"The Baby Who Remembered Me" Chapter 9
What He Could Not Take
"You need to be very careful about making accusations," Mercer said.
His tone had changed. It was the voice Liana remembered from the hospital, the one that made a question sound like misbehavior.
She kept the phone steady.
"I am being careful. That's why I called the clinic myself."
"Your son has a complicated medical history."
"Then you know why I won't send him to a different hospital in a van I didn't request."
Matteo stood beside her without taking the phone away.
Mercer drew a slow breath.
"There are explanations for the discrepancies you've found. I'd prefer to discuss them privately."
"Nothing about this will be private again," Matteo said.
Rachel, listening from Daniel's phone, advised them not to continue debating over the line. There were formal questions Mercer needed to answer, and investigators were already seeking records from the hospital and transport company.
Mercer ended the call.
An hour later, he appeared at the estate gate in his own car.
He had no coat despite the cold. On the security screen, Liana watched him speak to the guard with the impatient familiarity of someone who expected recognition to be enough.
It wasn't.
Daniel had revoked his access.
Matteo looked at Liana.
"You don't have to see him."
She knew that. For the first time since Noah's death, nobody in a position of authority was telling her she needed to endure something for her own good.
She considered the choice.
Then she looked at Mrs. Bell.
"Will you stay upstairs with him?"
The housekeeper nodded.
Daniel arranged a meeting in the estate's separate security office, near the outer gate. Rachel remained on the line, and the investigators were informed of Mercer's arrival. He was told the conversation would be recorded. He agreed, apparently certain he could talk his way back into the position he had lost.
Liana left Noah with a kiss on his hair.
Matteo did not touch her until they were outside.
Then he offered his hand.
She took it.
In the office, Mercer stood when they entered.
He looked smaller without a hospital behind him.
"Matteo," he said. "We've known each other for fifteen years."
"Then you know I don't enjoy having to ask a question twice. Why did you arrange a transport to St. Catherine's under my son's name?"
"The file hasn't been corrected. That's an administrative issue."
"The appointment was presented to Ms. Graves as a visit to a different clinic," Rachel said through the speaker. "Who authorized that representation?"
Mercer looked at the phone.
"I don't know what the scheduler told her."
"The company has preserved the booking call," Daniel said.
A muscle moved in Mercer's cheek.
Liana sat down because she would not let him see her legs shaking.
"Tell me what happened the night you called me."
He turned toward her with an expression that might once have worked.

"You were exhausted, Ms. Graves. Your recollection of that period may not be reliable."
"I remember what you said. I remember asking why his ear was covered. I remember you telling me I shouldn't disturb him."
Mercer folded his hands.
"A grieving parent can attach extraordinary significance to—"
"There is an independent maternity result," Rachel interrupted. "Please answer the question."
He stopped.
Matteo laid a photograph on the table.
Nico on his chest. Elena's hand at the edge.
"You told me he could come home," he said.
Mercer didn't look at the picture.
"There was a tragic clinical event."
The room became very quiet.
Liana felt Matteo's hand tighten around hers beneath the table.
"Which child?" he asked.
Mercer wet his lips.
"I'm not prepared to discuss confidential information in this setting."
"You were prepared to discuss my supposed mental state with him," Liana said. "You were prepared to send a vehicle for my son."
Mercer looked toward Daniel at the door.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that nobody present was going to help him regain control.
"Evelyn has her own responsibilities to answer for," he said.
"She knows," Rachel replied. "That does not answer the questions about yours."
Mercer leaned toward Matteo.
"I was trying to spare you another loss. You were barely functioning after Elena."
Matteo's face emptied.
"Don't say her name."
"I thought if you had time—"
"Time for what?"
Mercer stopped.
Liana felt her own anger become very clear.
"Time for us to stop remembering their faces?"
He looked at her.
"You don't understand what happens when a hospital loses the confidence of a family like his."
There it was.
Not mercy. Not concern for either child.
Fear of what a powerful man might do when told the truth.
Matteo released Liana's hand and stood.
Daniel moved half a step closer.
For a moment, Liana thought of the newspapers and the things people said Matteo Varric could do to a man who crossed him.
Mercer thought of them too. His chair scraped backward.
Matteo picked up the photograph instead.
"You let me kiss another woman's child goodnight while mine waited for me under her son's name."
His voice was so low Liana had to lean forward to hear it.
"You didn't spare me anything. You made sure I wasn't there for him."
Mercer opened his mouth.
"We're finished," Matteo said.
He turned away before the doctor could answer.
The investigators arrived shortly afterward. The meeting ended in separate conversations, questions about the recorded statements, and instructions to preserve the material already collected. Mercer left with them. His status and the formal process would be determined by what could be established, not by Matteo's anger.
Over the following days, that evidence grew.
An archived medication entry contradicted the rewritten chart. The original dispatch record linked Noah's room to the car sent to the estate. Another staff member gave an account of Mercer directing the changes. Evelyn's copies were compared with the hospital's retained records.
No single necklace solved it. No single confession had to carry it all.
Liana gave her statement with Rachel beside her.
When someone asked why she had accepted the identification at the hospital, she nearly apologized.
Then she remembered the dressing, the assurances, the authority arranged around her grief.
"Because I believed the people who said they had cared for him," she answered.
Afterward, Matteo waited outside with Noah in the stroller.
The baby saw her and began kicking both feet.
She bent and kissed his cheeks until he squealed.
"How was he?" she asked.
"He tried to eat a receipt. I believe we reached a compromise."
Liana laughed, then suddenly couldn't.
Matteo moved closer.
"You don't have to hold it together for the drive home."
She leaned against him with one hand still resting on the stroller.
For once, she let someone else carry the next few minutes.
