"The Baby Who Remembered Me" Chapter 6
The Open Gate
Mercer's first message arrived before breakfast.
Liana was spooning oatmeal into Noah's mouth when Matteo's phone began vibrating on the kitchen counter.
The baby leaned toward the sound. She wiped a smear from his chin, making herself finish the ordinary task before looking up.
Matteo read the screen.
"He knows someone requested the records."
"What does he want?"
"To reassure me that you're experiencing a bereavement-related fixation."
Her fingers tightened around the spoon.
Noah opened his mouth expectantly.
She fed him another bite.
"Is that what he's going to call it?"
Matteo set the phone facedown.
"It doesn't change the laboratory results."
"It changes whether people believe me."
"The people handling this will see the reports."
She wanted to borrow his certainty. Instead, she looked at her son and remembered how a calm professional voice had once persuaded her to stop asking questions.
That afternoon, Daniel reported an unfamiliar car outside her apartment. It left before he could establish who was inside. The discovery might have had an innocent explanation. Nobody wanted to assume that it did.
Matteo doubled the gate detail.
Then he told the driver Liana was not to leave without clearance.
She heard him from the doorway.
"Clearance from whom?"
He turned.
"We're making sure nobody follows you."
"That isn't what you said."
Daniel glanced between them, then quietly stepped out.
Matteo looked tired enough to fall asleep standing up.
"Mercer knows where you live. He knows your financial situation. He may have access to people who will help him. Until we understand that, the estate is the safest place."
"Then ask me to stay here."
"I am asking."
"You told the driver not to take me anywhere."
His jaw tightened.
"I can't protect you if I don't know where you are."
The fear beneath his words was real. She could see it. She could also feel the walls drawing closer.
"Twenty-five days ago, someone else decided I couldn't be trusted with the truth about my child. I won't have every decision taken away from me again."
"That isn't what I'm doing."
"Then let me leave."
They stood facing each other in the corridor.
Behind the nursery door, Noah banged a toy against the floor.
Matteo looked toward the sound.
"Where would you go?"
"To my apartment. I need clothes. I need his things."
"I'll have someone bring them."
"I need to open his bedroom myself."
He stopped.
Something in her face must have reached him, because the argument went out of his shoulders.
"I didn't think about that."
"I know."
She went back to the guest room and packed her small bag. Noah watched from the center of the bed, delighted every time a sleeve disappeared into it.
For one shameful moment, she resented his happiness.
Then he leaned forward with his arms raised, and she picked him up, pressing her mouth to his hair.

"You're allowed to be happy," she whispered. "I'm going to remember how."
Matteo knocked a few minutes later.
He held her coat, her identification, and a set of keys.
"The car is available whenever you want it," he said. "Daniel can accompany you if you agree. He can wait outside your building."
She looked at the keys.
"And if I don't come back tonight?"
He swallowed.
"Tell Mrs. Bell so she doesn't worry."
"You mean tell you."
"Yes. I mean tell me."
That admission reached her more effectively than the orders had.
She took the keys.
Daniel drove her across the city. At her building he helped carry the folded stroller upstairs, checked the apartment with her permission, then left her alone.
Liana stood outside Noah's bedroom for nearly five minutes.
The door stuck in damp weather. She had forgotten that. She pushed harder, and the familiar little scrape across the floor made her cry before she saw anything inside.
The yellow crib.
The laundry basket with one striped sock hanging over the edge.
A book open facedown on the chair, because she had believed she would finish reading it when they came home.
Noah twisted against her, staring.
"Do you remember?" she asked.
He reached for the curtain.
She laughed weakly and moved him away from it.
On the floor, he crawled toward the same low shelf he had always wanted to empty. Within a minute, he had pulled down a cloth book and begun chewing the corner.
Liana sat beside him.
She had imagined returning to this room with him so many times that being there felt less believable than the fantasies had.
Her phone lit up.
Matteo had sent one message.
There are clean boxes in the trunk if you need them. You don't have to decide anything today.
She read it twice.
Then she packed Noah's favorite books, the yellow blanket, his little shoes, and a photograph that showed him grinning at her from the bathtub.
She left the crib where it was.
Before closing the bedroom, she took the little shoes out again. One had a rabbit embroidered on the front. She had bought them too large, imagining a future she was afraid to discuss with anyone.
Now she held one against Noah's foot. It was still a little big.
She sat on the floor and cried, not for the child she had lost this time, but for the mother who had packed those shoes away believing there would never be a reason to use them.
When Daniel knocked softly to ask whether she needed help, she told him she needed five more minutes. He gave her ten without asking again.
At dusk, Daniel asked where she wanted to go.
Liana looked at Noah, asleep with his mouth open.
"Back to the estate."
Matteo was in the kitchen when they arrived.
He stood so quickly his chair scraped the tiles.
Liana held up the cloth book.
"He still wants to eat the corners. I thought you should be warned."
Matteo looked from the book to her overnight bag.
His expression changed slowly, painfully.
"You came back."
"I said I wanted a choice."
He nodded.
Noah woke at the sound of his voice and reached.
For a moment, Matteo did not move.
Then he took him.
