"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 7
THE KISS THEY HADN'T AGREED ON
"Who was at that dinner?" Sarah asked.
Lorenzo answered without looking away from the screen.
"Too many people to accuse someone on this alone. Too few to sleep comfortably."
Bruno explained that the files would be preserved and examined, including by people outside the family. Lorenzo wanted dates checked and the records compared with other events before he confronted anyone.
Sarah asked for one thing.
"Don't discuss this around Leo. He only wanted to hear his uncle."
Lorenzo switched off the screen.
"He isn't losing that toy again."
During the following week, the house grew quieter. The staff maintained their routine, but Sarah noticed different cars, changing guards, and conversations that stopped when someone entered.
Lorenzo began leaving before breakfast. He returned late, asked Rosa about Sarah's medication, and spent time with his son. With Sarah herself, he never stayed long.
She told herself that was better.
Then she caught herself rereading a message from him that only said the driver was available for her appointment.
Her physical therapist celebrated the first time she lifted her arm a little higher. Sarah wanted to tell Lorenzo. At his office, she found the door shut and heard an angry voice on the other side.
She did not knock.
At dinner, Leo asked why his father was not coming. Sarah said he was working, irritated with herself for how much the question bothered her.
Toby waited until the child left.
"You don't have to like everything here just because you like him."
She put down her fork.
"I never said I liked him."
"I never said you said it."
Sarah threatened to throw her napkin. She did not because the movement would have hurt. Toby collected their plates and kissed the top of her head before leaving.
That small kindness gave her the courage to stop waiting.
At ten thirty, she knocked on the office door.
Lorenzo opened it himself. His tie was loose. A closed folder lay on the desk beside an untouched glass of water.
"Has something happened?"
"Yes. You're avoiding me."
He glanced down the hallway, then stepped aside.
Sarah walked to the armchair without help and noticed him watching every step.
"You're moving better."
"I would have told you if I'd seen you."
He accepted the criticism and sat on the edge of his desk, keeping his distance.
"There's a lot happening."
"I know. I'm living in the middle of it. You talk to Leo, Rosa, my brother. You send me messages through the driver."
Lorenzo opened his mouth, but she continued before her courage deserted her.
"If you think I'm confused because of the ring, say so. I'd rather be embarrassed once than spend a week guessing."
His expression changed.
"Is that what you think?"
"I don't know what to think. You stayed with me that night. Then you acted like you regretted it."

He stood, but did not immediately approach.
"I went back to my room that morning and found dried blood beneath a fingernail. I thought I'd cleaned it all off at the hospital. I stood at the sink thinking you could have died before I even knew your name."
Sarah looked at his hands.
"Every time I see you trying to reach a cup, I remember where those injuries came from. And when you laugh with my son, I start wanting things I have no right to ask for while you depend on this house."
Her heart beat hard beneath the smaller dressing.
"What things?"
He breathed out slowly.
"For you to look for me when you aren't frightened. For you to wait for me at dinner. For you to take off that ring because I lied about it, and someday accept another one knowing what I'm asking."
Sarah had to lower her eyes.
She wanted a clever answer. She wanted to hide what his words had done to her. Nothing came that did not feel cowardly.
"I do wait for you at dinner," she admitted.
Lorenzo went very still.
"It isn't because of Leo. I love spending time with him, but your son isn't the reason I've been watching the door all week."
He approached and stopped in front of her chair.
Sarah tilted her face upward. She saw the scar through his eyebrow, the exhaustion, the mouth she had imagined without admitting it even to herself.
"If you're going to kiss me, don't make it feel like another favor," she said.
He touched her cheek with the backs of his fingers.
"There is nothing generous about what I want to do right now."
She caught his shirt and pulled him the small remaining distance.
The kiss began carefully, almost a question. Sarah answered by lifting her face. His hand found the back of her neck, warm and firm. Stubble brushed her skin. She forgot the chair, the hallway, the folder on the desk.
Then she moved too quickly, and her side pulled.
Lorenzo drew back at once.
"Did I hurt you?"
"The chair hurt my dignity. The rest was good."
He rested his forehead against hers and laughed, a low sound she felt against her mouth.
They stayed that way until she caught her breath.
Later, he walked her to her room. At the door, he kissed her left hand above the ring. Sarah caught his collar and kissed him again, simply to make sure he did not get the final choice.
She slept better than she expected.
The next morning, a message invited her to breakfast in the garden. Leo arrived before his father and spent half the meal describing an insect he wanted to adopt.
Lorenzo came with his phone in his pocket and stayed.
For two days, Sarah allowed herself a cautious happiness. He visited without an excuse, stole fruit from her plate, and accepted Toby's teasing with a patience that entertained all three of them.
Then a conversation in the hallway changed everything.
Sarah was returning from her exercises when she heard Bruno mention the following week's gathering.
"The list already includes Mrs. Caruso and the boy. Vincent received the confirmation."
Lorenzo answered too quietly for her to hear.
Sarah appeared in the doorway before she could change her mind.
"What gathering?"
Both men turned.
She recognized that silence. It was the pause in which people decided how much truth she could tolerate.
She looked at Lorenzo.
"What list has my name on it?"
