"I Took Three Bullets for the Mafia Boss’s Son. He Called Me His Wife." Chapter 1
THE GUN WASN'T POINTED AT HIM
The man in the white service jacket drew a gun, and Sarah knew no one else would reach the boy in time.
Leo Caruso was kneeling beside his chair, searching for a colored pencil. His father stood with his back turned. The men paid to protect them were watching the ballroom doors.
Sarah let go of the water pitcher.
Glass exploded across the marble. Several guests turned, offended, as though a stain on an expensive shoe were the worst thing that could happen tonight.
Then the stranger raised the pistol.
The barrel passed Lorenzo Caruso and settled on his six-year-old son.
Twenty minutes earlier, that same little boy had asked Sarah whether something could still be good after it broke.
She had found him beneath the dessert table, hiding from the photographers with a battered red-and-blue robot. One sleeve of his small suit was rolled crookedly. Chocolate had dried at the corner of his mouth.
"Are you hiding from somebody?" she had asked, crouching beside him.
"I'm waiting for the people to leave."
Sarah recognized his expression. Her brother wore it at school events when everyone else arrived with their parents and he had to search the crowd for his sister.
"That might take a while. There's still a lot of cake."
The boy looked down at the toy.
"His arm came off."
She found the missing piece under a chair and pressed the joint into place. He watched her fingers intently.
"Did you really fix him?"
"Try it. Just don't ask him to carry the piano."
He laughed softly. Sarah offered a napkin, then asked whether he wanted help with the chocolate on his face. He nodded.
"My uncle said he was tough. I thought I ruined him."
"Sometimes things just need a little help."
The smile disappeared when a shadow fell across them.
"Leonardo, I told you to stay close."
Sarah looked up. She knew the man from the news, though no photograph captured quite what he did to a room. His dark suit fit his broad shoulders perfectly. A small scar cut through one eyebrow. His gaze went to her hands before it moved to his son.
"His toy broke," she explained.
"You should have asked someone to help you," he told the boy.
Leo gathered the robot against his chest.
"I was right here, Dad."
Lorenzo thanked Sarah with a brief nod and led his son back to the table. His hand on the small shoulder was protective. Even so, Sarah saw the child shrink beneath it.
She returned to work because her supervisor was already looking for her, and losing another shift was a luxury she could not afford.
That morning, Toby had texted about the pharmacy. There was a problem with the refill, and the supply at home would not last through the weekend. She had promised to make the calls before Friday.

Their rent was late. Bus money waited in a chipped mug beside the microwave. At twenty-four, Sarah measured her life in things that could not be allowed to go wrong.
Then she noticed a server she did not recognize.
He stood near the service entrance, adjusting a silver pin on his lapel: a serpent coiled around a blade. When he caught her looking, his fingers covered it.
"Stop staring at the guests, Miller," her supervisor said.
"He isn't a guest. Who hired that server?"
"Probably extra help from the agency. Watch your tables."
But the agency staff had checked in at six. Sarah had helped one of the women pin up her hair. She knew who had a bad knee, who kept peppermints in his pocket, who needed to catch the last train.
That man carried no tray. He was not looking at the tables. His right elbow stayed tight against his ribs.
Now he had a pistol in his hand.
Sarah tried to shout, but the first word caught in her throat. She kicked off her shoes and ran.
The first bullet struck her shoulder as she threw herself toward Leo.
It felt like being hit with something hot and impossibly heavy. She wrapped her good arm around his head and fell sideways, covering his body with hers. The second impact slammed into her side. The third burned through her thigh.
The boy screamed against her chest.
Chairs crashed. A plate shattered beside her face. More sharp reports sounded somewhere behind them, followed by feet running in several directions.
"Keep your head down," she said, or thought she said.
Leo was trying to pull his jacket out from under her.
"My dad is still there."
"He'll find you. Stay with me."
The marble was cold against her cheek. She tried to move her left arm and could not. Only then did she see the red spreading across her white shirt.
For one terrible second, anger cut through the pain. Not at the child. At herself, for leaving Toby alone in an apartment with a burned-out kitchen light.
He did not know where she kept their parents' paperwork.
She had been meaning to show him.
A large hand touched her face.
"Look at me."
Lorenzo Caruso knelt in the broken glass. There was blood on his cuffs, though Sarah could not tell whether it belonged to him.
"Is my son under you?"
She tried to move. Pain tore through her so fiercely that she lost her breath.
"Don't pull her!" Leo cried.
Lorenzo ran his hands over the boy's chest, face, and hair in a frantic, clumsy search. When he realized his son was unhurt, he closed his eyes for a fraction of a second.
Then he looked at Sarah.
"An ambulance is coming. What's your name?"
"Sarah Miller. My brother—"
She stopped to drag air into her lungs.
"My brother needs to know where I am."

"We'll tell him."
"Don't tell him I'm dead."
Something changed in Lorenzo's face. It frightened her more than the blood.
"You're going to tell him yourself."
A security man crouched on her other side and pressed folded cloth against the wound near her waist. Sarah made a sound she did not recognize as her own.
Leo began crying harder.
"She was fixing my robot, Dad. She didn't do anything wrong."
Lorenzo cupped the back of his son's head and drew him against his chest.
"I know. Look at Bruno. Go with him."
"I want to stay with her."
Sarah found the small hand with the fingers of her right one.
"You helped me by staying still. Now you need to help your dad."
The boy let the guard lift him away, sobbing. Without his weight against her, Sarah felt suddenly, horribly cold.
Near an overturned chair, something silver caught the light. The pin had come loose during the attacker's escape.
"The snake," she whispered. "He was wearing that."
Lorenzo followed her gaze.
His hand went still around hers.
Someone brought a jacket to cover her. Another man spoke urgently into a phone. Sarah heard fragments about police, blocked exits, a car waiting by the service alley.
Lorenzo did not appear to hear any of it. He was staring at the serpent.
"Do you know it?" she asked.
He bent closer, shielding her from the guests gathering behind his men.
"Yes."
"Then why did he want to hurt your little boy?"
For the first time, that powerful man seemed unable to find an answer he could bear to say aloud.
The sirens reached them before he did.
Sarah tightened her fingers around his when the paramedics approached. She did not want to hold on to him, exactly. She wanted to hold on to something that was not slipping away.
He stayed while they cut her shirt open.
As the stretcher began to move, she heard his voice, low enough to almost disappear beneath the chaos.
"Find out who let that serpent through my doors."
