"The Barefoot Boy Who Helped My Daughter Stand." Chapter 7
The Third Step
Lily was waiting in the sunroom when Noah came inside.
She had heard enough from Mrs. Bell to know about the fight. Nathaniel watched Noah stop at the door, with Rachel a few feet behind him.
"I punched somebody," he said.
Lily looked at his lip.
"It doesn't look like you won."
He gave a surprised little laugh, then winced.
"I wasn't trying to win."
"Why did you do it?"
Noah glanced at the adults. Rachel drew Nathaniel toward the adjoining room. They remained close enough to hear without standing in the doorway.
"He said I'd be like my dad," Noah told her.
"So you hit him?"
"I know. It was dumb."
"Does your hand hurt?"
"A little."
There was a pause. Nathaniel could hear Lily moving something across the table.
"You can hold the cards with the other one," she said.
Rachel turned her face toward the window. Nathaniel pretended to study a plant while she wiped beneath her eyes.
Noah apologized to Mason the following week. The school dealt with the taunting as well as the fight, and Rachel kept Noah home from his usual Saturday outing. He complained, then spent most of the day helping her assemble a bookshelf that leaned to the left.
When Nathaniel visited their apartment to return a forgotten jacket, Noah proudly showed him the shelf.
"Don't touch the top," Rachel said from the kitchen.
Nathaniel kept his hands in his pockets.
Lily's own progress was more difficult to measure than Noah's improving school days.
She could sometimes stand beside the therapy bars for several seconds. On other afternoons, transferring out of her chair exhausted her. Audrey kept notes without announcing every number to the room.
Nathaniel learned to bring a book instead of a stopwatch.
One cold afternoon, Lily asked him to watch.
He closed the book at once, then made himself open it again while she and Audrey got ready. He did not want to frighten her with the size of his attention.
Noah sat at the far end of the converted gallery. He had drawn a horse for her, although it looked enough like Biscuit that she had accused him of reusing the dog.
"It has a mane," he pointed out.
"It has a dog's face."
"Horses can have interesting faces."
She laughed and set both hands on the bars.
Audrey stayed close. Nathaniel watched his daughter move her weight forward, then lift one foot.
The shoe settled onto the mat.
She drew the other foot after it.
Nathaniel felt his own shoulders tighten. He let them drop.
"I'm coming to see the terrible horse," Lily told Noah.
"He can hear you."
She took another step.
At the service doorway, a tray slipped from a waiter's hands.
The crash of metal against stone cut through the gallery.
Lily screamed.
Her hands flew from the bars. Audrey caught her as her knees folded, guiding her down onto the mat, but Lily was already reaching for something that wasn't there.

"Mom, make him stop!"
Nathaniel was across the room before he remembered moving.
"Lily, I'm here."
She shoved at his hands.
"The car's going over. Make him stop!"
Audrey asked him for space. The request struck him like an insult, and then he saw his daughter's eyes, fixed somewhere beyond his face.
He moved back.
Noah had put down the drawing. He sat very still on his chair.
"Lily," Audrey said, "you're in the gallery. I'm here beside you. Can you feel the mat?"
It took several tries before Lily looked at her.
Nathaniel knelt a few feet away. He could see the waiter beyond the door, pale and shaking, with Mrs. Bell quietly leading him out.
Eventually Lily asked for her wheelchair.
Nathaniel brought it. He locked the wheels and let Audrey help her transfer.
Lily would not look at him.
"I don't want to do this anymore."
The words he had always used rose automatically: You were doing so well. It was only a fright. We can't give up now.
He swallowed them.
"All right," he said. "We'll stop for today."
"Not just today."
He looked at Audrey, who gave a small nod.
"We don't have to decide the rest of it right now."
Lily pushed past him toward the door.
That evening, she refused dinner. Nathaniel left toast outside her room and sat in the hall until she called to ask why he was making the floor creak.
He told her he was trying to sit down quietly and failing.
She opened the door long enough to take the plate.
For nearly three weeks, the therapy bars stood unused.
Lily still saw the people helping her, but she refused standing exercises. Noah came over, and sometimes she sent him away after ten minutes. He returned the next scheduled afternoon without mentioning it.
An old photograph from the party reappeared online beneath a new headline asking what had happened to the miracle.
Nathaniel called his communications office and demanded to know who had spoken about his daughter.
Nobody had. The writer had simply found a story to recycle.
He spent an hour preparing an angry response before seeing Lily reflected in his office window. She had rolled up behind him without his noticing.
"Are you working on me again?" she asked.
He turned off the screen.
"I'm sorry. I was angry about something somebody wrote."
"Then don't show me."
He didn't.
The next afternoon, he went looking for her before Rachel and Noah left. She was not in the sunroom or her bedroom.
He found the ballroom doors open.
Lily sat beneath the central chandelier, in almost the exact place where she had stood on Charles's birthday. Noah was beside her on the floor.
Nathaniel stopped outside, unwilling to interrupt the first conversation she had chosen to have all day.
"Was it a mistake?" she asked.
Noah looked up.
"What was?"
"That night. I did it, and now everything's worse."
He pulled at a shoelace.
"Everything isn't worse."
"I can't do it again."
The chandelier made small circles of light on the marble. Lily looked down at her shoes.
"Maybe that night didn't mean anything."
