"My Sister-in-Law Framed Her Father. I Found the Footage" Chapter 7
The Email He Had Ignored
"What did you do with it?" Rachel asked.
Daniel rubbed his thumb along the edge of his wedding ring.
"I forwarded it to Richard."
"And then?"
"He said it concerned a historical arrangement Dad had authorized. Vanessa called me afterward. She was crying."
I looked down at the table.
The room didn't need another reminder of how well that had worked.
"What did she tell you?" Arthur asked.
"That Ruth was making her look dishonest because she disliked her. That every payment had been approved. That if I made a fuss, I'd damage relationships we depended on."
Ruth Ellis had worked in the accounts office for nineteen years. She sent Arthur a birthday card every January and never claimed mileage for trips she could combine with her own errands.
I had met her twice.
I couldn't imagine her starting trouble for entertainment.
"Did you speak to her?" I asked.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I told her Richard was handling it."
"Did you ask to see what concerned her?"
He shook his head.
Arthur looked away.
For a moment, the resemblance between them was painful. Both men had been offered an uncomfortable truth. Both had accepted an easier explanation from someone they trusted.
Rachel waited until Daniel looked back at her.
"I need the whole correspondence."
"I understand."
"If your reply discouraged further questions, the accountant needs to know that too."
He stared at his laptop bag by the chair.
"I signed off on the annual summaries," he said. "I asked whether there were any unresolved issues, and Richard said no. I didn't check the underlying invoices."
"Then give us the information that allows us to establish that clearly."
His phone lit up on the table.
Richard.
Daniel watched it ring out.
A message followed.
Before you share internal correspondence, remember whose approvals are attached. I strongly suggest we speak first.
Daniel read it, then passed the phone to Rachel.
"Save that too," he said.
I hadn't realized I was holding my breath until it left me.
He opened his laptop and began searching.
Nobody praised him for it. There was too much work to do, and the work was overdue.
Over the next hour, our kitchen table filled with the ordinary language of a long-running deception.
Nothing said STEAL MONEY HERE.
It said temporary arrangement, client development, discretionary settlement.
It said Arthur is aware.
It said no need to involve Daniel while he is busy with operations.
Richard had put his reassurances in writing often enough to make them useful.
Daniel exported entire threads and transferred them directly to Rachel. He included his own impatient replies.
One was only two sentences.
Richard has confirmed the arrangement. Please process it and avoid upsetting the family over an accounting classification.
I read it once.
Daniel watched me.
"I sounded like him," he said.
I didn't ask which man he meant.

Rachel arranged a call with Ruth and the outside accountant. Arthur authorized the release of the relevant company records. Daniel asked to speak first.
Ruth's voice came through the speaker, careful and distant.
"Good morning, Daniel."
He closed his eyes.
"I owe you an apology. You raised a concern last year, and I dismissed it without checking."
Silence.
Then she said, "I kept the documents."
He bowed his head.
"I'm glad you did."
She told Rachel she had continued retaining the records even after she was told to stop circulating questions. She had not approved the disputed services herself. She had noted who instructed the payments.
That distinction mattered to the accountant.
To me, what mattered was the restraint in Ruth's voice. She had spent a year being careful because Daniel had taught her that honesty might make her job less secure.
"Your position here isn't at risk because you asked questions," he said.
"I would appreciate that in writing," she replied.
"You'll have it."
After the call, he wrote it with Rachel's help.
In the afternoon, Richard sent a letter stating that Arthur had known about and approved financial assistance to Vanessa. It described the current disagreement as the result of strained family relationships and suggested that accusations might expose Daniel's own failures of oversight.
Rachel read it without changing expression.
Arthur did not.
"I paid back money she had already taken," he said. "I didn't authorize her to keep taking it."
"We need the records to show the difference," Rachel replied.
There was no single page that could solve everything. That frustrated Arthur. I saw him fight the urge to call Richard and demand that thirty years of friendship count for something.
Instead, he handed Rachel the old repayment agreement.
The money was described as repayment of unauthorized withdrawals.
Richard had drafted that sentence himself.
For once, his careful wording served someone else.
Late that afternoon, Daniel found the thread from the week before Margaret's birthday dinner.
Vanessa had asked him to acknowledge receipt of several company summaries. Richard had attached the signature packet.
Daniel opened the attachment.
The pages bore the same document reference as the ones Vanessa brought into the hallway. But the page above his signature concerned acknowledgment of financial summaries, not witnessing Arthur's authorization.
Rachel leaned forward.
"Don't edit or resave that attachment. Forward the original message to me."
Daniel did.
Then he opened the rest of the thread.
A reply from Vanessa had been included below Richard's covering message. It looked as though Richard had forwarded more of their exchange than he intended.
Daniel stopped scrolling.
"Claire."
I came around the table.
The message was dated two days before the dinner.
He won't sign while he thinks he can keep saying no. Danny will be easier once he believes Dad is becoming aggressive. Please make sure the hallway feed is dealt with before we try again.
I read it twice.
Arthur stood behind us.
Nobody had to explain what it meant.
Vanessa hadn't lost her temper and improvised a lie.
She had planned which fear to put inside her brother. She had planned which part of her father to discredit. She had planned how to remove the camera from the story.
Daniel rested both palms on the table.
"She called me easier," he said.
The hurt in his voice was so exposed that I wanted to touch him.
I did, briefly, between his shoulder blades.
Then he straightened and sent the thread to Rachel.
He didn't delete the sentences that made him look foolish.
He didn't call Vanessa to give her time to explain them away.
He pressed Send.
