"My Daughter Exposed the Billionaire’s Fake Fiancée" Chapter 9
The Chair He Lost
Arthur arrived twelve minutes late, as though making people wait could restore the balance of the room.
He paused when he saw me seated beside Vincent.
"Is the staff attending now?"
My hands were cold beneath the table. I kept them still.
Vincent did not answer for me.
"I was invited," I said. "You were expected at ten."
Daniel lowered his eyes to hide a smile.
The room looked almost exactly as it had on the morning Lily walked in. The same polished table. The same leather folders. Rain threatening beyond the windows.
But the chair beside Arthur was empty.
Sophia waited in another room with her lawyer. Lily was at preschool, where her largest concern that morning had been whether worms had birthdays.
She had opened this door for us. She did not need to stand in it again.
Arthur sat opposite Vincent.
"I assume we can finally discuss a sensible resolution."
"We can discuss the facts," Vincent said.
The outside lawyer began with the forged authorization. She showed the original Christmas card, the examiner's findings, and the records establishing that Daniel had neither approved nor received the alleged payment.
Arthur glanced at Daniel.
"I forwarded a document supplied to me. I never claimed expertise in handwriting."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Your email said you had witnessed me sign it."
The lawyer placed the printed email in front of him.
For the first time, Arthur did not reach for the document.
"A mistaken recollection," he said.
Vincent watched him.
"Then let's move to the accounts."
The accountant took them through the transfers from Alessandra Moretti's company. No charts with arrows covering the walls. Only dates, authorizations, and money that had left an employee fund and ended up supporting Bellini obligations.
Arthur's own instructions connected the transfers.
The original papers from Vincent's mother's room established what the assets had been intended to do. Later reports claimed investments that could not be matched to the actual transactions.
Arthur leaned back.
"Your father understood how those funds were being used."
"Then show us his approval," Vincent said.
"We discussed many things privately."
"You had years to record them. You recorded everything else."
A flush spread above Arthur's collar.
"You are allowing an accountant to interpret family business without context."
"Then provide the context."
He looked at me again.
"This began when that woman put a child in the room. Now suddenly we are reopening matters your father considered settled."
I felt Vincent's hand move beneath the table. He rested it near mine, leaving the choice to me.
I took it.
"My daughter found a paper," I said. "You forged several. That is why we are here."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"Be careful."
"She doesn't need your advice," Vincent said.
The lawyer continued before Arthur could answer. She presented the altered deposit slip and a still from the café's exterior camera. It showed Arthur offering the envelope, then taking it away with him when I went inside.

The cropped photograph had omitted the most important part.
"The account belongs to a company associated with your office," she said. "Not Elena."
Arthur adjusted his cuff.
"She approached me."
"The footage shows you waiting for seventeen minutes before she arrived."
He said nothing.
Then the door opened.
Sophia entered with her lawyer.
Arthur stood immediately.
"You should not be here."
His voice was the same one he had used with Lily. Calm on top, something ugly beneath it.
Sophia stopped beside the empty chair.
"I'm going to sit down."
"We discussed this."
"You told me what to do. That isn't the same."
She sat.
Her hands shook as she placed her phone and a folder on the table.
I did not pity her enough to forget the nursery. But I understood what it cost her to stay in that chair.
She described the negative test. The fabricated confirmation. The plan to announce a loss after the investment closed.
Arthur interrupted twice.
The second time, Vincent stood.
He did not lean across the table or strike it. He simply rose, and the room seemed to contract around him.
"You will let her finish."
Arthur looked up at him.
"I have known you since you were a boy."
"Then you had every reason to know what this would do to me."
Sophia looked down at her folder.
"He told me the old accounts had to be accepted without another review," she said. "He said once we were family, Vincent wouldn't embarrass us by looking backward."
She pushed the emails toward the lawyer.
"I knew about the pregnancy lie. I didn't understand the transfers until this week. That doesn't excuse what I agreed to."
Arthur turned on her.
"You ungrateful little fool. Everything I did was to protect your future."
Sophia flinched but did not leave.
"You put my name on a future I would have spent lying about."
He stared at her, breathing hard.
Then he looked at Vincent.
"Your father would never have allowed employees and outsiders to humiliate this family."
Vincent's expression changed at the mention of his father. I felt his grip tighten once before it relaxed.
"My father isn't sitting in this chair."
He opened the folder in front of him.
"The investment agreement is withdrawn. Our representatives are ending the commercial arrangements they have identified for termination. Your access to the foundation, the family records, and this property is revoked. The findings concerning the transfers, the false records, and your conduct toward Elena are being referred for formal action."
Arthur gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
"You think you can walk away from decades of partnership?"
"I think you relied on my being too ashamed to admit what you did."
The laugh died.
"We can settle this privately," Arthur said.
For the first time, he sounded old.
Vincent remained standing.
"You offered Elena an envelope because you thought she couldn't afford to refuse you. You offered me a child because you knew I wanted one. You don't get another offer."
Marco opened the door.
Arthur looked around the table for an ally.
Daniel watched him without expression. The lawyers waited. Sophia would not meet his eyes.
Finally he picked up his briefcase.
At the door, he turned toward me.
"You must be very pleased with yourself."
My heart beat so hard I could feel it in my throat.
"I'm pleased my daughter didn't learn to stay quiet just because a man like you told her to."
Marco stepped between us.
Arthur left without another word.
The latch clicked softly behind him.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel exhaled and rubbed both hands over his face.
Sophia sat very straight, looking at the place where her father had been.
Vincent returned to his chair.
The lawyers began discussing next steps, but he asked for a moment. His voice had lost its steel.
"Elena."
I turned.
He looked at our hands, still joined beneath the table.
"Can we go and collect Lily?"
