"I Owned the Hotel That Turned My Daughter Away" Chapter 3
Nine Years Beside Me
"You know where he is."
Marisol did not answer quickly enough to pretend otherwise.
I put my hands flat on the table.
"Sarah searched for her brother. She told me she hadn't heard from him in years. If he's alive, I need to know that."
"He is alive."
Relief came first. It surprised me with its force. Sarah had once gone quiet at a restaurant because a man at another table laughed like Noah. I remembered asking whether she wanted to call him, and the way she had turned her wedding ring instead of answering.
Then another thought arrived.
"Does he know she died?"
"Yes."
"And he didn't come?"
Marisol looked exhausted. "He should answer these questions. I'm not trying to punish you by making you wait. I don't want to tell his story badly."
"You don't have to tell his story. Give me a number."
She reached for her phone. Before she could unlock it, mine vibrated beside the plate.
Daniel's name lit the screen.
"I've located the reservation note," he said when I answered. "There is an instruction attached to your arrival."
I looked at Marisol. She had gone still.
"Read it to me."
"Please notify Marisol Alvarez in housekeeping when Mr. Vance arrives. Private family matter. Do not announce an owner visit."
"Who entered it?"
"Peter Lang. He says Thomas contacted him last week about Sarah's letter."
Peter was our front office director. Nine years earlier he had started on nights, dealing with leaking pipes and guests whose keys stopped working. Sarah had promoted him into operations. Eventually he had moved to Chicago to help open this hotel.
I had trusted him with angry wedding parties, broken elevators, and my company credit card. He was not a man who meddled.
"Did he tell the desk to refuse my booking?"
"He says no. The note doesn't say that either. But Claire claims she interpreted it as a reason not to contact management."
"And not to check the allocation?"
"That isn't in the instructions."
I closed my eyes briefly.
"Where is Peter now?"
"In my office. He came back when I called him. He says he needs to speak to you."
"Send him upstairs in fifteen minutes."
I ended the call.
Marisol put her phone on the table without using it.
"Peter knows Noah," I said.
She looked down at the photograph.
I stood too quickly. The chair leg caught the rug, and the small ugly sound made me angrier than it should have.
"How many people knew about this letter?"
"Thomas knew. Peter knew it existed. Daniel kept it sealed. I knew Sarah had written it."
"And I was the one carrying flowers through the rain with no idea."
"Nobody arranged for you to be treated that way."
"Somebody arranged something."
My voice had risen. I glanced toward Lily's door and lowered it with effort.

Marisol watched me struggle. "You're entitled to answers. I don't think making you angry was Sarah's intention."
"That doesn't seem to have stopped her."
The words came out crueler than I intended.
Marisol's eyes filled, and I felt ashamed, then resentful that I had been made to feel ashamed of being hurt.
"I'm sorry," I said. "That was unfair to you."
"You can be upset with her. You don't need my permission."
I walked into the bedroom to check Lily. She was asleep on her side, one hand under her cheek. A plate of hotel cookies stood untouched on the dresser. Sarah had always wrapped one for the next morning because Lily claimed breakfast tasted better when it began with something forbidden.
I took a napkin from the tray and folded it around a cookie.
It was easier than going back outside.
For twelve months, the past had been the one place where nothing changed. However terrible the present became, I could return to the life we had actually lived.
Now I was discovering rooms inside that life that Sarah had kept locked.
I did not know whether I wanted the keys.
When Peter knocked, I was standing beside the vase.
He wore his work suit, but his tie was loose. He had brought a battered leather briefcase I recognized from years of meetings.
His gaze went to the photograph, then to the envelope beside it.
"You opened it."
"Daniel gave me a letter with my name on it. Yes, Peter, I opened it."
He accepted the sharpness without looking surprised.
"I should have spoken to you earlier."
"About the note in my reservation?"
"That too."
Marisol rose. "I'll give you some space."
"Please stay," I said.
I did not want to find out later there had been another conversation I had missed.
Peter set his briefcase down but remained standing.
"Thomas called me because his health is getting worse. He was worried the letter would stay in a drawer. He knew Marisol had transferred here. When I saw your booking, I thought I could get you into the same room."
"You could have called me."
"I know that."
"Instead you put a private instruction in a reservation system."
"I thought it would be discreet."
"My daughter was told she couldn't sit in the lobby."
His face changed. "Daniel told me. I am sorry. I didn't tell anyone to refuse you service. I wouldn't have done that to Lily."
It was the use of her name that stopped me.
Peter knew I had a daughter. Everyone did. But he had said it with a familiarity that belonged to someone who had pictured her before tonight.
"What does this have to do with Sarah's brother?"
He looked at Marisol.
She shook her head once, barely.
"Don't ask her to help you avoid it," I said.
He looked back at me.
I saw him swallow. Peter Lang, who could tell a ballroom full of stranded executives that the airport was closed without changing his tone, could not seem to begin a sentence.
"Sarah told me Noah disappeared," I said. "She cried over it. I held her while she cried. If you've known where he was all this time, explain that to me."
Peter pulled out a chair. He did not sit. He held its back with both hands.
"She wasn't lying about losing him. We didn't speak for years."
The word we hung between us.
I looked at his face, really looked at it, stripped of the assumptions nine years had put there.
The way his jaw tightened. The little crease between his eyebrows. An expression I had seen across my breakfast table a thousand times.
He released the chair.
"My name was Noah Hale before I changed it. Sarah was my sister."
I could hear the rain against the windows again.
Peter's voice broke on the next words.
"I'm Lily's uncle, Ethan. I've been her uncle all this time."
