"My Sister-in-Law Framed Her Father. I Found the Footage" Chapter 3
His Name on the Page
"We need to get upstairs," I said.
Daniel was still looking at the van.
A man in navy trousers stepped out of the driver's seat. A woman followed from the passenger side carrying a clipboard. Neither wore a police uniform.
Vanessa pointed toward the house.
Daniel opened the security-room door and nearly collided with Arthur.
His father had put on a cardigan. The ice pack was gone, but a pale bandage circled his wrist. Without his glasses, he squinted at our faces.
"Did you find it?"
Daniel made a sound I had never heard from him before.
"Dad, I'm sorry."
Arthur went very still.
"Then you saw."
"I should have listened to you."
His father's gaze moved past him to me.
I nodded.
"I have a recording on my phone. Someone interfered with the system, but I saved what I could."
Arthur closed his eyes briefly.
Daniel reached for him. His father didn't step away, but he didn't lean into the embrace either.
"Vanessa has brought people here," I said.
Arthur's eyes opened.
"What people?"
"From a transport company."
Daniel's hand fell from his father's shoulder.
"You aren't going anywhere."
Arthur looked at him.
"I wasn't planning to."
We returned to the hall together.
Vanessa was waiting beside the console, the same place where she had examined the mark on her cheek. She had changed into a blue sweater. The torn blouse was gone.
"There you are, Daddy," she said. "These people are going to help us."
The woman with the clipboard smiled professionally.
"Mr. Bennett? My name is Marcy. We've been asked to provide transportation to a private assessment center."
"By whom?" Arthur asked.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"We discussed this."
"No. You discussed it with my son."
Marcy glanced down at the clipboard.
"Your daughter said the family had agreed."
"I haven't," Arthur said.
The man beside her looked at Vanessa.
A small silence opened.
Daniel moved into it.
"My father isn't consenting to leave."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You said he needed an assessment."
"I said that before I knew what happened."
Her eyes flicked toward me.
It was so quick that I might have missed it on another morning.
"What has Claire told you?"
"The truth."
Vanessa gave a short laugh.
"You can't possibly know that."
Daniel didn't answer immediately. I could see him struggling with the distance between the sister he had comforted and the woman on my phone.
She saw it too.
Her voice softened.
"Danny, come into the living room. We can talk privately."
She reached for his sleeve.
He stepped out of reach.
Her hand remained suspended between them for a second before she lowered it.
"My father wants to know who arranged this," he said.
"Richard helped me find the center. He's concerned too."
"Then he can explain that concern to Dad."
Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Marcy shifted the clipboard to her other hand.
"We don't need to be part of a family disagreement. If Mr. Bennett doesn't wish to travel voluntarily, we can leave while you clarify the arrangements."
Relief loosened something in my chest.
Then Vanessa opened her folder.
"I have documents."
She pulled out several pages and held them against the console.
"Dad signed an authorization last month. Daniel witnessed it."
Arthur took one step forward.
"I signed no such thing."
Vanessa looked at Marcy instead of him.
"This is what I've been trying to explain. He doesn't remember."
I watched the transport woman's expression grow guarded.
"I'll need our office to review whatever you've brought," she said.
"That's fine," Vanessa replied. "While you do, we can help him into the van."
"No," Daniel said.
The word struck the hall harder than any shout.
Vanessa turned toward him.
"You're embarrassing me."
He looked at her reddened cheek. I watched him make himself keep looking.
"Give me the document."
She held it closer to her body.
"You already saw it."
"Then showing me again shouldn't be difficult."
Arthur extended his uninjured hand.
"My son asked you for a page bearing my name. Let him read it."
The man by the door folded his arms and looked away. Vanessa noticed.
She handed Daniel the papers.
He scanned the first sheet, then the second. His breathing changed.
"That's my signature."
Vanessa relaxed.
"Yes. It is."
"I didn't witness Dad sign this."
"You must have forgotten."
He raised his head.
"Don't say that to me."
Her expression hardened.
I stood beside him so I could see the page.
Daniel's name appeared at the bottom. Above it, Arthur's signature followed a paragraph appointing Vanessa to act on financial matters. A separate cover sheet referred to concerns about his ability to manage his affairs.
I couldn't tell what legal effect any of it had. I could tell the combination had been designed to look convincing at a glance.
"When did you sign?" I asked Daniel.
He stared at the date.
"The anniversary dinner."
Margaret's birthday dinner, three weeks earlier. Vanessa had brought a stack of company papers after dessert. Daniel had been answering an urgent call from a supplier while she pointed out signature tabs.
I remembered because I had asked him to put the phone away.
He hadn't.
"You told me those were acknowledgments for the annual accounts," he said.
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"You should read what you sign."
His fingers tightened around the page.
Arthur reached for the edge of the console.
I moved beside him, afraid his knees would give out.
He wasn't looking at his own signature anymore.
He was looking at Daniel's.
"You didn't ask me," he said quietly.
Daniel swallowed.
"I thought they were routine."
"You didn't ask me," Arthur repeated.
The transport woman took out her phone and walked toward the front door to call her office.
Vanessa watched her go, then reached for the papers.
Daniel pulled them back.
"You aren't taking these."
"They're mine."
"They have my name on them."
"And mine," Arthur said.
For the first time, her confidence faltered visibly.
I took photographs while Daniel held each page steady. Vanessa ordered me to stop. Nobody moved to help her.
On the last page, Arthur asked Daniel to lift it closer.
"My reading glasses are in the study drawer," he told me.
I retrieved them. His hand shook as he unfolded the arms, but he put them on without help.
Then he read the witness declaration beneath his copied signature.
"Arthur?" I asked.
His eyes remained on the line.
"Richard told me he had no idea what papers she was asking me to sign."
Daniel turned the sheet.
A second name appeared beside the certification.
Richard Hale.
Arthur looked toward his daughter.
"He didn't just arrange the van," he said. "He put his own name on this."
