"The Barefoot Boy Who Helped My Daughter Stand." Chapter 9
Ten Minutes
Charles arrived an hour early.
Mrs. Bell spotted his car from the upstairs landing and asked whether she should let him in. Nathaniel looked out at the driveway.
His father-in-law sat behind the wheel of an old sedan, both hands resting in his lap. He had sent his driver away months ago.
"I'll ask Lily," Nathaniel said.
Lily was choosing a book in the sunroom.
"He's outside early. Do you want him to come in?"
"We said three."
"All right."
At three, Nathaniel opened the front door.
Charles wore a brown coat that Nathaniel had not seen before. He carried no presents.
"Thank you for letting me come," he said.
Nathaniel stepped aside.
Lily had chosen her wheelchair even though she had used her sticks that morning. The blue cushion with stars showed beneath her hands.
Charles stopped well short of her.
"Hello, Lily."
"Hello."
He glanced at her legs, then lifted his eyes.
"I didn't come to ask you to show me anything."
"Good."
Nathaniel remained near the window. Lily had asked him to stay, though she had also made him promise not to speak for her.
Charles stood until she pointed to a chair.
"You can sit there."
He did.
She held Biscuit's bell inside her fist. Nathaniel could see a little brass edge between her fingers.
"If Mom were alive, would you tell her you were sorry?"
Charles swallowed.
"Yes."
"Even if she still wanted to go away?"
"Yes."
"Would you let her?"
His face tightened at the word let. He looked down, then back at his granddaughter.
"It wouldn't be mine to decide."
Lily watched him for a long moment.
"You never liked Aunt Sophie."
"We argued."
"Mom said you argued because she didn't do what you told her."
Charles gave a small, tired smile.
"Your mother was usually right about me."
Lily's fist loosened around the bell.
After that, they talked about the horses. One of the younger ones had learned to open a gate, and Charles knew exactly which latch would need replacing. He began to describe how it should be done, stopped himself, and asked whether the stable manager had already handled it.
Lily said he had.
At ten minutes, her watch chimed.
She looked at Charles. He stood at once.
"Thank you for seeing me."
He did not lean down for a kiss. He did not tell her how much the visit meant.
When Nathaniel walked him to the door, Charles paused beside the staircase.
"She looks taller."
"She is."
Charles nodded. His hand rested briefly on the newel post, worn smooth by generations of Whitmores. Then he went outside.
Back in the sunroom, Lily was inspecting the alarm on her watch.
"Was that too short?" she asked.
"It was what you offered."
She thought about it.
"Maybe next week he could stay for tea."
Nathaniel sat beside her. "You can tell him when you're ready."

The visits did not become easy simply because the first one had ended without tears.
One Sunday, Lily asked Charles to leave after he called her brave. Another week, she wanted to hear about Amelia as a little girl and listened for almost an hour.
Nathaniel sometimes left the room because Charles's voice made him remember the library. Other times, they found themselves discussing a leaking roof or an old story about Amelia, and he forgot to be guarded until afterward.
Nobody announced that they had become a family again. They made plans for the next Sunday, and sometimes changed them.
That summer, Claire asked whether Nathaniel knew of somewhere a small group of families could meet while their children attended an accessible activity program.
He offered the west wing before thinking through the details.
Mrs. Bell made him think through them.
There were bathroom doors to widen, paths that turned to mud, and bedrooms reachable only by steps. The kitchen needed a schedule that did not assume every child ate the same thing at the same time.
Rachel stood at the planning table with a pencil behind her ear.
"If you're inviting families for a week, we're feeding families for a week," she told him. "Not putting out tiny sandwiches and hoping for the best."
Nathaniel crossed out the catering estimate.
"Tell me what you need."
Lily inspected the proposed routes through the garden. Noah accompanied her with a measuring tape and developed strong opinions about gravel.
Charles offered to fund part of the work. Nathaniel accepted only after they agreed that the people running the program would decide how it was used.
The first families arrived the following spring. Some children used wheelchairs. Others used walkers or needed help in ways Nathaniel would not have noticed two years earlier.
The house became louder, less tidy, and much harder to mistake for a museum.
One afternoon, a child knocked a ceramic bowl from a low table. Nathaniel heard Mrs. Bell say, "Good. I've hated that thing since 1998."
He pretended not to hear.
By the second anniversary of Charles's birthday party, the families and staff had planned a celebration of their own.
Lily wanted to call it the Free Steps Ball. When Noah asked whether people had to take steps, she told him he was being deliberately annoying, then added an explanation to the invitations so nobody would worry.
Charles volunteered to arrange the chairs. Rachel threatened to send him home if he put more than eight at a table. He moved two without arguing.
On the afternoon of the ball, Nathaniel found his daughter in her bedroom with a lavender dress laid across the bed.
She was eleven now. Noah, twelve, had spent the morning complaining about the tie Rachel had bought him.
Lily held the dress against herself.
"It's almost the same color."
"It is," Nathaniel said.
"I didn't notice when I picked it."
He accepted this explanation without mentioning the three other colors she had rejected.
Downstairs, musicians were warming up. A violin climbed through a scale, stopped, and began again.
Lily looked toward the walking sticks against her dresser, then at her chair.
"I don't know how to go in," she said.
