"The Baby Who Remembered Me" Chapter 11
Both of Us
Eight months later, Liana woke to a small hand pushing insistently at her chin.
"Mama."
She kept her eyes closed.
"I don't think she's awake," Matteo whispered.
Noah considered this problem.
Then he climbed farther onto the bed and sat on her stomach.
Liana opened one eye.
"That was a ruthless decision."
Her son laughed, pleased with his success.
Matteo stood beside the bed in an old gray shirt, holding a mug of coffee well out of reach.
"I suggested knocking. He rejected the proposal."
Liana pulled Noah down for a kiss. He tolerated two before trying to escape toward the bedside lamp.
She sat up and caught his ankle.
"You have your own possessions. Stop trying to inherit mine."
Matteo put the coffee down and leaned in to kiss her.
Noah inserted a hand between their faces.
"We're being supervised," Liana said.
"I've noticed."
He kissed her again anyway.
She had moved back into the estate three weeks earlier.
This time, there had been no red uniform in her suitcase. No frantic investigation. No one had carried a sleeping child upstairs while she tried to decide whether accepting a roof meant surrendering her choices.
She and Matteo had spent months learning each other outside the worst thing that had ever happened to them.
Their first dinner had been interrupted twice by calls from Mrs. Bell, neither of them urgent. They had both called her back immediately.
Their second had ended in an argument about whether Matteo's attempt to reserve an entire restaurant counted as a normal evening out.
By the third, he had learned to ask whether she wanted a solution before arranging one.
Liana had learned that silence did not always mean he was angry, and that telling him she needed space worked better than leaving him to guess whether she meant an hour or forever.
There had been nights at her apartment and mornings at his house. One disastrous picnic. A winter cough that frightened them both more than the doctor thought necessary.
And, gradually, a relationship that had ordinary problems as well as extraordinary history.
She liked the ordinary problems.
They made the future feel possible.
In the kitchen, Noah demanded toast by pointing at everybody else's plate.
Mrs. Bell gave him his own piece, already cut safely for him, and told Matteo he had left the terrace door open again.
He apologized without defending himself.
Liana exchanged a look with the housekeeper.
"He's improving," Mrs. Bell said.
"Very slowly," Liana agreed.
Matteo stole a strawberry from her plate.
"I can still hear both of you."
The house had changed.
A wooden train waited beneath the console table in the foyer. The sitting room contained more books than decorative cushions. A small yellow blanket lay over the nursery chair, its crooked corner finally repaired because Noah had pulled the hole almost to the edge.

Liana had kept the loose piece of yarn.
She kept many things now without feeling foolish about it.
The silver star was in a box on her dressing table. Not around Noah's neck, not hanging where curious fingers could reach it. One day she would explain where it had come from. She hadn't decided the words yet.
The records had been corrected. Mercer's medical work had been stopped while the criminal proceedings advanced, and the evidence against him was no longer something Liana had to carry alone. Evelyn had given a full account of her part and accepted that helping afterward did not erase what she had done.
Liana had not forgiven her.
She no longer spent every day deciding whether she should.
That afternoon, they took flowers to the cemetery.
Matteo chose daisies for Elena because she had hated lilies. For Nico, he brought a small bunch of blue flowers and a story about Noah pulling every tissue out of a new box.
Liana sat on the bench while Matteo stood beside the graves.
She did not ask him to hurry.
When Noah grew restless, she walked him along the path, letting him hold one of her fingers in each hand. He had begun taking independent steps but still preferred an audience.
Matteo came toward them with his coat open.
"Was I a long time?"
"We were having a very important discussion about gravel."
Noah pointed down emphatically.
Matteo crouched.
"I agree. There's an unreasonable amount of it."
Noah laughed and attempted to climb him.
Liana watched Matteo lift him, the easy motion earned over hundreds of mornings.
The ache of the place remained. So did the life in front of her.
She could hold both now without feeling she had betrayed either.
Back at the estate, Mrs. Bell announced she was taking Noah for his bath and that nobody was to come upstairs and make him overexcited before bed.
She looked directly at Matteo while saying it.
He raised both hands.
"I understand the allegation."
Liana followed him onto the terrace.
A small table had been set near the doors. Two bowls of pasta, a basket of bread, no hovering staff.
She looked at him.
"Did you cook?"
"I helped."
"How much?"
"I carried the bread."
She laughed and sat down.
They ate while the garden lights came on. Matteo asked about the class she had started twice a week. Liana told him about the woman who kept borrowing her notes and pretending it was a coincidence.
For a while, nothing important happened.
She was still learning how precious that could be.
When the plates were empty, Matteo reached into his jacket.
Liana's breath caught before she saw the box.
He set it on the table without opening it.
"I've been carrying this for twelve days," he said.
"Why twelve?"
"The first day, Noah developed that rash. The second, you had your class. On the third, I realized I was waiting for a day when nothing could frighten either of us."

She looked at the box, then at him.
"That might take a while."
"Yes."
He took her hand.
"I love you. I wanted to say that before I asked you anything."
She smiled, and her eyes filled.
"I love you too."
The relief on his face was so open that she reached for him with her other hand.
"You knew that," she whispered.
"I hoped. I like hearing it."
He opened the box.
The ring was simple, a pale stone set low enough not to catch easily on clothes or scratch a child's cheek. She recognized the thought behind it before she noticed anything else.
"Will you marry me, Liana?"
For a moment she saw him in the foyer, exhausted and suspicious, holding a child he could not soothe.
She saw his hand opening at the gate. His face above a little blue shoe. The badly made tea. The quiet patience of a man who had learned that wanting her beside him meant allowing her to leave.
She had not come to this house looking for love.
She had come because grief did not pay the rent.
What had grown between them was something neither of them could have arranged.
"Yes," she said.
Matteo let out a shaky laugh.
She leaned across the table before he could stand and kissed him, awkwardly, smiling against his mouth.
Upstairs, a small voice shouted for them.
Mrs. Bell appeared at the terrace doors with Noah in his pajamas.
"He heard laughter," she said. "Apparently that's a family event."
Noah spotted them and wriggled until she put him down.
He walked three unsteady steps, stopped to regain his balance, and held out both arms.
For one suspended second, Liana remembered marble beneath her shoes and the terrible courage it had taken to ask a stranger for his child.
Beside her, Matteo was already kneeling.
She knelt too.
Noah looked from one to the other, delighted by the choice.
Then he came toward them.
They caught him together.
