed anyway.
“But it was the first one I waited this long for,” Sebastian added.
Lucian stared at him. “That's a ridiculous thing to say.”
“True things often sound ridiculous to you.”
“Only when you're saying them.”
Sebastian reached for his hand. Lucian let him take it.
There was no dramatic music, no perfect declaration. Just rain, the lantern, and the extraordinary realization that Sebastian's hand fit around his as naturally as it had when they were children crossing slippery rocks by the lake.
“Are we going to talk about this tomorrow?” Lucian asked.
“If you want to.”
“And if I don't?”
“Then I'll wait.”
Lucian looked at him for a long time. “You make waiting sound easy.”
“It isn't,” Sebastian admitted.
Lucian gave his hand a small squeeze. Sebastian squeezed back, and that simple answer felt like another promise.
The lights returned with a sudden hum.
Lucian sat up as if he'd been caught stealing something.
“Power's back,” he announced.
“So I see.”
“I should check the freezer.”
“An excellent idea.”
Lucian fled to the kitchen. The freezer was fine. His dignity was not.
He lay awake half the night replaying the kiss. Every time he decided it hadn't meant anything, he remembered Sebastian asking permission, and his chest warmed all over again.
At breakfast, Lucian tried to act as if nothing had changed.
Margaret had stopped by with fresh pastries, and the three of them sat around the kitchen table.
Sebastian buttered his toast. “By the way, Lucian. Your lips are softer than I expected.”
Lucian nearly dropped his mug.
Margaret's hand froze halfway to the jam.
“Oh,” she said with delighted calm. “Now this is interesting.”
