"My Sister-in-Law Framed Her Father. I Found the Footage" Chapter 5
What He Had Paid For
Arthur's wrist wasn't broken.
The clinician wrapped it, advised him to rest it, and asked how the injury had happened. Arthur answered without looking at Daniel.
"My daughter grabbed me and pushed a door into me."
My husband sat with his hands locked between his knees.
There was no dramatic response. No one gasped. The clinician simply wrote down what Arthur said and asked whether he felt safe returning home.
He looked at me.
"I will if the locks are changed."
On the drive back, Daniel arranged it.
Vanessa called him four times. He didn't answer while driving. At a red light, he sent her one message asking her to remain available and leave the documents where they were.
Her reply filled his screen.
You don't get to give me orders in my father's house.
He passed me the phone so I could read it.
Arthur looked out the window.
"She's right about one thing," he said. "You don't give the orders there. I do."
"I wasn't trying to take over, Dad."
"Then ask me before you decide what I need."
Daniel nodded.
It wasn't a comfortable journey.
By the time we returned, Vanessa had gone. Her bedroom door stood open, drawers pulled out, a scarf on the floor. The blue folder had disappeared with her, but Daniel still held the pages she had handed him.
He put them in a clean envelope.
Paul arrived with a technician a little after noon. They worked in the security room while a locksmith changed the exterior locks. Arthur sat in the kitchen because he said he wanted somewhere without a camera.
I made tea.
Daniel tried to call Richard again. Arthur asked him to stop.
"I need a different lawyer. Eleanor knows someone."
It was the first time he had mentioned Margaret's sister since Christmas.
"Do you want me to call her?" I asked.
"I'll do it. After I've told you both something."
He placed his uninjured hand flat on the table.
"Four years ago, Vanessa took money from the company."
Daniel didn't move.
"How much?"
"Just under six hundred thousand dollars, in the first set of withdrawals we found."
The refrigerator motor clicked off.
I could hear a drill working on the side door.
"You found?" Daniel repeated.
"Your mother and I."
He drew a slow breath.
"Mom knew?"
"She found it. False invoices paid to Northbridge Consulting. Vanessa controlled the account."
"What did she say the invoices were for?" I asked.
"Introductions to new clients. Marketing work. Things that sounded plausible until Margaret asked to see what we'd received."
Daniel pushed his chair backward.
"I remember Northbridge. Richard told me those accounts had been reviewed."
"He told me he could arrange repayment and keep the matter contained."
"And you believed him."
Arthur looked at his son.
"Yes."
The answer offered no comfort.
"That's what the harbor property was for," Daniel said.

Arthur nodded.
The property had been a small commercial building Margaret and Arthur owned personally. I remembered Daniel asking why it had sold so quickly. Arthur had said he didn't want to deal with tenants anymore.
We had all accepted it.
"I put the proceeds into the company," Arthur said. "Richard drew up an agreement acknowledging what Vanessa owed me. She promised to close Northbridge and make regular payments."
"Did she?"
"For six months."
Daniel stood.
He crossed to the sink and gripped the edge.
"You watched me tell people how responsible she had become."
Arthur lowered his head.
"I wanted that to be true."
"You let me put her in charge of vendor relationships."
"Richard said there would be controls."
"Richard isn't her father. You are."
Arthur's mouth worked without sound.
I set his tea closer to his good hand.
Daniel turned toward me.
"You don't have to keep protecting him."
"I'm giving him a cup of tea."
He stopped.
His anger was justified. So was Arthur's shame. But I wasn't going to let the truth about one become permission to humiliate the other.
"Your father helped her hide a serious problem," I said. "That doesn't make her story about this morning true. Both things can be wrong."
Daniel looked at the bandage.
"I know."
Arthur lifted the cup but didn't drink.
"Margaret wanted an independent review. I asked her to wait. She was ill, and I told myself the last thing she needed was our daughter being dragged through an investigation."
His voice broke.
"She said the last thing she needed was to leave me with a lie I couldn't afford."
I glanced at the kitchen doorway.
Margaret's height marks for the children were still penciled on its frame. Daniel at nine. Vanessa at six. Arthur had varnished around them when the kitchen was renovated.
"Did you think Vanessa would stop because you paid?" I asked.
He nodded.
"I thought the fright would be enough."
"And when she stopped repaying you?"
"She said business was slow. Then she said she was depressed. Then she stopped coming to dinner for a month."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I called her every night that month. She told me you were angry because she wouldn't join the family business full-time."
Arthur looked at him.
They sat with the different stories she had given them.
For the first time, nobody tried to fit those stories together on her behalf.
Paul knocked on the open kitchen door.
"We've preserved what's still on the recorder," he said. "The hallway sequence is incomplete now, but your phone captured part of what was deleted. The logs are intact."
He held a printout.
"A remote maintenance account was used. Your daughter requested temporary access for an adviser two weeks ago. We have her email."
"Who was the adviser?" Daniel asked.
"The request names Hale Advisory."
Arthur set down his cup so carefully it barely made a sound.
Paul explained that the technician was removing remote access and changing credentials. He would retain the records and provide them to an independent examiner if requested.
He didn't promise miracles.
He gave us something better: a clear account of what had survived.
After he returned to the garage, Arthur picked up his phone.
Eleanor answered on the second ring.
"Arthur?"
His shoulders shook once.
"You were right," he said.
Silence.
Then her voice became very gentle.
"Tell me what's happened."
He told her enough that she stopped asking questions and began making arrangements.
She would come the following morning. She had Margaret's records. She also knew an attorney who had never worked for Richard.
Before she hung up, Arthur asked why she had kept the papers.
I heard her answer through the quiet kitchen.
"Because my sister asked me to. And because paying Vanessa's debt didn't explain how the money left in the first place."
Arthur pressed his fingers against his eyes.
"I should have called you years ago."
"Then don't waste tomorrow defending yesterday."
He put down the phone.
Daniel sat again.
This time he didn't sit beside me.
He sat across from his father, where they would have to look at each other.
