"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 3 — The Perfect Stepmother
By seven the next morning, Victoria had begun telling her version of the story.
Alexander woke to twelve missed calls, three texts from his sister in Boston, and an email from a Greenwich parents' group asking whether his family was all right.
A photograph circulated online: Victoria hugging Oliver at a charity picnic, smiling beneath a caption about how difficult it was to raise a blended family.
Alexander hadn't posted anything. He hadn't even told his sister what happened.
Daniel Brooks called as Alexander stood in the kitchen watching Noah push scrambled eggs around his plate.
“Don't respond publicly,” Daniel said. “I want the school records first. And preserve every message she sends.”
“She's telling people my son is unstable.”
“Then we'll find out who created that story.”
Alexander hung up and slid into the chair beside Noah.
“Want toast?”
Noah blinked. “I can have some?”
“Of course.”
“Even if I don't finish the eggs?”
Alexander kept his voice steady. “Even then.”
He made the toast himself. It burned on one side, and Noah laughed for the first time since his father came home.
The sound nearly undid him.
Later that morning, Alexander drove to Noah's elementary school. The principal, Mrs. Parker, welcomed him into an office decorated with student drawings and a paper calendar.
“We've been concerned,” she admitted.
“Why wasn't I told?”
“We sent notices to the primary contact listed in Noah's file.”
“That's me.”
Mrs. Parker opened the enrollment record. “It's Mrs. Bennett. Your wife asked us to route routine communication through her while you traveled.”
Alexander read the contact information. His own email address had been replaced with an account he didn't recognize.
“Who authorized that change?”
Mrs. Parker checked the notes. “We have a form bearing your signature.”
“Show me.”
The signature looked close enough to fool a stranger. It was too round at the end, and Alexander never wrote the middle initial shown there.
“That isn't mine.”
Mrs. Parker's expression shifted. “Then we need to review our records immediately.”
The school counselor, Ms. Reed, joined them. She explained that Noah had missed several lunch periods because he claimed he wasn't hungry. Once, a teacher found him eating crackers behind the gym after everyone else had gone outside.
“Did he say why?” Alexander asked.
“He said he didn't want anyone angry with him for taking food.”
Alexander looked down at his hands.
Ms. Reed continued gently. “We also received an outside assessment saying Noah had persistent oppositional behavior. It didn't match what we saw in class.”
“Who submitted it?”
“Mrs. Bennett.”
“Did you speak to the clinician?”
“We requested a release. We never received one.”
Alexander asked for copies through the school's normal records process. He would not make another decision based on something Victoria merely claimed.
Before he left, Noah's teacher, Ms. Alvarez, stopped him in the hallway.
“Mr. Bennett, I don't want to overstep.”

“Please.”
“She is a kind boy,” Ms. Alvarez said, then corrected herself with a strained smile. “He's a kind boy. He gives his pencils away when classmates forget theirs. But he apologizes every time he asks for help.”
Alexander swallowed. “Thank you for telling me.”
At home, Daniel had arranged a secure meeting with an independent document examiner. The suspicious school form and several other documents would need proper authentication, not guesses made across a kitchen table.
Victoria called at noon.
“You went to his school?” she demanded.
“Yes.”
“Without discussing it with me?”
“I'm his father.”
“And I'm the person who's been raising him while you chase another skyscraper.”
Alexander looked through the glass doors. Noah was in the garden with Margaret, helping her collect fallen leaves.
“You were supposed to protect him.”
“I did. You're letting guilt make you irrational.”
“Why did the school have a contact form I never signed?”
A pause.
“Ask your assistant. You sign things without reading them all the time.”
“Not that.”
“You think you're so certain. Wait until everyone hears how Noah behaves when nobody's watching.”
She ended the call.
Alexander saved the recording of his recollection in written notes for Daniel, careful not to pretend he had recorded the conversation itself.
That afternoon, Margaret showed him Victoria's home office. Daniel had advised them not to break into locked storage or search accounts without legal authority. The office door was open, and Margaret pointed only to items in plain view.
A framed certificate honored Victoria's work with a children's foundation. Beside it sat a photograph of Victoria and Oliver serving meals at a shelter.
Noah was absent from both pictures.
“People loved her,” Margaret said. “She knew exactly what they wanted to see.”
Alexander noticed a stack of charity invitations addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett. He remembered attending two of those events and praising Victoria's generosity.
“How did I miss it?” he asked.
Margaret hesitated. “She always made sure you came home to the good days.”
After dinner, Noah sat at the kitchen island drawing with blue and green markers. Alexander took the stool beside him.
“What are you making?”
“A house.”
“Looks like ours.”
Noah nodded. “It's for school. Ms. Alvarez said to draw our family.”
The picture showed Victoria and Oliver at a large table. Alexander stood beside them in a dark suit. On the far side of the page, behind a square of blue marker, was a tiny boy.
“Who's that?” Alexander asked, although he already knew.
“Me.”
“Why are you outside?”
Noah pressed the marker cap until it clicked. “I wanted everyone to fit.”
“There was room at the table.”
“Not for me.”
Alexander reached for the picture, then stopped. “May I keep this?”
Noah considered. “Will you get in trouble?”
“No.”
“Okay. But don't show Victoria. She says pictures can make people think bad things.”
Alexander laid the drawing flat and photographed it for Daniel, preserving the original in a folder.
A message arrived from the attorney a minute later.
The outside behavioral assessment listed a licensed clinician whose office had confirmed no record of ever evaluating Noah Bennett.
Daniel's next message was shorter.
We need to find out who created that document.
Alexander looked from the screen to his son's drawing.
Then Noah quietly added, “Dad, I drew another picture last year. Victoria tore it up because it had Mommy Emily in it.”
“Do you remember where?”
“She said dead people don't belong in a new family.”
Alexander held the edge of the counter until his knuckles whitened.
Noah leaned closer. “Was Mommy bad for wanting me?”
Alexander turned toward him. “No, son. She loved you more than anything.”
The boy studied him for a long moment.
“Then why did everybody act like she never lived here?”
