"“You’re My Daddy.” The Little Girl Who Changed a Billionaire’s Life" Chapter 8
WHAT SOPHIE HAD BEEN ASKING
Clara was on the sofa with Sophie tucked against her side.
She wore a brown cardigan and sensible shoes. A paper bag from a bakery rested on the floor. Nothing about her suggested a woman who had spent thirty years keeping my family out of hers.
Then she saw Elena come through the door, and her spine straightened.
"You gave her the card?" Elena asked.
Clara glanced at Sophie.
"Yes."
"She's six, Mom."
"I didn't send her alone. I told her to show it to you if she wanted to talk about her father. I should have given it to you myself."
Sophie pulled her feet under her.
Beth rose and quietly collected her raincoat. I walked her to the door and thanked her. Sal remained near the kitchen. Julian stood by the window, apart from everyone.
When I turned back, Elena was kneeling in front of her daughter.
"Why didn't you show me?"
Sophie picked at a loose thread on her sock.
"You would get sad."
"You can talk to me even when I'm sad."
"I asked if Daddy lived far away, and you said you had to make dinner. Then I asked if he liked children, and you said to brush my teeth."
Elena's hand stopped halfway to the child's knee.
I knew she remembered. I could see it in the way her face changed.
"I thought I wasn't supposed to ask anymore," Sophie said.
A bus went past outside, rattling the window. Nobody in the room spoke until it was gone.
Elena sat back on her heels.
"You were allowed to ask. I should have listened."
Sophie's chin trembled.
"Are you mad because I went by myself, or because I found him?"
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
"Because you left and I couldn't find you. I was afraid something had happened to you. I'm not angry that you found your dad."
"Even if you don't like him?"
Elena looked at me.
There were years inside that look. An early morning in my apartment. A message she thought I had sent. A baby she had held alone.
"That part is complicated," she told Sophie. "But you loving him doesn't hurt me."
I had to turn toward the table for a moment.
Sophie slid off the sofa and came to stand beside me. She leaned against my knee, waiting until I looked down.
"Did I make trouble at your work?"
"You interrupted a meeting."
Her face fell.
"A meeting I didn't want to attend," I added.
She considered that before deciding I was telling the truth.
"Do they know you're my dad now?"
"They know you came to find me."
"Can I come again? With Mommy?"
I looked toward Elena. She nodded once.
"Yes. With your mom."
Sophie rested her cheek against my sleeve. It was not another desperate embrace. She simply leaned on me, as if she had begun to believe I would hold her weight.

I put a hand on her back.
Clara watched us. When our eyes met, she didn't ask me to understand her choices.
She looked ashamed.
Sophie was nearly asleep on her feet by the time Elena suggested bed. I lifted her carefully. The bear slipped, and she tightened her arm around it without opening her eyes.
"Mind the door," Elena whispered.
I clipped my shoulder against the frame anyway.
She caught the bear before it fell and placed it beside Sophie's pillow. Its face pointed toward the room.
"She likes him watching the door," Elena explained.
Sophie stirred when I pulled the blanket up.
"You came back."
"I said I would."
She caught one of my fingers. I stayed until her grip loosened.
Back in the living room, Elena stood in front of her mother.
"I read your letter. I know Julian is my father. I know you asked Vittorio to keep him away. What I don't know is why you let me spend my whole life thinking there was nothing to ask about."
Clara gripped the strap of her handbag.
"At first I was angry. He'd chosen Vittorio over me. Then Gabriel died, and everyone was fighting. I wanted you out of that house, out of their arguments."
"You got me out. You could have told me later."
"I meant to."
"When?"
Clara had no answer that survived the question.
Julian moved away from the window. He set a packet of tissues beside her, then returned to his chair rather than sitting at her side.
"I deserved to be angry with you," Clara told him. "I made that into permission to do things I didn't have the right to do."
He looked at his hands.
"I gave you reasons. Then I used your anger to excuse not trying harder."
Elena stood between them, listening to both parents admit what had kept them out of reach.
I remembered wanting them to explain themselves in a way that would make everything simple. Watching her now, I understood that an explanation could hurt almost as much as the original lie.
"When I told you about Matteo, you knew his name," she said to Clara.
"Yes."
"And you told me to forget him."
Clara's mouth shook.
"I believed he'd treated you the way his family had treated us. I didn't know about Nico. I didn't know the messages were false."
"You still should have told me what you knew."
"I should have."
Elena looked at the hallway. Her voice lowered.
"I let Sophie think she couldn't ask about her father. I did that because I thought I was sparing her. I don't need you to tell me how it happens."
Clara began to cry. Elena didn't immediately move to comfort her.
I was glad. She had spent enough of the evening trying to make other people less uncomfortable.
After a while, Clara opened her bag and took out a narrow folder wrapped in a cloth.
"There's something else. Something I don't want you learning from another person."
Elena's shoulders sagged.
"Please tell me it's the last thing."
Clara laid the folder on the table.
"Gabriel made a promise about you. Vittorio put it into documents. You should have been told about it when you became an adult."
I recognized the heading on the first page.
The Gabriel Caruso Family Trust.
