"My Daughter Was Eating Beside the Trash" Chapter 8 — The Stepmother's Perfect Lie
Victoria Whitmore appeared on a local morning broadcast wearing pale blue and an expression of practiced heartbreak.
“My husband has decided I'm a villain,” she told the interviewer. “I loved his daughter. I tried to give her structure. Now he's using his money to destroy me.”
Nathan watched the clip on Daniel's laptop without speaking.
The segment showed a photograph of Victoria smiling beside Emma at a charity event. It did not show the child eating beside a trash can.
“She wants you to react,” Daniel said.
“She's lying about my daughter on television.”
“I know. Our response needs to protect Emma's privacy.”
Nathan closed the laptop.
“Then we don't give her a spectacle. We give the investigators evidence.”
By noon, Victoria's interview had circulated through the social circles that once treated her as a queen. Some acquaintances sent supportive messages. Others asked why she had not addressed the photographs Nathan's attorneys had preserved.
Daniel issued a narrow statement: Nathan would not discuss a minor child's private experiences in the media, and the family matters were being handled through appropriate legal channels.
Meanwhile, Detective Carter met with Sarah Mitchell and obtained authenticated school records. Investigators were examining the source of the false email purportedly sent by Nathan.
At Whitmore Development, a forensic accountant identified more unauthorized payments. Richard's business partners began demanding explanations.
Victoria called him six times.
He answered the seventh.
“You went on television?” Richard snapped.
“I had to defend myself.”
“You told them you barely knew Claire. Carter has garage footage.”
Victoria's silence lasted too long.
“How do you know that?” she asked.
“My attorney knows what the police are asking about.”
“Then your attorney should teach you to stop talking.”
Richard's voice shook. “I am not going down alone.”
Victoria ended the call.
That evening, Nathan came home to find Emma in the living room with Margaret and Sarah. They were building a paper village around the cardboard castle.
Emma looked up anxiously.
“Someone at school said Victoria was on TV.”
Nathan sat beside her.
“Adults sometimes say things publicly that aren't true. You don't have to watch it or answer questions about it.”
“Is she coming back?”
“No. We're making sure you are safe, and the lawyers and police are handling the grown-up problems.”
Emma leaned against him. “Can we finish the village?”
“Show me where the bakery goes.”
She pointed to a crooked cardboard building. “Next to the castle. Everybody gets food there.”
Nathan had to look away for a moment.
The fallout from the broadcast was not what Victoria had expected.
One charity quietly removed her name from an upcoming gala. Two friends stopped returning calls. Her attorney forwarded a preservation notice requiring her to retain messages, photographs, and financial records.
She called the charity chairwoman and demanded an explanation.
“We're postponing your appearance while serious allegations are investigated,” the woman said.
“You can't treat me as guilty because Nathan says so.”

“We're not making a criminal finding. We're deciding who represents our organization.”
Victoria hung up hard enough to crack the corner of her phone case.
For the first time, the polished world she had spent years cultivating was beginning to shut its doors.
Nathan's board chair also called. The company had placed the employees implicated in the suspicious transfers on administrative leave pending review.
“People want a statement,” the chair said.
“Tell them we're cooperating with investigators and protecting company records.”
“Richard is claiming you engineered this because of the divorce.”
“Then preserve his message, too.”
The chair paused. “You sound different, Nathan.”
“I used to think I could solve everything by working harder. My daughter needed me to come home.”
He ended the call and returned to the kitchen, where Emma had left a paper crown on his chair.
On it she had written: DAD OF THE CASTLE.
Across town, Richard drove into the underground garage of a private office building. Victoria was waiting beside a concrete column, her heels clicking impatiently.
“Why here?” she demanded.
“Because I don't trust your phone.”
“You shouldn't have called me at all.”
Richard took a step closer. “You told me the garage cameras had been erased.”
“They were supposed to be.”
“You said Claire would hand over the files once we frightened her.”
Victoria's eyes hardened. “Lower your voice.”
“You made me go near the car.”
“I didn't make you do anything.”
“You gave me the keys!”
Victoria looked toward the empty entrance. “Stop shouting.”
Richard had started recording before she arrived. His phone lay in the breast pocket of his coat, microphone unobstructed.
“I did what we agreed,” he said. “And now you're telling your lawyer I acted alone.”
Victoria laughed once, sharply.
“You want sympathy? You were stealing from Nathan's company before I ever touched the accounts.”
“And you wanted Claire gone.”
“She was going to ruin everything.”
Richard stared at her.
“Say it, Victoria. Tell me what we planned.”
Her expression twisted.
“We planned the accident together. Don't you dare put this all on me.”
The words hung in the cold garage air.
Richard felt his pulse hammer against his collar.
Victoria stepped forward, suddenly suspicious.
“Why are you asking me to repeat things you already know?”
He backed away.
“Because you're trying to make me the only criminal.”
Her gaze dropped to his coat pocket.
“Give me your phone.”
“No.”
“Richard.”
He turned and hurried toward the elevator. Victoria followed, her heels striking the concrete like gunshots.
“You think Nathan will protect you?” she shouted. “He'll bury you!”
Richard reached the elevator and jabbed the button. The doors opened just as Victoria grabbed his sleeve.
He pulled free and stepped inside.
“I'm done protecting you,” he said.
The doors closed between them.
Upstairs, Richard sat in his car with both hands trembling on the steering wheel. He played the recording once. Victoria's admission sounded unmistakable.
He called his criminal defense attorney.
“I have something,” Richard said. “Something the police need to hear.”
“Do not send it to anyone else,” the attorney replied. “Preserve the original. We need to discuss how to proceed.”
Richard looked toward the garage exit.
“And if Victoria finds out?”
“Then stop speaking with her. Immediately.”
The next morning, Carter received word that Richard's attorney wanted to arrange a formal meeting.
Nathan was in his office when Daniel called.
“Richard may be ready to cooperate,” Daniel said.
“Why now?”
“Because Victoria has apparently decided to blame him for everything.”
Nathan stood at the window. The skyline glittered in the morning sun.
“Can he prove she was involved?”
“We don't know what he has yet.”
Across the city, Victoria sat alone in her hotel suite, watching her television interview replay without sound.
Her phone lit up with a message from Richard.
I kept a copy.
She read it twice, then called him. No answer.
A second message appeared.
This time I'm telling the truth.
Victoria's face drained of color.
For four years, she had believed that Claire's death was a secret she and Richard could control.
Now the only other person who knew the whole story was preparing to speak.
