"My Daughter Was Eating Beside the Trash" Chapter 6 — The Trust Fund They Tried to Steal
Nathan read the amended trust document three times before he trusted himself to speak.
Victoria's name appeared in a place it had never belonged.
“If anything happens to me, she controls Emma's money?”
“That's what the document attempts,” Daniel said. “It doesn't mean it's valid. The original trust requires specific conditions and signatures. This version raises serious questions.”
“Who filed it?”
“A lawyer whose firm has represented Richard's businesses.”
Nathan stared at the forged-looking signature above his own printed name. It resembled his handwriting, but the final stroke was wrong.
“I never signed that.”
“We'll have it examined. I've notified the trustee and requested a freeze on disputed changes while the matter is reviewed.”
“How much is in the trust?”
“Claire's original assets, insurance proceeds, and the contributions you've made. A little over twelve million dollars.”
Nathan thought of Emma sitting beside the trash can with cold potatoes on a paper plate.
Twelve million dollars, and they had denied her dinner.
“Tell me what they were planning.”
Daniel tapped a second file. “Richard submitted reports claiming Emma had severe behavioral problems. Victoria's notebook entries appear in the supporting material.”
Nathan's stomach turned.
The notes about Emma crying. The staged photographs. The accusations that she was disobedient.
“They weren't just punishing her.”
“They may have intended to use those records to support a future petition about her care or financial management. We can't yet prove the entire plan.”
“They made her suffer so they could steal from her.”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
“We're going to let the evidence establish what they did. And we're going to keep Emma out of their reach.”
Nathan authorized every lawful protective step Daniel recommended. The trustee received a formal challenge. A forensic document examiner was retained. Carter received copies of the disputed filing.
The trust's original terms were straightforward: Emma would receive distributions for education, health, and support through an independent trustee, then control the remaining assets at specified adult ages.
Victoria had no automatic right to administer the funds merely because she was Nathan's wife.
That distinction mattered. Her attempted amendment was not just a grab for money. It was an effort to rewrite Claire's last protection for her daughter.
Nathan asked Daniel to preserve both versions, the transmission logs, and every communication with the trustee.
“Nothing disappears,” he said.
“Nothing,” Daniel promised.
At home, Emma was sitting at the breakfast table, staring at a bowl of cereal.
“Not hungry?” Nathan asked.
She shook her head.
“Would you rather have toast?”
Another shake.
He pulled out the chair beside her, leaving space between them.
“What's wrong, sweetheart?”
“Mrs. Collins said we can have snacks whenever we're hungry.”
“That's right.”
“Even if I didn't finish breakfast?”
“Even then.”
Emma stared at the bowl. “Victoria said if I asked for more food, you'd send me away.”
Nathan slid the cereal aside and put a piece of toast on a small plate.

“You can eat now or later. You don't have to earn food. And I'm not sending you away.”
She picked up the toast with both hands.
He remained beside her until she took a bite.
That afternoon, Sarah Mitchell, Emma's teacher, came to meet Daniel and Detective Carter. Nathan had asked that the conversation take place without Emma present.
Sarah carried a folder of school notes.
“Emma often asked whether she could take leftover fruit home,” she said. “She'd hide crackers in her backpack. When I asked if she was hungry, she said she wasn't allowed to make trouble.”
Nathan stared at the table.
“Why didn't anyone call me?”
“We tried,” Sarah said quietly. “Several times. The contact information Victoria supplied directed calls to her number. She told us Emma was seeing a specialist.”
She slid a printed email across the table.
It purported to be from Nathan, requesting that all school concerns be routed through Victoria.
“I never sent this.”
Carter took a copy. “We'll verify its origin.”
Sarah looked stricken. “I should have insisted on speaking to you.”
“You're speaking now,” Nathan said. “Please tell us everything.”
She described the days Emma arrived without lunch, the occasions she flinched when an adult raised a voice, and the drawing she made of a small girl outside a locked door.
Carter asked careful questions, recording dates and identifying which observations Sarah had witnessed personally.
Afterward, Nathan sat alone in his car for ten minutes.
He had spent years believing a large house, a private school, and a full bank account meant Emma was protected.
She had been asking for scraps.
His phone rang. Richard.
Nathan let it go to voicemail.
A message arrived moments later.
You are destroying this family over paperwork. Meet me. Alone.
Nathan forwarded it to Carter.
“No meetings,” Carter said when he called back. “If he wants to talk, he can contact us through counsel.”
“Do you think he'll cooperate?”
“I think he's worried. That's not the same thing.”
Meanwhile, Victoria was sitting in a downtown hotel suite, listening to her attorney explain the trust challenge.
“They have a handwriting expert,” he said. “If you knew the filing contained an unauthorized signature, I need to know.”
Victoria folded her arms. “Richard handled the paperwork.”
“Did you authorize him to do that?”
“I wanted Emma's future secured.”
“By putting yourself in control of her assets?”
Victoria stood abruptly. “I don't pay you to interrogate me.”
“You pay me to advise you. Do not destroy records or contact witnesses.”
After he left, Victoria called Richard.
“They've challenged the trust.”
“Then Nathan knows.”
“He knows what Daniel told him. Nothing more.”
Richard's breathing sounded ragged. “Carter's asking about the crash.”
Victoria lowered her voice. “Keep your mouth shut.”
“You promised Claire's files were gone.”
“Don't say her name on the phone.”
A pause.
“Victoria,” Richard whispered, “what if he finds the original letter?”
She went still.
“What letter?”
“The one Claire left with her lawyer. I thought you took it.”
Victoria ended the call without answering.
At Daniel's office, the forensic examiner found a mismatch in the purported signature. Bank records also revealed that Richard had paid the filing lawyer from a company account already under investigation.
Daniel updated Nathan that evening.
“The trust challenge is progressing. But I found a reference in Claire's original estate inventory to a sealed letter.”
“Addressed to whom?”
“To Emma, when she became an adult. The inventory says it was accompanied by a signed statement for Claire's attorney.”
“Where is it?”
“That's the problem. The archived copy is missing its final page.”
Nathan looked toward Emma's bedroom. She was asleep with the blue-dressed doll tucked beneath her chin.
“Find the lawyer,” he said.
“I have a name,” Daniel replied. “Helen Mercer. She retired three years ago.”
“And?”
“She called me back ten minutes ago. She said Claire was frightened when she signed those papers.”
Nathan stood.
“Of whom?”
“Helen wouldn't say over the phone. She wants to speak with Detective Carter present.”
