"My Daughter Exposed the Billionaire’s Fake Fiancée" Chapter 8
The Letters She Left
Daniel brought the original Christmas card on Tuesday.
He laid it beside the forged authorization and looked at his brother.
"Apparently my festive greetings are worth three million dollars."
The signatures matched, including a tiny break where his pen had skipped on the old card.
The document specialist had already identified the copied image. Now we could see where it had come from.
Vincent studied both pages.
"Arthur kept these?"
"His office archived correspondence from family partners. Sophia gave the examiner access to the folder he used."
Daniel sat down heavily.
The joke had cost him more than he wanted to show.
I was near the study doorway with Mrs. Russo. She had asked me to stay after Lily went to preschool, and Vincent had agreed. They wanted someone in the room who had not spent a lifetime mistaking Bellini manners for loyalty.
"The accountant has traced the payment Reed actually received," Vincent said. "It wasn't three million. That number came from a different transfer. The authorization was assembled to make Daniel look responsible for both."
"Both?" I asked.
He turned a page toward us.
"Money withdrawn from my mother's company. It was supposed to support an employee fund. Arthur described it as an investment advance to Bellini interests. There is no record of repayment."
Mrs. Russo gripped the back of a chair.
"She asked me to remember that fund."
Vincent looked up.
"What do you mean?"
"Your mother left letters. Your father kept them with her papers, but after he died, the room stayed closed. I told myself there would be a better time to ask you to open them."
Her voice broke.
"Then years went by, and it became harder to admit I had waited."
Vincent's expression changed. Not anger, exactly. Something that hurt to watch.
"You should have told us."
"I know."
He stood.
"Show me now."
His mother's room faced the garden. I had cleaned the corridor outside it for months without knowing what lay behind the locked door.
It held a faded armchair, shelves of books, and photographs that made the Moretti brothers look like boys who had once been allowed to be foolish.
Daniel picked up one of them.
"He made me stand in the lake because I called his boat ugly."
Vincent looked over his shoulder.
"You put a hole in it."
"It was still ugly."
Mrs. Russo opened a shallow drawer in the walnut desk. Beneath a bundle of household receipts was a wooden box.
There was no secret mechanism. No elaborate puzzle. Only something precious kept quietly enough that everyone had stopped asking about it.
Vincent took out the letters.
One was addressed to each son. A third was labeled EMPLOYEE FUND.
He opened that one first.
His mother had written plainly about the money she had set aside. She wanted it used for staff emergencies, education, and retirement support. Attached was a list of the assets she had placed in the company.

Arthur's name appeared in later administrative papers, beside authority granted by Vincent's father after her death.
Daniel read over his shoulder.
"She wanted annual reports sent to both of us."
"We never received them," Vincent said.
Mrs. Russo shook her head slowly.
"Your father said Arthur was taking care of everything. He said the paperwork would only upset you."
I saw Vincent understand the shape of it.
Arthur had not needed a hidden identity or a grand conspiracy. He had needed a grieving husband who trusted him and two sons taught not to question the arrangements made above their heads.
The accountant could compare the original asset list with the records Arthur had supplied. What had looked like isolated discrepancies now had a beginning and a purpose.
Vincent called him and arranged for the papers to be collected and documented.
Then he picked up the letter with his name on it.
"Would you like us to leave?" I asked.
He shook his head.
He read silently. Halfway down, his jaw tightened.
Daniel opened his own letter near the window.
For a while, the only sound was the paper in their hands.
Then Vincent looked at his brother.
"She said I wasn't responsible for making your life happen correctly."
Daniel laughed once, shakily.
"Mine says I should stop making you prove you love me by rescuing me."
Vincent looked down at the page again.
"I should have called you before I let you walk into that study with the authorization."
"You were looking at a forged signature."
"You were looking at your brother."
Daniel's face changed.
He crossed the room, and Vincent met him halfway. The embrace was brief and awkward and more moving than either would have wanted me to see.
Mrs. Russo cried openly into a handkerchief.
I looked at the books until I could trust my own eyes.
Later, Vincent found me downstairs by the garden doors.
"She asked whether I was happy," he said.
I turned.
He held his mother's letter loosely at his side.
"She wrote it when I was twenty-three. Told me I didn't have to turn into my father to keep what he built."
"Do you think you did?"
"For a while, I thought being necessary was the same as being loved."
I took his free hand.
"Lily doesn't need a billionaire to put a straw in her juice. She asks you because she wants you there."
He looked down at our joined hands.
"And you?"
I had spent so long protecting myself that the answer felt like stepping off something high.
"I love you," I said.
His fingers tightened around mine.
"Elena."
"You don't have to say it because—"
He kissed me before I could retreat into explanations.
When he lifted his head, his eyes were bright.
"I love you. I was trying to find a moment that didn't involve accountants."
I laughed against his chest.
His phone vibrated. He looked at the screen and made a face.
"Please tell me it isn't the accountant," I said.
"It's Sophia."
He answered. I stayed beside him while he listened.
When he lowered the phone, the warmth in his expression had become resolve.
"She has agreed to speak at the meeting on Thursday. Her father doesn't know."
I looked toward the corridor leading to the conference room.
"The same room?"
"The same table."
