"The Barefoot Boy Who Helped My Daughter Stand." Chapter 5
The Truth at the Window
"You were supposed to go wherever the grown-up looking after you said it was safe to go," Nathaniel told her.
Lily turned the purple pencil between her palms.
"I said I wanted to see Aunt Sophie."
He waited.
"Mom asked if I wanted to stay with her for a little while. I said yes because she has the room with the bunk beds."
Her voice became smaller.
"If I'd said no, we wouldn't have got in the car."
Nathaniel moved his chair closer.
"Lily, look at me."
She stared at the pencil.
"Sweetheart, please."
When she lifted her face, he saw the effort it cost her. She had been waiting three years for someone to explain what she had done wrong.
"Wanting to see your aunt did not cause the crash."
"But if—"
"You were six. You didn't choose the road or drive the car. You didn't make the phone call."
The pencil snapped between her hands.
She looked down at the broken pieces, startled, and then began to cry.
Nathaniel reached for her. She came into his arms with an exhausted little sound that hurt worse than a scream.
He had held her while dressings were changed. He had held her through fevers and nightmares. This time there was nothing to fix with a call, nothing to sign.
He put his cheek against her hair and stayed.
At some point, Rachel took Noah into the garden. Nathaniel heard the door close gently.
"Was Mom mad at you?" Lily asked against his jacket.
"She was unhappy with some things between us."
"Did she stop loving you?"
He looked toward the window, where the bare branches of an apple tree moved against the glass.
"She wrote that she loved me. She also needed me to listen better."
"Why didn't you?"
"I thought I knew what would help before she finished telling me what was wrong."
Lily considered that with her head still on his shoulder.
"You do that."
"I know."
He could have said he was trying. He could have promised never to do it again. Instead, he asked if she wanted the rest of her water, and when she shook her head, he left the glass alone.
That afternoon, Nathaniel called Claire. He told her about the drawing, the letter, and Charles's admission. He asked how to support Lily through the conversation her grandfather now owed her.
They did not summon Lily into a room of waiting adults. Nathaniel asked whether she wanted to hear what Charles had to say. She asked whether she could leave halfway through.
"Yes," he said.
"Even if he hasn't finished?"
"Even then."
She chose the small sitting room overlooking the garden. Claire came at her request. Noah waited outside with Rachel, his cards in his coat pocket.
Charles arrived without his usual jacket. His shirt cuffs were rolled unevenly, and he looked at the empty sofa as if he had forgotten how to sit.

Lily stayed by the window.
Nathaniel took the chair beside her, keeping the space between her wheelchair and the door clear.
"Your father told me what you remember," Charles began.
"Then why didn't you tell us before?"
He lowered himself onto the sofa.
"Because I was frightened of what would happen if I did."
"What did you say to the driver?"
Charles looked at Nathaniel, who gave him nothing to hide behind.
"I told him to bring you and your mother back."
"She didn't want to."
"I know."
"She said we were going to Aunt Sophie's."
"I know that too."
Lily's hands lay flat on her lap.
"Then why did you keep talking?"
For the first time, Charles seemed unable to find an answer that made him sound like the man he preferred to be.
"I thought I could make her change her mind. I didn't accept that she had already decided."
Outside, a gardener pushed a wheelbarrow past the window. The soft rattle of its wheel crossed the silence.
"Did Mom die because you called?"
Charles closed his eyes.
Nathaniel wanted to step in, to make the question less terrible. He remembered Amelia's letter inside his desk and remained still.
"I shouldn't have called," Charles said. "I distracted Daniel when he needed to be watching the road. I can't tell you exactly what would have happened otherwise. But my call was part of that day, and I hid it."
Lily watched him.
"You told me nobody could have stopped it."
Charles's mouth trembled.
"I did."
"You knew I was in the car."
"Yes."
She turned her chair toward the window.
No one spoke for a long time.
Then she said, "I don't want you here."
Charles looked at Nathaniel. The old habit of appealing over a child's head was so quick that he might not have noticed it himself.
Nathaniel did.
"You heard her," he said.
Charles stood. He took one step toward the wheelchair, then stopped.
"I'm sorry, Lily."
She did not turn around.
In the corridor, Nathaniel found Noah beside a tall plant. Rachel had gone to fetch their coats from the sunroom.
The boy looked at Charles as he emerged. Charles stopped walking.
"Did you hear us?"
"Some of it," Noah said.
Charles rubbed a hand over his face.
"You must think very little of me."
Noah's shoulders rose.
"I don't know what to think."
Nathaniel was grateful for the unpolished answer.
Charles looked at the boy's repaired sneakers.
"I spoke about your father. It was cruel."
Noah's face closed.
"You didn't know him."
"No. I didn't."
"He did bad stuff. Mom doesn't pretend he didn't."
Charles leaned against the wall.
"Did you love him?"
Noah looked uncomfortable. "He was my dad."
He pushed a bent card deeper into his pocket.
"I can miss him and still be mad at him."
Charles bowed his head. Nathaniel put a hand on Noah's shoulder, ending a conversation that had already asked enough of him.
That night, Charles packed a suitcase. He said he would stay in an apartment in town. He would provide the account Nathaniel had requested, and he would not return without asking first.
Nathaniel stood in the front hall while the driver carried the bag outside.
"Will she forgive me?" Charles asked.
"I don't know."
Charles nodded, as though the uncertainty itself were new to him.
After the car left, Nathaniel went upstairs. Lily was awake, the broken purple pencil on her bedside table.
"Is he gone?"
"Yes."
She touched the empty space beside her on the bed. Nathaniel sat down.
"Can we look at Mom's pictures tomorrow?"
For three years, he had kept most of the albums in a cabinet downstairs.
"We can look now, if you like."
Lily moved her pillow to make room.
Nathaniel went to get the first album.
