"“You’re My Daddy.” The Little Girl Who Changed a Billionaire’s Life" Chapter 6
MY GODFATHER'S DAUGHTER
Julian arrived carrying the same battered leather case I remembered from childhood.
His hair had gone white. He stood in the hallway beneath a flickering light, looking past me before he seemed able to help himself.
Elena was by the table.
I saw him recognize her mother's face in hers.
He gripped the handle of the case so tightly his knuckles paled.
"Thank you for letting me come."
Elena folded her arms.
"I haven't decided what happens after that."
"I understand."
He waited until she moved aside before entering. I shut the door and took the chair nearest hers.
Julian set his case down but remained standing.
"Are you my father?" Elena asked.
He tried to answer and had to swallow first.
"I believe so. Your mother says I am in the letter Nicolas sent me. The dates fit. But you don't have to accept my word, or hers. We can confirm it."
"You believe so," she repeated.
"Yes."
"Then start with what you actually know."
He sat only when she pointed at a chair.
I used to think that Julian could make any difficult conversation easy. He had talked me through scraped knees, school fights, the first terrible weeks after my mother's death.
Now he couldn't seem to find a comfortable place for his hands.
"I met Clara when she worked in your father's archive," he said to me. "I was his attorney. His friend, before that."
"I know."
"You know the version we told children."
Elena shifted beside me.
"What did you do?"
Julian looked at her.
"I helped Vittorio take control of a company his brother had helped build. Gabriel agreed to sell part of his interest because he believed the business was in serious trouble. It wasn't. I prepared the documents that made him believe it was."
The radiator knocked in the corner.
I remembered my father describing that transaction as the moment he saved the family.
"Clara found the underlying reports," Julian continued. "She told me to correct what I'd done before she went to Gabriel herself."
"And you didn't," Elena said.
"I asked for time. Then I asked for more. Vittorio realized something was wrong. He reminded me who paid for my mother's care and who employed my younger brother."
I knew those reminders. My father could deliver one gently enough that the listener thanked him.
"You chose him," Elena said.
Julian looked down.
"I chose the life I was afraid of losing. Clara left me. I hadn't known she was pregnant."
"When did you find out?"
"After Gabriel had offered to look after her."
Elena pulled the photograph closer.
Julian watched her touch the baby's blanket with one finger.
"Gabriel knew Vittorio would use a child of mine to keep me obedient. Clara had copies of the real reports. If she became Gabriel's responsibility in the family's eyes, Vittorio would have to confront his own brother to get at her."

"So he claimed her baby," I said.
"Inside the family. It wasn't a birth certificate. It was a claim that if anyone pressured Clara, Gabriel would treat it as an attack on him."
"And you let that happen?"
He met my gaze.
"For a while, I told myself she must have been seeing him. It let me feel betrayed instead of ashamed. Then Gabriel came to me. He told me the truth, and he asked if I intended to spend the rest of my life letting him do what I should have done."
I glanced at Elena. Her hand had gone still on the photograph.
"We reconciled," Julian said. "We were going to confront Vittorio together and demand that he restore what Gabriel had lost."
"The night of the accident?" I asked.
Julian nodded.
He described rain, a truck crossing the median, a road he still couldn't drive without remembering the call. There was no assassin waiting in the story. No convenient villain I could punish for my uncle's death.
Gabriel had been driving to meet him.
"Vittorio blamed me. I blamed him. We stopped talking about the documents and started talking about whose fault it was that Gabriel got into a car. Clara took Elena and left."
Elena put the photograph down.
"And thirty years passed."
Julian flinched.
"Vittorio told me she'd made a condition. If I cared about her, I'd leave her alone. Later, there were returned letters. I found out which town she'd moved to. I could have knocked on her door."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because if she opened it, I would have had to face what I'd done."
Elena laughed once, without humor.
"You were afraid of a woman opening a door. She was raising a child by herself."
"I know."
"Do you?"
He took an envelope from his case and pushed it toward her.
"I didn't know enough. I'm beginning to."
She recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.
The letter confirmed what Vittorio's had said. Julian was Elena's father. Gabriel had agreed to protect them. Clara had asked that Julian stay away, then put off explaining why until the right time became a year, then another.
The letter had never reached him. Nico had found it recently and sent it a few days earlier.
Elena read to the end without speaking. Julian watched her with tears gathering beneath his eyes.
I wanted to make him stop looking at her that way. I wanted him to understand that wanting a daughter didn't mean he had earned one.
Then I remembered myself on the marble floor that morning.
Sophie appeared in the hallway, dragging the bear by one paw.
"Why is everyone still here?"
Elena went to her immediately. Julian's face changed when he saw the child, and Sophie moved closer to her mother.
He looked away, giving her space.
"I can go," he said.
Elena settled Sophie beside her on the sofa.
"You can finish first."
The girl held the bear toward me. A ribbon around its neck had come undone.
I fumbled with it until she put her fingers over mine and showed me how to make a smaller loop.
Julian watched, then stared at the floor.
Elena's eyes met mine over Sophie's head. I couldn't tell what she was thinking. For once, I didn't pretend I could.
"Where did Nico find your letter?" I asked Julian.
"At the old house. They discovered a concealed compartment while clearing it for the sale. Two weeks ago. He said he'd been wrong about something terrible."
My phone vibrated.
Marco had found Nico's car outside the family estate in Westchester.
I showed Elena the message.
She looked down at her daughter, waiting until the child's eyes drifted closed.
"I'm coming," she said. "He doesn't get to explain what he did to me while I'm not in the room."
