"My Daughter Called the Mafia Boss “Daddy.”" Chapter 10
The Library Belonged to Her
On Saturday morning, Elena found Lorenzo sitting on the library carpet wearing a silver plastic crown.
Mia stood in front of him with a wooden wand.
“You have to say it properly.”
“I have already said it twice.”
“You sounded cross.”
“I was given a role without being consulted.”
Elena leaned against the doorway.
“What role did she give you?”
Lorenzo looked up.
“Do not encourage this.”
Mia waved the wand.
“Daddy is the princess.”
Elena pressed her lips together.
“I see.”
“You are enjoying this,” he accused.
“I have not said anything.”
“Your face is saying plenty.”
Mia tapped his shoulder.
“Please say it, Daddy.”
Lorenzo looked toward the ceiling.
“I am Princess Lorenzo.”
Elena laughed so hard that she had to hold the doorframe.
Matteo appeared behind her, took in the scene, and immediately turned as if to leave.
“I should announce myself more carefully in future.”
“Keep walking,” Lorenzo told him.
“Of course, Your Highness.”
The cushion caught him between the shoulders.
Mia shrieked with laughter.
Three months earlier, Elena would have thought the scene impossible. Now there were wooden blocks beneath a table once reserved for business documents and a little blue cardigan hanging over a chair that visiting men approached with caution.
Lorenzo still held meetings.
He still went quiet in a way that made people choose their words carefully.
But he came upstairs for bedtime whenever he was home, and if he was away, he called before Mia began asking.
The first time work kept him late, he called Elena, too.
She had stared at the phone for a moment before answering.
Then she had told him what time dinner would be ready.
The investigation continued through the winter. There were statements to give, records to examine, and days when Matteo returned from an appointment too tired to joke.
The adults handled those days without turning Mia into the reason for every conversation.
Her share of the family’s affairs was limited to asking whether the lawyer who visited could draw a horse.
He could not.
She made him practice.
Marco no longer managed security. For several weeks, Elena saw him only when he came to hand over another file or answer questions.
One afternoon, Lorenzo asked whether she would object to his joining Matteo for lunch.
She considered it.
“No,” she said. “But I don’t want to be told everything is settled because he is sitting at the table again.”
“It isn’t.”
Marco arrived without his old keys.
When Mia asked why he did not come by as often, he told her he had made a mistake and was trying to put it right.
She thought about that.
“Mommy says you have to say sorry properly.”
“I am trying to learn how.”
Elena let him stay for lunch.
It was a beginning she could offer without pretending it was an ending.

Sofia wrote once after leaving the clinic. She enclosed the last documents she had kept and asked for nothing in return.
Elena answered with a short acknowledgment.
She did not send photographs of Mia.
One evening in early spring, Lorenzo took Elena to the coast.
Rosa kept Mia overnight, armed with three picture books and instructions that Lorenzo had written down himself.
The house stood above a small beach, with white shutters and a neglected garden.
Elena walked through the sitting room and found a window facing the sea.
“You bought another house,” she said.
“I did.”
“Was the mansion becoming cramped?”
“The princess needed a summer residence.”
She laughed, then looked at him properly.
He held an envelope.
“The arrangements are in there,” he said. “You can read them with someone who is not employed by me.”
Her smile faded.
“What arrangements have you made?”
“The house is yours. If living at the estate ever becomes difficult, you and Mia have somewhere to go.”
She looked around again.
He had remembered that she liked windows that opened wide.
“Are you trying to send us away?”
His expression changed.
“I want you here with me.”
She went to him before he could explain further.
“I know,” she said, putting her hands against his chest.
He exhaled.
“I want you here because you want to be here.”
“I do.”
“Even when I am difficult?”
“Especially when you admit it.”
His hands settled at her waist.
She kissed him slowly, without a small voice calling from another room or a telephone vibrating on the desk.
When she pulled back, he was smiling.
“Why are you smiling?” she asked.
“I have wanted a whole evening with you for a very long time.”
She took his hand and led him toward the stairs.
The next morning, they burned the toast together.
Two years later, Mia carried their wedding rings in a pale blue dress.
Rosa checked the ribbon securing them three times. Matteo promised he would catch anything she dropped. Marco stood at the back until Lorenzo waved him forward to join the family.
Elena watched that small gesture without needing it explained.
When the officiant asked Lorenzo whether he would take her as his wife, Mia leaned toward him.
“You have to say yes.”
“I was planning to.”
“Then say it.”
He looked at Elena.
“I do.”
She had heard him speak in rooms full of frightened men, over crackling telephone lines, in the quiet after an argument.
She liked his voice best here.
On Mia’s sixth birthday, the library smelled of cake and extinguished candles.
Children’s books occupied the shelves beneath the window. A small desk stood beside Lorenzo’s, its drawers crowded with pencils he was forbidden to borrow without asking.
Mia climbed into his chair.
“Do you remember when I came in here?”
“I remember every second.”
“You were having a meeting.”
“I was.”
“I said you were my daddy.”
“You did.”
She studied his face.
“Were you cross?”
He glanced toward Elena, who stood beside the door holding the cake knife.
“I was frightened.”
Mia looked astonished.
“Were you frightened of me?”
“You frightened me very much.”
“Why were you frightened?”
He sat on the edge of the desk.
“Because you were important to me before I knew anything about you. I did not know how to be your father yet.”
She considered this seriously.
“You learned.”
“I had a demanding teacher.”
She smiled.
Elena crossed the room.
The silver bracelet slipped down her wrist as she set the knife aside. Lorenzo caught her hand and kissed the place beneath it.
Mia leaned against his shoulder.
“Sofia showed me your picture,” she said. “I remember the watch in it.”
Elena nodded.
“She did.”
“But you didn’t know me.”
“I did not know you then,” Lorenzo said.
Mia touched his cheek.
“I’m glad you picked me up.”
His hand closed around hers.
“So am I.”
From the hall, Matteo called that the ice cream was melting. Rosa accused him of eating it from the carton. Marco denied being involved before anyone had asked him.
Mia slid from the chair.
“Come on, Daddy. We need to hurry.”
Lorenzo rose with Elena’s hand still in his.
They followed their daughter through the open door.
