"My Childhood Bully Became My Husband" Chapter 10 — YOU'RE IN CHARGE OF MY CARE
Lucian spent the next morning avoiding Sebastian's study.
He had heard Margaret's words. He had also heard Sebastian begin to answer, but a passing delivery truck had drowned out the reply.
Now every ordinary glance felt suspicious.
At breakfast, Sebastian offered him the last blueberry muffin. Lucian examined it as if it might contain a secret message.
“It's a muffin,” Sebastian said.
“I can see that.”
“Then why are you interrogating it?”
“Maybe I don't trust your motives.”
“My motive is that you ate the other three.”
Lucian took the muffin. “Fair.”
The afternoon brought a follow-up appointment. Sebastian's doctor reviewed his progress, adjusted his exercise schedule, and approved another stage of recovery at home.
“He's doing better,” the doctor said, “but recovery isn't a competition.”
Lucian looked pointedly at Sebastian.
“I heard,” Sebastian said.
“Then act like it.”
The doctor smiled. “It helps to have someone who notices the warning signs.”
Sebastian glanced at Lucian. “He notices everything.”
“Not everything,” Lucian muttered.
On the way home, they stopped at a pharmacy. Sebastian bought the prescribed supplies while Lucian selected a ridiculous collection of colored pens, sticky notes, and a clipboard.
“Are you opening a hospital?” Sebastian asked.
“No. I'm organizing one very difficult patient.”
At home, Lucian spread his purchases across the dining table.
“New system,” he announced.
Sebastian sat opposite him. “I dread those words.”
“Rule One: No staying up past midnight to work.”
“Reasonable.”
“Rule Two: No alcohol until the doctor says otherwise.”
“Also reasonable.”
“Rule Three: No making fun of the caretaker.”
“Unconstitutional.”
“Rule Four: The caretaker gets control of the television remote.”
“Now we're entering dangerous territory.”
Lucian kept writing. “Rule Five: You must tell me when something hurts instead of pretending you're a marble statue.”
Sebastian's expression changed. “That one matters.”
Lucian paused, surprised by the seriousness in his voice.
“Good,” he said softly. “Then promise.”
“I promise.”
Lucian looked back down before Sebastian could see how much that meant to him.
They discussed the rest of the plan, including times when a professional nurse could step in. Sebastian insisted that Lucian continue attending classes and working on his art.
“You're not giving up your semester to look after me,” he said.
“I never said I would.”
“You considered it.”
“Only for about twelve seconds.”
“An alarming twelve seconds.”
Lucian stuck out his tongue.
By dinner, the care schedule was posted beside the refrigerator. Sebastian studied it, took a pen, and added a line at the bottom.
Lucian leaned over his shoulder.
RULE SEVEN: MY CARETAKER MUST GIVE ME ONE GOODNIGHT KISS.
His face burned.
“Absolutely not.”
Sebastian looked innocent. “It's a suggestion.”
“You wrote it in permanent ink.”
“A confident suggestion.”
Lucian grabbed a red marker and crossed it out so thoroughly that the paper nearly tore.
Sebastian laughed.
“Keep dreaming,” Lucian said.
“I often do.”
Lucian didn't ask what he dreamed about.

The next morning's physical therapy session had left Sebastian tired but optimistic. Lucian sat beside him afterward and watched him record the exercises in a notebook.
“You write everything down,” Lucian said.
“That's how I remember.”
“Even things that aren't important?”
Sebastian turned the page. In the margin was a tiny sketch of a crooked sailboat.
Lucian recognized it immediately. “That's my boat.”
“The one you lost at seven.”
“You remember that?”
“You cried for forty minutes.”
“Because you said it would sink.”
“It did sink.”
“Not the point.”
Sebastian tapped the drawing. “I made you another one.”
Lucian remembered a second boat, painted bright yellow, waiting on his pillow the following morning. He'd never known who made it.
“Was that you?” he asked.
Sebastian closed the notebook. “Who else would put up with you?”
Lucian opened his mouth, then closed it. The answer should have annoyed him. Instead, he found himself smiling at the floor.
He spent the rest of the afternoon revising his sculpture proposal. Sebastian reviewed his presentation slides, offering practical suggestions without taking over. For once, they worked in the same room without arguing.
Lucian found that peaceful silence with Sebastian felt different from silence with anyone else. It was full of things he wasn't brave enough to say.
That night, Margaret called to say she'd reached home safely. She asked about the appointment and reminded Sebastian to be patient.
“And Lucian?” she added when Sebastian handed him the phone.
“Yes, Aunt Maggie?”
“Make sure you take care of yourself too.”
Lucian smiled. “I will.”
She hesitated. “And remember, you never owe anyone affection because they've been kind to you.”
Lucian blinked. “I know.”
“Good. That's all I wanted to say.”
After the call, he sat quietly with his sketchbook. The strange conversation left him thoughtful, but not unhappy.
Sebastian had asked for a kiss as a joke. He hadn't demanded one. He'd let Lucian cross out the rule.
That distinction mattered more than Lucian expected.
Before closing his laptop, Lucian found the digital photograph from the lake house. He zoomed in on Sebastian's face and studied it as if it were a difficult art assignment.
Sebastian's expression wasn't possessive or smug. It was simply happy.
Lucian tried to remember what had made him laugh that day. A joke, probably. Sebastian had been the only one who could make him furious and then make him laugh five minutes later.
He saved the photograph to a private folder, embarrassed by the tenderness of the gesture.
At dinner, Sebastian asked whether Lucian had considered submitting his sculpture to the spring exhibition.
“I don't know if it's good enough,” Lucian admitted.
“You've worked hard on it.”
“That doesn't answer the question.”
“No,” Sebastian agreed. “But you keep improving it. That's what good artists do.”
Lucian studied him across the table. Sebastian had always been demanding, but he rarely offered praise he didn't mean.
“Would you come if I entered?” Lucian asked.
“Of course.”
“Even if it's terrible?”
“Especially then. Someone will have to defend you from the critics.”
Lucian threw a napkin at him, laughing.
At eleven, he finished his coursework. The house was quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator and the faint rain against the windows.
He went upstairs to check whether Sebastian needed anything.
The bedroom door was ajar. Sebastian lay on his back, one hand resting beside a closed book. His breathing was slow and even.
Lucian stepped inside.
“You're asleep,” he whispered. “Finally.”
He checked the water glass, adjusted the edge of the blanket, and made sure the lamp was within reach.
Then he stood there, watching Sebastian's face.
Without the usual stern expression, Sebastian looked younger. Less like a man who always knew what to do and more like the boy who'd once built a crooked treehouse for them.
Lucian remembered the handwritten rule.
He could leave. He should leave. Nothing would happen if he did.
Instead, he sat carefully on the mattress.
“This doesn't count,” he whispered. “You're not even awake.”
He leaned down and pressed a light kiss to Sebastian's forehead.
For one suspended second, the world seemed perfectly still.
Lucian began to pull away.
Sebastian's eyes opened.
“Wrong place, Lucy.”
Lucian froze, his face inches from Sebastian's.
He looked at Sebastian's mouth before he could stop himself.
Sebastian noticed.
Neither of them spoke.
