"My Daughter Asked My Billionaire Boss to Be Her Daddy." Chapter 9
What I Chose
He was waiting beyond the barrier with his coat over one arm.
I saw him before he saw me. He stood apart from the other arrivals, still enough to look detached, but his eyes kept searching the crowd.
Then he found me.
The expression on his face did more to unsettle my careful lists than any argument could have.
I walked straight into his arms.
"Hello," he murmured into my hair.
"Hello."
He kissed me without caring who watched. For a moment, I forgot the contract, the city I had just left, the version of myself I thought I was supposed to become.
In the car, he kept hold of my hand until we reached my building.
Mia was asleep at my mother's apartment. Upstairs, the kitchen was clean. A covered plate waited in the refrigerator, with a note explaining that the contents had been purchased from a licensed professional.
I laughed, then sat at the table and cried.
Adrian crouched beside my chair.
"Tell me what happened."
"Nothing happened. That's the problem. The job is good. You are here. Mia is happy. I can't make one of these things wrong so the decision becomes easy."
He rested his hand over mine.
"You don't have to decide tonight."
I leaned forward until my forehead touched his shoulder.
He stayed on the floor beside me, his expensive trousers creasing against my kitchen tiles, until the crying passed.
The next afternoon, Serena called me into her office.
The East Coast division had its final approval. Blackwell's production had accelerated the schedule. The role she had mentioned in the spring was ready.
Executive Creative Director, New York.
I read the responsibilities twice.
More authority. A larger team. Direct involvement in campaigns rather than constant travel between offices. The salary was below Chicago's, but the work fitted parts of me I had almost forgotten to include in the comparison.
"Does Adrian know?" I asked.
"He knows the division was approved. He excluded himself from your selection and compensation. The committee chose you. I recommended you."
She leaned back.
"You still have to want the job, Claire. I am not interested in becoming the convenient ending to a romantic dilemma."
I laughed, grateful enough that it hurt.
I took both contracts home. After collecting Mia, I cooked dinner, helped her read a book about whales, and listened while she explained why Gerald required a younger brother.
At bedtime, she asked whether she could keep her school if we moved. I answered honestly that she couldn't. She went quiet, then asked whether we could visit it. I stroked her hair and promised we would talk about every change before making it. After she slept, I stayed beside her for a while, letting her question join my own without pretending it could answer them all.
When she was asleep, I spread the papers across the table.

For the first time, I compared the days I would actually live instead of the titles I could announce.
At eleven, I called my mother.
"I think I know," I said.
"Then get some sleep. If you still know in the morning, make your calls."
She didn't ask me to prove anything. I loved her for that.
In the morning, I declined Chicago and accepted Serena's offer.
Then I worked until six, because my team still needed a casting decision and two budget approvals. Only afterward did I text Adrian.
Dinner, just us?
We met at the same Italian restaurant. He stood when I arrived, his eyes searching my face.
"You've decided."
I nodded.
"I accepted the New York role."
He went very still.
"Serena told you?"
"Yesterday. It is the work I want. I turned Chicago down this morning."
His fingers tightened around the back of his chair. He looked as though he was restraining a response large enough to frighten both of us.
I put my hand over his.
"You can look happy."
He laughed once, unsteadily. Then he kissed me, his palm against my cheek, in the middle of the narrow restaurant.
The waiter discreetly retreated.
When we sat, Adrian kept my hand between both of his.
"I love you," he said.
The words landed without warning. No practiced smile softened them. He looked entirely exposed.
I had known. I had felt it at the airport and on my kitchen floor. Hearing it still made my chest ache.
"I love you too."
He closed his eyes briefly.
Then he pressed his mouth to my knuckles, and I felt the smile there before I saw it.
That summer, Lily came for six weeks and found a museum placement in Brooklyn. She stayed at Adrian's apartment, criticized his refrigerator, and helped Mia paint stars on Gerald's new cardboard house.
There were still difficult evenings between her and Adrian. Once, she left the table after he answered a call. He went after her, returned ten minutes later, and put the phone in a drawer.
He was learning. She was letting herself notice.
In August, he made a whole plate of round pancakes.
Mia awarded him a certificate in purple crayon.
QUALIFIED DADDY PANCAKE MAKER.
He hung it in his office, beside Lily's photograph and the drawing of the three of us.
In October, Daniel emailed.
I recognized his address before my mind accepted what it meant. For years, I had imagined angry answers to questions he never asked. Now his name made my hands cold.
He had returned to the United States. He wanted to know how Mia was.
I showed Adrian that evening.
His face hardened. He read the message twice, then set my phone down with deliberate care.
"What do you want to do?" he asked.
"I don't know."
He nodded, though I could see what the restraint cost him.
We exchanged emails slowly. Daniel answered hard questions, offered no excuse I found sufficient, and accepted that I would set the pace. I didn't offer forgiveness as a reward for finally replying.
When I told Mia he wanted to meet her, she listened without interrupting.
"Do I have to?"
"You don't."
She asked a few questions. Then she looked toward the living room, where Adrian sat reading.
She walked over, Gerald held tightly against her chest.
"Mr. Kane?"
He set down the book.
"If I meet my other dad," she asked, "will you stop coming on Sundays?"
