"My Sister-in-Law Framed Her Father. I Found the Footage" Chapter 8
The Last Time She Cried
Vanessa came back on Saturday morning.
The new key wouldn't turn in the front lock.
I heard her trying it from the dining room, where I was helping Arthur separate personal papers from company records. He looked toward the door but didn't stand.
The bell rang.
Then Daniel's phone.
He showed Arthur the caller's name.
"Do you want to speak to her?"
It was a simple question.
Arthur took a moment to answer.
"In the sitting room. She can come in, but she doesn't go upstairs."
Daniel opened the door.
Vanessa wore jeans and a pale coat. Her hair was pulled back without the usual smoothness. She held a small overnight bag.
She looked like someone arriving after a disaster, hoping the sight of her would make questions feel cruel.
"You changed the locks," she said.
"Dad did," Daniel answered.
Her eyes moved toward Arthur.
He remained in his chair.
"I need some clothes," she said.
"Claire packed what you asked for in your message," Daniel replied. "Your other belongings can be collected by arrangement."
She looked at me.
"You went through my room?"
"I took the clothes you listed from the drawers you specified. Your jewelry box and papers are untouched."
She looked disappointed that there was nothing to argue about.
Arthur directed her to the sitting room.
We followed. I sat beside the window rather than beside Daniel. I wanted room to watch without making this feel like a rehearsed family tribunal.
Vanessa put down her bag.
"Richard says you've turned everything over to outsiders."
"I've asked for independent advice," Arthur said.
"You know how this will look."
"I know how Thursday looked."
Her mouth trembled.
"I've said I was desperate."
"You haven't said what you did," he replied.
She looked at Daniel.
"Can we talk alone?"
He glanced at his father.
Arthur rose slowly.
"I need to rest my wrist. Claire, would you help me with the papers?"
He wasn't granting Vanessa another chance to separate the family. He was choosing not to sit through whatever she intended to ask of his son.
We returned to the dining room. The sitting-room door remained open.
At first I heard only Vanessa's low voice.
Then Daniel said, "I won't tell them that."
Arthur stopped sorting.
"Danny, listen to me. You approved the summaries. You can say the payments were your decision. Richard thinks that would make this manageable."
"They weren't my decision."
"You wouldn't be saying anything completely untrue. You signed things."
"I also told Ruth to stop asking questions because I believed you. That was wrong. I'm not covering it with another lie."
A chair shifted.
"You don't understand what happens to me if this keeps going."
Daniel didn't answer.
I looked at Arthur. He held a sheet of paper so tightly its corner had folded into his palm.
Vanessa began to cry.

"You promised Mom you'd look after me."
Arthur closed his eyes.
Daniel's voice changed when he replied. It became quieter.
"I remember what I promised her. She didn't ask me to pretend you never hurt anyone."
"You sound like Claire."
"I should have listened to Claire sooner."
I stared at the stack of papers in front of me.
For months, perhaps years, I had been the convenient explanation whenever Vanessa couldn't get what she wanted from him.
Hearing him reject that explanation didn't erase the past.
It gave me something real to measure the future against.
Vanessa stopped crying as abruptly as she had begun.
"She has made you ashamed of your own family."
"I'm ashamed I helped you hurt Dad. I'm ashamed I dismissed my wife. Neither of those feelings came from her telling me to have them."
Silence.
Then Vanessa walked into the dining room.
Her cheeks were wet, but her eyes were furious.
"Are you enjoying this?" she asked me.
Arthur stood.
"Don't speak to her like that."
"Of course. She saved you. I understand the new arrangement."
"There is no new arrangement," I said. "I saw you injure him and blame him for it. I wasn't going to help you."
She looked at the bandage around his wrist.
For one second, she seemed unable to maintain her expression.
Then she turned back to him.
"You could still settle this. You have money. You always have money when it matters."
Arthur put down the page.
"I sold your mother's harbor property because I thought I was buying you another chance."
Vanessa's lips parted.
"I never asked you to sell it."
"You asked me to make the problem go away. I chose how. That was my mistake."
His voice shook, but he continued.
"I won't pay for another silence."
She stared at him.
"I'm your daughter."
"I know. That's why this hurts."
The answer took the anger out of her face for a moment.
Daniel came into the doorway.
"Rachel has offered a meeting on Monday. You can bring someone independent to advise you. You should. Richard can't be the only person explaining your position to you."
Vanessa gave a small, bitter smile.
"You think he'll let me blame him?"
Nobody answered.
It was the first time she had spoken as though Richard might be a problem she couldn't charm away.
Her phone rang.
She looked at it, declined the call, then read the message that followed.
Her face changed.
I saw fear arrive without any performance around it.
"What is it?" Arthur asked.
She held the phone against her chest.
Daniel didn't move to take it.
"If you want us to understand something, you'll have to show us."
She looked from him to Arthur.
Then she handed over the phone.
Richard had sent a draft statement for her to approve.
It said Vanessa had acted alone in creating the disputed documents, misunderstood his advice, and used his name without his knowledge. It described Northbridge's payments as representations she had made to him.
Beneath it, he had added one sentence.
This is the only route I can offer if you want to keep Daniel out of it.
Daniel read it aloud.
Vanessa sank into the nearest chair.
"He told me he'd protect me."
Arthur looked at her for a long time.
I thought he might sit beside her. I thought he might promise to handle everything.
Instead, he put the phone on the table between them.
"Then you need someone who doesn't benefit from you believing him."
