"The Unwanted Son" Chapter 2 — The Door She Kept Locked
The basement door was locked.
Alexander tried the handle twice, although he had never needed a key to enter his own basement. Behind him, Victoria stood with her arms crossed, breathing too quickly.
“It's a storage area,” she said. “The children aren't supposed to go down there.”
“Then why does Noah know what it's like to be trapped inside?”
“He's confused.”
Alexander turned. “Give me the key.”
“I don't carry every key in this house.”
“Then tell me who does.”
Margaret appeared at the kitchen doorway. She still wore her gray uniform and an expression Alexander had never seen on her face.
“Mrs. Bennett keeps it in the drawer by the pantry,” she said.
Victoria spun toward her. “Margaret.”
“Bring it,” Alexander said.
The housekeeper returned with a small brass key on a red ribbon. Alexander unlocked the basement door and switched on the light. Narrow wooden steps descended toward concrete flooring and rows of metal shelves.
He remembered taking Noah downstairs to find Christmas decorations two years earlier. The boy had laughed at an old inflatable snowman with a hole in its nose.
Tonight the basement smelled of dust and bleach.
At the far wall stood a windowless storage room with a new steel latch mounted outside its door.
Alexander touched the latch. “Who installed this?”
Victoria stayed at the foot of the stairs. “A contractor. We had a leak.”
“A leak doesn't require a lock on the outside.”
“It's for the cleaning supplies.”
Alexander opened the door. Inside were paint cans, folded tarps, and a plastic chair. A weak ceiling bulb lit the narrow room. There was no window, no telephone, and no handle that would release the exterior latch.
He crouched near the wall. Pencil marks ran beside the doorframe: crooked lines, small circles, and a shaky drawing of a house.
Underneath, in childish handwriting, were four words.
DAD PLEASE COME HOME.
Alexander braced one hand against the concrete.
“How long?” he asked.
Victoria gave a sharp laugh. “You cannot seriously believe he was trapped in here. Children write on walls.”
“How long was he here?”
“I have no idea what you're talking about.”
Margaret stepped inside. “Three hours the first time.”
Victoria's face drained of color.
Alexander looked at the housekeeper. “The first time?”
Margaret gripped the doorframe. “I heard him crying. Mrs. Bennett told me he was having a tantrum and needed to calm down.”
“Why didn't you open it?”
“I tried.” Her voice broke. “She had the key. She told me if I interfered, I'd be fired and she'd make sure nobody hired me again.”
Alexander stared at the marks on the wall. Each line might have been a minute. Each circle might have been a desperate attempt to make time pass.
He stood. “We're going upstairs.”
Victoria caught his sleeve. “Alex, we need to talk privately.”
“You've had plenty of privacy.”
In the kitchen, Noah and Oliver sat on opposite ends of the breakfast bench. Margaret's assistant, Carla, had brought them hot chocolate. Noah didn't touch his.

Alexander crouched beside him. “I found the room.”
Noah's face tightened. “Are you mad?”
“I'm angry that somebody hurt you.”
“She said I was bad because I took Mommy's picture off the mantel.”
“Emily's picture?”
Noah nodded. “I wanted it in my room. Victoria said the house belonged to the new family now.”
Alexander's chest hurt. He remembered the photograph: Emily laughing in the garden with baby Noah in her arms. He had wondered why it disappeared and accepted Victoria's explanation about redecorating.
“Did she lock you in there because of the picture?”
“Yes.”
“Did it happen more than once?”
Noah looked at Oliver, then nodded again.
Oliver whispered, “Mom said he needed to learn.”
Victoria came into the kitchen. “Enough. This interrogation is cruel.”
Alexander stood between her and the boys. “You won't speak to Noah tonight.”
“This is my home.”
“And he's my child.”
He called Daniel Brooks, his attorney, and explained the situation without softening a word. Daniel instructed him to preserve the room, save messages, and avoid disturbing any possible evidence. He also urged Alexander to contact the appropriate child protection authorities and seek immediate legal guidance about separating the household.
Alexander called the local police nonemergency line, explained that his child reported being confined in a locked room, and requested an officer. The dispatcher asked whether Noah was safe now.
“He's with me,” Alexander said. “He'll stay with me.”
Victoria heard the call. “You're calling the police on your own wife?”
“I'm reporting what happened to my son.”
“You'll destroy this family.”
Alexander looked toward Noah. “That started long before I came home.”
Two officers arrived within the hour. Alexander showed them the latch and the pencil marks. Margaret gave an initial account. Noah spoke briefly with a female officer in a quiet room while Alexander waited nearby, following her guidance rather than pressing him for details.
Victoria insisted everything was a misunderstanding. She offered to show family photographs, school emails, and messages from friends who considered her a devoted mother.
The officer told her the report would document the allegations and be referred for follow-up. No one promised Alexander an immediate outcome.
By midnight, Daniel had arranged for Victoria to stay elsewhere voluntarily while he sought legal advice on stronger protections. Victoria packed an overnight bag with angry, mechanical movements.
At the front door she leaned toward Alexander.
“You'll regret letting a child turn you against me.”
He opened the door. “Go.”
Her SUV rolled down the driveway, red taillights fading through the rain.
Alexander returned upstairs. Noah sat on his bed holding Emily's framed photograph, which Margaret had found in a linen closet.
“Is she coming back?” the boy asked.
“Not tonight. I'm working to make sure you're safe.”
Noah studied his father's face. “Do you have to leave tomorrow?”
“No.”
“You always say that before the phone rings.”
Alexander took his phone from his pocket, turned it off, and placed it on the dresser.
“Tonight, the phone can wait.”
Noah moved over, making room on the bed.
After the boy fell asleep, Alexander found Margaret waiting in the hallway. Her eyes were red.
“Sir,” she said, “there's something else.”
He stepped into the hall and closed the bedroom door.
“She threatened me for months,” Margaret whispered. “But it wasn't only about the basement. She made me sign papers saying Noah had behavior problems.”
“What papers?”
“School forms. Reports. Things I didn't write.”
Alexander felt a new kind of fear, colder than rage.
“Where are they?”
Margaret glanced toward Victoria's locked office.
“She kept copies. And she told me if you ever found out, she'd make sure you believed I was the one who hurt him.”
