"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 4 — The Birthday Nobody Remembered
Noah's birthday was eleven days away.
Alexander learned this not from a calendar reminder but from a school worksheet tucked into his son's backpack. In careful block letters, Noah had written that he would be eight on November third.
Under the question WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY? he had written: DINNER WITH DAD.
Alexander sat on the edge of the mudroom bench, the paper trembling between his fingers.
He had sent gifts every year. A telescope when Noah turned five. A bicycle at six. Last year, a model train set so elaborate that Alexander had paid a specialist to assemble the track.
Noah had thanked him on video calls, always with Victoria standing nearby.
Had he ever seen the gifts?
At breakfast, Alexander tried to sound casual.
“Your birthday's coming up. Want a party?”
Noah stopped stirring his oatmeal.
“We don't have to.”
“I'd like to celebrate you.”
“Can we just have dinner?”
“Sure. Cake too?”
The boy glanced toward the doorway. “If it's not too expensive.”
Alexander set down his coffee. “You don't have to worry about that.”
“Victoria said birthday parties are for kids who behave.”
“What happened last year?”
Noah's spoon clinked against the bowl. “Nothing.”
Alexander waited.
“She said I lost my birthday because I cried when Oliver opened the presents.”
“Why was Oliver opening presents on your birthday?”
Noah rubbed his eyes. “There was a party for him. His soccer team came. They had a big cake with blue frosting.”
“Was it his birthday?”
“No.”
“Where were you?”
“In my room.”
Alexander felt the old urge to storm across the house and demand an explanation. Victoria was staying away for now, and Noah needed something better than another shouting match.
“What did you do that day?”
“I made a cake.”
Alexander managed a smile. “You did?”
“Not a real one. I put cookie pieces together and made a candle from a pencil. I didn't light it.”
“What did you wish for?”
Noah shook his head. “If I tell, it won't come true.”
Alexander nodded. “Fair enough.”
After Noah left for school with Margaret, Alexander called his assistant in Manhattan. He asked for purchase records and delivery confirmations for every gift he'd sent his son over the past three years.
Within an hour, his inbox filled with receipts.
The telescope had been delivered. So had the bicycle. The train set had arrived in four large boxes. All were signed for at the house.
Alexander walked through Noah's bedroom. There was no telescope, no bicycle helmet, no train track. A few books lined the shelf, and a faded stuffed bear sat against the pillows.
He knocked on Oliver's door.
Oliver sat on the floor building a plastic spaceship. Since Victoria left, he had spoken very little. Richard, his biological father, hadn't answered calls about temporary arrangements, so Daniel was helping coordinate an appropriate caregiver while Alexander made sure the boy wasn't left without support.

“Hey, Oliver. Can I ask you something?”
Oliver shrugged.
“Do you remember Noah's birthday last year?”
The boy snapped two plastic pieces together. “Mom said Noah didn't want a party.”
“Did he tell you that?”
“No.”
“Do you remember getting a train set?”
Oliver looked up. “The one with the bridge?”
“Yes.”
“Mom said it was mine because Noah was too little to take care of it.”
Alexander's jaw tightened. “Where is it now?”
“In the attic, I think.”
“Thank you for telling me.”
Oliver stared at the spaceship. “Am I going to get in trouble?”
“No. You're not responsible for the choices adults made.”
The boy's shoulders loosened a fraction.
Margaret returned at noon and found Alexander sorting old delivery records at the kitchen table. She recognized the telescope receipt immediately.
“Mrs. Bennett told Noah it was sent back,” she said.
“Was it?”
“I saw her carry the box upstairs.”
“Where?”
“Her dressing room. There are cabinets along the far wall.”
Alexander hesitated. Daniel had warned him against rummaging through Victoria's private locked belongings. He called his attorney, described the missing gifts, and asked how to proceed lawfully.
“Document what you know,” Daniel said. “Don't force locks. If she's willing to arrange a supervised inventory, that's preferable. We can seek the appropriate legal process if she refuses.”
Victoria refused.
When Alexander called, she laughed.
“Now you're accusing me of stealing birthday presents?”
“I'm asking where they are.”
“I have no obligation to explain every toy in that house.”
“They were gifts for Noah.”
“He destroys things, Alexander. I was protecting them.”
“Then tell me where you put them.”
She hung up.
An hour later, her attorney emailed Daniel proposing a supervised collection of Victoria's personal belongings. Daniel negotiated that both sides could document disputed items in common areas and any storage Victoria agreed to open, without treating her cooperation as a waiver of rights.
The following afternoon, Victoria arrived with her attorney and a moving company representative. She wore sunglasses despite the cloudy sky.
Noah stayed at school for an after-class art activity. Oliver was visiting a family friend.
Victoria walked through the upstairs hall without looking at Alexander.
“You've turned my life into a circus,” she said.
“You could have answered a simple question.”
In the dressing room, she opened cabinets and directed movers toward suitcases. Alexander stood with Daniel and the inventory representative.
Then the representative pointed to a large taped carton behind a row of garment bags.
“Is this yours, Mrs. Bennett?”
Victoria went still. “It's household storage.”
“May we list the contents?” Daniel asked. “Your client can decline.”
Her attorney spoke quietly to her. After a long pause, Victoria nodded.
The tape peeled away with a dry ripping sound.
Inside lay a telescope in its original packaging, a sealed train set, birthday cards addressed to Noah, and several small wrapped boxes. At the bottom were envelopes written in Alexander's own hand.

He picked up one letter. On the front, he'd drawn a crooked star beside Noah's name. He remembered writing it in a hotel room after missing his son's sixth birthday.
Victoria said, “I was going to give him those when he was ready.”
“Three years later?” Alexander asked.
“He's ungrateful. You don't see how he acts.”
Daniel photographed the contents as the representative listed each item. Victoria's attorney objected to any suggestion that the inventory established criminal wrongdoing. Daniel agreed it established only what they had found.
Alexander didn't need a courtroom to understand the cruelty.
That evening he laid the unopened birthday letters on Noah's desk. The boy stared at them as though they might disappear if he blinked.
“Those are for me?”
“Every one.”
“Victoria said you forgot.”
Alexander sat beside him. “I didn't forget your birthday. But I did fail to make sure you got what I sent. I'm sorry.”
Noah opened the oldest envelope. His lips moved as he read the first line.
Dear Noah, I wish I could be there to see you blow out your candles.
He looked at his father. “You really wrote this?”
“I did.”
Noah climbed into his lap, holding the letter carefully between them.
Alexander wrapped both arms around him.
Later, as he tucked Noah into bed, the boy asked a question Alexander couldn't stop thinking about.
“Dad, if Victoria hid your letters, did she hide Mommy's too?”
Alexander froze.
“What letters from Mommy?”
Noah reached under his pillow and pulled out a folded scrap of pink stationery.
“She used to leave notes for me,” he said. “Victoria said there weren't any more. But I found this one in the trash.”
Alexander unfolded the paper. Emily's familiar handwriting crossed the page.
At the bottom was a line he'd never seen before.
When you're older, ask Daddy about the special place I made just for you.
Alexander read it twice.
Emily had never mentioned a special place.
And Victoria, he suddenly realized, might have known exactly what it meant.
