"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 9 — The Night Everything Fell Apart
Victoria arrived at the Bennett Foundation gala wearing diamonds Alexander had given her on their first anniversary.
She had chosen the red dress deliberately. Cameras liked red. Reporters remembered red. And if her husband intended to embarrass her, she wanted the photographs to show a woman who looked impossible to defeat.
The ballroom at the Greenwich country club glittered beneath crystal chandeliers. Donors moved between white-clothed tables. A jazz quartet played beside a wall of flowers. The foundation's annual dinner raised money for children's literacy programs.
Victoria had once called it her favorite night of the year.
Tonight she needed it to save her.
“Mrs. Bennett!” a photographer called. “Where's Alexander?”
“Working,” she said, offering her practiced smile. “You know my husband. He never stops.”
A woman from the foundation board approached and squeezed her arm.
“I heard things have been difficult at home.”
“Families go through misunderstandings,” Victoria replied. “I only hope people remember how much I love both boys.”
The woman nodded sympathetically.
Victoria glanced toward the entrance. She had arranged for a friendly society columnist to attend. One careful conversation about a troubled child and an exhausted father could change the public narrative by morning.
Then Alexander walked in.
He wore a charcoal tuxedo and no wedding ring. Daniel Brooks accompanied him, carrying a slim document case.
Victoria's smile tightened.
“Darling,” she said loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. “I'm so glad you came.”
Alexander stopped two steps away.
“Don't call me that.”
The quartet continued playing, but the conversation around them thinned.
“Must we do this here?” she whispered.
“You chose here.”
Victoria touched his sleeve. He moved back before she could make contact.
“I'm trying to protect our family,” she said.
“Then stop talking about Noah to strangers.”
Her eyes flicked to Daniel.
“You've brought your lawyer to a charity dinner?”
“I brought the foundation's legal counsel to make sure tonight's announcements are accurate.”
“Announcements?”
Alexander did not answer. He walked toward the stage.
Across town, Noah sat on the living-room rug with Margaret, assembling a model spaceship. The television was off. Alexander had explained that adults needed to handle the gala and that Noah did not have to watch any of it.
“Will Dad come home tonight?” Noah asked.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“Even if Victoria gets mad?”
Margaret pressed two plastic pieces together.
“Especially then.”
Oliver sat on the opposite end of the couch, his overnight bag beside him. His aunt, Caroline Hayes, had brought him to visit Noah for an hour after both boys asked. Caroline would take him back to her house afterward.
Oliver kept turning a loose wheel between his fingers.
“I used to think you liked eating upstairs,” he told Noah.
Noah looked up. “Why?”
“Mom said you wanted privacy.”
“I wanted dinner.”
Oliver lowered his head.
“I'm sorry.”
Noah studied him. “You gave Dad the phone.”
“I should've done it sooner.”

Neither boy knew what to say after that. Margaret handed them the next page of instructions.
At the gala, Victoria found her columnist near the dessert display.
“There's a great deal people don't understand about Alexander's son,” she began.
The columnist raised her phone to record.
Before Victoria could continue, Daniel stepped beside them.
“Mrs. Bennett,” he said, “you've been advised not to disclose a minor's private information. Please respect that.”
Victoria's cheeks burned.
“Are you following me?”
“I'm making sure you understand the boundary.”
She watched him leave and decided to take the microphone before Alexander could.
The emcee introduced her as the foundation's co-host. Victoria climbed the steps, accepted the microphone, and turned toward the tables.
“Tonight is about children,” she began. “And as a mother, I know that families sometimes face painful challenges. My own family has been subjected to rumors—”
Alexander stood.
“Victoria. Stop.”
A hush spread across the room.
She smiled as if this were a charming interruption.
“Alexander, please. I'm speaking from the heart.”
“Then leave the children out of it.”
He approached the stage. The emcee stepped aside.
Victoria gripped the microphone.
“You're going to humiliate your wife in front of everyone?”
“No. I'm going to correct something you just said.”
Alexander faced the guests.
“Victoria and I are separated. She is no longer representing me or our household. The foundation board has been informed of changes to her role, which will be handled under its governance procedures.”
Someone gasped. A camera shutter clicked.
He waited until the room settled.
“There are allegations involving the mistreatment of a child and attempted misuse of funds held for that child's benefit. Those matters are being reviewed by the appropriate professionals and authorities. I won't share a child's private suffering for anyone's entertainment.”
Victoria stepped toward him.
“You're accusing me of a crime?”
“I'm saying the records have been preserved, the trustee has stopped the disputed transaction, and the investigation will follow the evidence.”
She laughed sharply.
“Because Noah told you a story? That boy has destroyed everything!”
The microphone carried her words to the far wall.
Alexander went still.
“Don't you dare blame him.”
“I gave that child a home!”
“He already had one.”
The words struck harder than a shout.
Near the rear doors, Caroline had just arrived to collect a coat she had left with a friend before returning to the boys. Oliver had insisted on coming with her after learning Victoria was speaking publicly about Noah. He stood beside his aunt, listening.
“Mom?” he called.
Victoria turned. “Oliver, go wait in the car.”
“You said Noah wanted to eat alone.”
“Not now.”
“You said he made up the basement.”
“Oliver!”
His small voice shook, but he kept going.
“Noah didn't ruin anything, Mom. You did.”
A silence fell so complete that Alexander could hear glassware clink in the kitchen beyond the ballroom.
Caroline put a hand on Oliver's shoulder. Alexander motioned for a staff member to escort them to a quiet room, away from the guests and cameras.
Victoria stared after her son, her expression emptied of its polished charm.
“This is your doing,” she whispered to Alexander.
“No,” he said. “These are the consequences of your choices.”
He left the stage without asking for applause. The board chair resumed the program, urging guests to respect the family's privacy.
In the corridor, Daniel's phone rang.
He listened, asked two questions, then covered the receiver.
“Richard's attorney has contacted the investigators again,” he said. “He has provided account records and messages. They still need authentication, but he's naming Victoria as the person who directed the transfers.”
Alexander looked toward the ballroom doors. Victoria was already leaving through a side exit.
“Can she move the money?”
“Not through the frozen instructions. But there may be other accounts we haven't identified.”
Daniel listened again. His face changed.
“What is it?” Alexander asked.
“They've found a second account. And according to Richard's records, Victoria arranged an appointment at the bank for tomorrow morning.”
Alexander took out his phone.
“Then we make sure nobody loses another dollar while the authorities do their jobs.”
Outside, Victoria climbed into a waiting SUV and told the driver to take her to Stamford.
For the first time that evening, her hands were shaking.
