"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 9
THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO WAIT
On the fourth day, Lorenzo asked to see her.
The message said there was a security update and that she could choose the time. Sarah read it twice before answering.
He arrived late in the afternoon without flowers.
She was privately grateful. She would not have known where to put a bouquet among the things that still hurt.
Toby went to study in the next room. Bruno remained outside. Lorenzo sat across from Sarah with a slim folder on his knees.
"The gathering has been canceled," he said.
Her hands tightened in her lap.
"Because of me?"
"Because I put your names into a situation without discussing it with you. I needed to correct that."
He did not seem to expect thanks.
Some of Matteo's files had been confirmed against independent records. An authorization linked to Vincent's team matched the access used by the false server. Other material, still being checked, connected his uncle with the payments and his brother's death.
"Are you certain?" she asked.
Lorenzo looked down at the closed folder.
"Certain enough to keep my son away from him. And to put what we know in the hands of people who can act outside this house."
"Have you told Leo?"
"I said Uncle Vincent wouldn't be visiting for a while. He asked if we'd had a fight. I said yes, about something serious."
Sarah nodded. It was not everything, but it was an honest answer for a six-year-old.
Lorenzo set the folder on the table.
"I've also changed how I'm meeting him. There won't be any information about you or the kids. I'll talk about myself and the files he thinks I can still bury."
"You're putting yourself in our place."
"I was part of this long before you were. I'm not going to pretend that's a new sacrifice."
She studied his face. Several sleepless nights showed there. Even so, his calm felt different from the kind he used to end arguments.
"I came to apologize," he continued. "Not because you overheard the conversation. Because I thought I could wait to tell you."
Sarah lowered her gaze.
"I would have gone to the other house. If you'd explained, I would have understood."
"I know. You had just asked me for the truth, and I made you find it on your own."
He exhaled slowly.
"I shouldn't have brought you my mother's ring for a lie, either. I saw how you looked at the box. I pretended not to understand because it was easier to keep going."
Sarah had not expected that. The knot in her throat loosened painfully.
"I wanted it to be different," she admitted.
"So did I. Wanting it now doesn't repair what I did."
She was quiet for a while. He let her be.
When he stood to leave, he asked whether he could bring Leo on Saturday. Sarah agreed. Lorenzo smiled faintly without turning her answer into a reconciliation they had not yet reached.

At the door, she called him back.
"Are you eating?"
He glanced over his shoulder.
"Did Rosa tell you to ask?"
"She said you're being difficult. That's usually hunger."
For an instant, his smile appeared in full.
"I'll have dinner."
Sarah watched him get into the car and realized she still wanted him to return. The difference was that she could want it without swallowing her hurt.
Saturday brought Leo, two boxes of building blocks, and a folded sheet of paper.
The drawing showed the same people from the hospital, now sitting at a breakfast table. Toby had been added, holding an enormous basketball.
"He said he plays," Leo explained.
"He says a lot of things," Sarah replied.
They spent the afternoon in the sitting room. Lorenzo let his son explain every rule of the spaceship, including the ones that changed whenever he lost. Toby protested, pretended to be defeated, and earned a commander's rank.
Sarah was watching the three of them when her phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared, followed by a voice recording.
It was Vincent.
He said he was sorry she had been sent away from the house. He thought she could help prevent a tragedy. Lorenzo was distressed, making impulsive decisions, surrounded by men who did not understand him.
He wanted a private conversation.
Sarah felt the cold she remembered from the hospital.
Vincent knew she was gone. He knew about the tension between them, or guessed. He was trying to fit himself into the fracture.
She did not answer.
She waited until Leo took Toby into the garden, then called Lorenzo over. She handed him the phone without hiding her trembling fingers.
He listened to the entire recording.
A vein stood out at his temple. Sarah saw the effort it took not to snatch the phone and start issuing orders.
"Has he contacted you before?" he asked.
"No. I want you to know everything. Even when I'm angry with you."
Lorenzo looked up.
"Thank you for showing me."
Bruno received a copy. The security team assessed the contact. Sarah heard what she needed to know without being pushed into details she did not understand.
Lorenzo explained that Vincent still believed he would seek a private family agreement rather than expose the files. He intended to let his uncle believe that long enough to attend a meeting already being coordinated with investigators.
"He's using you to find out whether I'm alone," Lorenzo concluded.
"I won't talk to him secretly. But you can tell him I saw the message and showed it to you. That isn't a lie."
He considered that, then agreed to discuss the response with the people handling the case.
That evening, Vincent accepted a meeting at a family administrative building with controlled access. They would discuss the documents and his departure from the business.
Sarah heard the update over the phone. Lorenzo told her the time, who was responsible for security, and where she, Toby, and Leo could stay.
"Do you want me back at the main house?" she asked.
"I want you somewhere you feel comfortable. I'm asking what you prefer."
She closed her eyes.
It was a small change in wording. It was not small to her.
"I'll stay here. Leo can stay, too, if you think that's best and explain it to him."
Lorenzo was silent for several seconds.
"I'll explain."
Before she hung up, Sarah heard a chair scrape.
"You need to promise you won't decide to die just because you feel guilty," she said.
"I want to come back to my son."
She tightened her grip on the phone.
"And I want to be here when you come back."
This time, the silence between them held nothing empty.
