"My Childhood Bully Became My Husband" Chapter 4 — THE BREAKING POINT
Sebastian came home with a carefully written rehabilitation plan and a warning to avoid unnecessary strain.
Lucian met him at the door holding a shopping bag full of expensive orthopedic supplies.
“I got you a support cushion. And a heating pad. And this weird pillow that's supposed to—”
“Put it down.”
Lucian stopped. “I was helping.”
“I know.”
Sebastian's voice was flat, exhausted. He moved slowly toward the bedroom, one hand resting on the wall for balance.
Lucian followed at a distance.
He wanted to apologize properly. Every time he opened his mouth, though, he imagined Sebastian looking at him with disgust.
So he bought things instead.
Fresh groceries arrived in the morning. A premium meal service came at noon. By evening, the bedroom resembled a showroom for recovery equipment.
Sebastian surveyed the boxes. “What is all this?”
“Stuff you need.”
“I need quiet. I need rest. And I need you to stop making decisions without asking me.”
Lucian's cheeks warmed. “I spent hours finding these.”
“Then you wasted hours.”
The words landed hard.
“I was trying to fix it.”
“You can't buy your way out of this.”
“I know that!”
“Do you?”
Lucian felt his eyes sting. “You don't have to be cruel.”
Sebastian turned toward him, gripping the edge of the dresser.
“Do you think everything is a game, Lucian? You could have killed me.”
The room went utterly still.
Lucian had heard Sebastian angry before. He had heard lectures, threats to confiscate things, weary sighs. He had never heard fear buried beneath the anger.
“I didn't want to hurt you,” he said.
“But you did.”
Lucian pressed his lips together. His apology had become too large to fit through his throat.
He nodded once and left the room.
In the guest bedroom, he dragged a suitcase onto the bed. His hands shook as he folded sweaters. He packed without thinking, stuffing socks into shoes and dropping a sketchbook onto the floor.
He called Nolan, who answered on the third ring.
“Can I stay with you?”
“Sure. What happened?”
“I messed up.”
“How badly?”
Lucian looked toward the hallway. “Really badly.”
Nolan didn't ask more. “I'll make space.”
Lucian zipped the suitcase. Before leaving, he wrote a note and placed it on the kitchen island.
I'm sorry. I know that's not enough. I won't bother you anymore.
He stood beside the front door for a long moment, waiting for Sebastian to call his name.
Nothing.
The silence felt deserved, which somehow made it worse.
Lucian reached for the handle.
From the bedroom came a dull thud.
He froze.
Another sound followed, low and strained, almost swallowed by the walls.
“Sebastian?”
No answer.
While Sebastian rested, Lucian tried to remember the last time anyone had refused a gift from him. He couldn't.
For his eighteenth birthday, his father had offered him a car. When Lucian complained about the color, another car arrived two weeks later. When he disliked a class, a tutor appeared. When he broke something, somebody else replaced it.

Sebastian had never worked that way.
At twelve, Lucian had lost an expensive watch during a boat ride. Sebastian made him search the dock for two hours before helping. At fifteen, Lucian failed an exam and demanded the teacher change the grade. Sebastian sat with him until midnight, reviewing the material instead.
Lucian had called him cruel then, too.
Now he looked at the stack of unopened medical supplies and understood how little those purchases said about remorse.
He took out a notebook and wrote a list.
Ask before buying things. Learn the medication schedule. Follow the therapist's advice. Listen when Sebastian says no.
He stopped at the last item. It was the hardest one.
He tore out the page, folded it, and put it in his pocket.
Later, as he waited in the hospital corridor, Nolan arrived with two sandwiches and a bottle of water.
“You didn't have to come,” Lucian said.
“Someone has to make sure you eat.”
Nolan sat beside him. “Tell me what you need.”
“I need to go back three days.”
“Can't do that.”
“I know.”
“Then start with what you can do.”
Lucian stared at the emergency doors. “Stay. Tell the truth. Help him if he lets me.”
“That sounds like a plan.”
Lucian took a bite of sandwich. It tasted like cardboard, but he finished it.
When the doctor returned, Lucian asked clear questions and wrote down the answers. He didn't interrupt. He didn't argue. He asked what symptoms would require urgent care and what assistance Sebastian might need after discharge.
The doctor explained that a professional would determine the appropriate support and that Sebastian should make his own decisions whenever possible.
Lucian wrote that down, too.
For once, he didn't want to be the loudest person in the room. He wanted to be someone Sebastian could trust.
Lucian dropped the suitcase and ran.
Margaret arrived before dawn, her coat still damp from the rain. She sat beside Lucian and listened while he described the second collapse.
“I'm sorry,” he said again.
“I know you are.”
“Do you want me to leave?”
Margaret considered the question carefully. “That's something Sebastian should decide. He has a right to his own space.”
Lucian nodded. He hadn't thought of it that way before.
“I keep trying to make him feel better,” he admitted, “but I think I'm really trying to make myself feel less guilty.”
“That is an important difference.”
Margaret handed him a paper cup of warm tea. “When you were little, you used to demand that Sebastian forgive you immediately after every argument.”
Lucian managed a weak smile. “He never did.”
“No. He always wanted you to mean it first.”
Lucian stared at the steam rising from the cup. “I do mean it now.”
“Then give him time to believe you.”
The hospital doors opened again. This time a nurse came through and told them Sebastian was resting comfortably.
Lucian's shoulders dropped. He hadn't realized how tightly he'd been holding himself.
He took the folded list from his pocket and added one final line: Don't demand forgiveness.
Then he put the paper away and waited for morning.
Sebastian was on the floor beside the bed. One leg lay awkwardly beneath him, and his face was white with pain.
Lucian knelt immediately. “Don't move. I'm calling for help.”
Sebastian caught his sleeve weakly.
“Leg's numb,” he said. “Couldn't reach the phone.”
Lucian's breath hitched. “I'm here.”
He called the medical team, described the symptoms, and followed their instructions. He didn't try to lift Sebastian himself.
While they waited, he sat beside him, holding his hand.
“I was leaving,” Lucian confessed.
“I saw the bag.”
“I thought you wanted me gone.”
Sebastian shut his eyes against another wave of pain. “I wanted you to understand.”
“I do.”
“Do you?”
Lucian swallowed. “I didn't before. I do now.”
Sebastian's fingers tightened around his.
Lucian looked at the suitcase abandoned in the hallway and felt suddenly ashamed of how easily he'd chosen escape over accountability.
“You can hate me,” he whispered. “I'll still make sure you're okay.”
Sebastian didn't say he hated him.
He only held on until the paramedics arrived.
At the hospital, Lucian sat beneath a fluorescent light and watched the automatic doors open and close.
Every time they parted, he stood.
Every time the person walking through wasn't Sebastian's doctor, he sat again.
For once, there was no one he could argue with, no rule he could tear up, and no expensive purchase that could make the waiting stop.
He had to stay.
And he did.
