"My Daughter Called the Mafia Boss “Daddy.”" Chapter 9

She Stayed

The kiss was familiar for perhaps a heartbeat.

Then Lorenzo made a small, broken sound against Elena’s mouth, and nothing about it felt like a memory.

His hand spread across her back. She held his shirt, pulling him closer until she could feel the hard beat of his heart.

When they parted, he kept his forehead against hers.

“I have wanted to do that since you said my name in the library.”

“I wanted you to do it.”

“You looked as though you wanted to escape through the window.”

“I wanted that, too.”

He laughed softly, then kissed her again.

She let herself stay until a knock sounded.

Davide waited outside with a telephone in his hand.

“Vale has been asking the contractor for Elena’s current address.”

The warmth left Lorenzo’s face.

Elena stepped away, but he did not release her hand.

“Did they give it to him?”

“The agency refused. He claimed to represent a former landlord.”

“Tell them to preserve the call.”

Davide nodded.

When the door closed, Lorenzo turned to her.

“You and Mia can stay in the east wing tomorrow. Rosa will be with you, and I will tell you where I am.”

Elena listened to the words instead of hearing only an order.

“What are you planning?”

“Matteo’s witness wants her brother out of the warehouse. Davide has arranged to meet him after his shift. Once they are together, she will give her statement.”

“Where will you be?”

“I am going with Matteo to receive the original correspondence.”

She looked at the key on the desk.

“Then call me when you arrive.”

“I will.”

“I want you to call when you leave, too.”

He touched her cheek.

“I will do that, too.”

The next morning, Elena helped Mia choose a dress and let her daughter argue unsuccessfully for wearing rabbit slippers outside.

Routine gave her hands something useful to do.

Lorenzo came in wearing a dark coat. Mia ran to him with a hair ribbon trailing behind her.

“Can you tie it?”

He looked at Elena.

“She thinks I do it badly,” Elena said.

“I can make a knot.”

“That is usually the problem.”

He sat while Mia stood between his knees. It took him three attempts and one quiet instruction from Elena to produce a crooked bow.

Mia inspected it in the mirror.

“It is very big.”

“I wanted to be thorough,” he said.

Elena smiled despite the knot in her stomach.

At the door, Lorenzo kissed his daughter, then looked at Elena.

He did not seem to know whether she would let him do the same to her in front of everyone.

She stepped forward and kissed him first.

“Call me,” she said.

His hand closed briefly at her waist.

At ten, he called from the meeting place.

At eleven, Davide confirmed the warehouse worker was with his sister.

At half past twelve, Elena’s own phone rang from an unfamiliar number.

She answered because she was waiting for news.

“Am I speaking to Elena Valez?”

The voice was calm, almost courteous.

“Who is this?”

“Adrian Vale. I believe someone has been giving you an incomplete account of my dealings with the Moretti family.”

Her grip tightened.

Across the room, Mia was drawing with Rosa.

Elena moved into the corridor.

“I have nothing to discuss with you.”

“You have a daughter whose future depends on documents she is too young to understand.”

Elena shut her eyes for a second.

There it was again: an adult voice explaining that her child’s safety depended on obedience.

She looked toward the security desk at the end of the hall and raised one hand.

The guard approached.

“I want you to stop calling the agency,” she said clearly. “I want you to stop asking where I live.”

“I was trying to reach you through proper channels.”

“You have reached me. Now listen carefully. You will not meet my daughter. You will not speak to her. If you have a claim about money, speak to the people handling it.”

The guard understood from the name she wrote on his notepad. He took out his own phone.

Vale’s tone cooled.

“Lorenzo’s father ruined my life.”

“My daughter did not.”

“Lorenzo cannot protect everyone indefinitely.”

Elena felt her pulse in her throat.

She wanted to hang up. She wanted to pack Mia’s shoes and run before someone could tell her how serious this was.

Instead, she looked through the open doorway at her daughter’s bent head.

“I am ending this conversation,” she said. “Do not contact me again.”

She handed the phone to the guard with the call details still visible.

“Please tell Lorenzo exactly what happened.”

He nodded.

She returned to Mia.

For the next hour, she colored a sun yellow while Rosa sat close enough for their shoulders to touch.

When Lorenzo called, she answered before the first ring finished.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

“He frightened me.”

“I know.”

“I stayed.”

His breath caught.

“I am coming home.”

By evening, Vale was in custody. Matteo arrived first, carrying an empty document case. The clerk had given her statement with her brother beside her. Vale’s messages and correspondence were with the investigators, along with the record of his latest attempt to reach Elena.

The assistant who had intercepted Carlo’s letter was removed from the estate’s delivery arrangements. Davide stood beside him while he surrendered his access card. Elena watched through the office window, making herself look at the face of a man whose name had once been only a frightening possibility.

He did not look powerful.

He looked like someone who had expected other people to keep being afraid.

When Lorenzo came through the front door, Mia ran to him.

He lifted her, then reached for Elena with his free hand.

She went without hesitation.

Later, after the calls and the explanations, they stood alone in the garden.

“I used to think I would feel safe when I understood everything,” she said.

He put his coat around her shoulders.

“Do you?”

“I do not feel completely safe yet.”

He nodded.

“But I want to be here,” she added. “With you. I don’t want to pretend it is only because Mia loves this house.”

He turned toward her.

“I love you,” she said. “I was trying very hard not to say it yet.”

His face changed in a way she would remember for the rest of her life.

“You always did choose inconvenient moments.”

“Would you prefer I come back tomorrow?”

He pulled her close.

“I have waited long enough.”

This time, there was nothing careful about the kiss.
